No Increase in Slip Licenses Fees

Due to many factors, including the economy in our Nation and State, the last two years have been challenging for all of us.  Because of this, the County of Orange OC Dana Point Harbor has taken an unprecedented step:

For the second consectutive year there will be no increase in slip license fees.

Dana Point Harbor remains a popular facility with boaters. OC Dana Point Harbor considers boaters an integral part of our community and their continued patronage is greatly appreciated.

Slip Vacancies

Dana Point Harbor has a reputation for high slip demand so many boaters believe they will need to sign up on a waitlist to obtain a temporary slip. However, if your boat is 28 ft. or less (length overall including extensions) the East and West Basin Marinas have these slips immediately available. Enjoy the benefits of Dana Point Harbor including the safety of our double breakwater system, quick access to open water, nearby shops and restaurants and the charming beauty of Dana Point. For more information, please contact the marina offices: Dana Point Marina Company 949.496.6137 or Dana West Marina Company 949.493.6222.

LCPA Update

In October 2009, The California Coastal Commission approved the Local Coastal Program Amendment - Land Use Plan (LCPA - LUP), which was then presented to and approved by the Dana Point City Council on February 8, 2010, followed by a second reading and ordinance adoption on February 22. This approved LUP will now be submitted to the Coastal Commission Executive Director for certification, while the County finalizes revisions to the Implementation Plan for approval by the Coastal Commission in the coming months. These approvals will allow the County to proceed with the next steps to begin construction of the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Plan. These next steps include further refinements to conceptual designs, completing the Subsequent Environmental Impact Report for the waterside areas, and preparing Coastal Development Permit applications for both the landside and waterside phases of the plan.

Harbor Improvements

Currently OC Dana Point Harbor staff is working on the design and plans for the maintenance and repair of the slope drains along Island Way within the Harbor. The County will seek construction bids this spring, with an anticipated construction start in summer 2010. Once complete, the project will alleviate the current ponding within the drainage swales along the bottom of the embankment slope of Island Way. Some related repairs to the sidewalk and curb will also take place. This project is being funded by OC Parks with design and construction management being performed by OC Dana Point Harbor.

Tips from the Harbor

The weather Dana Point encountered in mid-January was quite an event. Fortunately, the Harbor fared very well and the jetties got a much needed cleaning. On Tuesday, January 19 Harbor Patrol had the rare opportunity to post a storm warning outside their office. This is a red square or rectangular flag with a smaller black square in the middle, and signifies winds from 55 to 73 MPH. Since the posting of this flag is rare, Harbor Patrol received many calls from the public inquiring about its meaning. The flags are posted based on forecasts received from the National Weather Service at 9:30AM and 3:30PM and are meant to warn boaters of severe weather conditions.

It is important to always check the conditions before going out to sea. This can be done by calling Harbor Patrol’s recorded weather line at 949-496-6137, National Weather Radio broadcasts (162.400, 162.475, 162.550MHz) or by clicking here.

2010 Census

In 2010, the U.S. Census will define who we are as a nation. Taken every 10 years, the census determines how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the boundaries of legislative districts. Census data also helps direct federal and state funding, strengthening communities in need.

Census questionnaires will be mailed or delivered to households in February and March 2010. Every residence will receive a short questionnaire that is simple and fast to complete and return. All information the Census Bureau collects will remain confidential.

More information about the 2010 Census can be found by clicking here.

Important Boater Information
Festival of Whales
March 6, 7, 13 & 14

The 2010 Festival of Whales begins on Saturday, March 6, 2010 kicking off with the annual parade along Pacific Coast Highway. Access to the Harbor during the parade will be limited, please check with the Festival of Whales information web site for specific details.

Also on March 6th the Dana Outrigger Canoe Club is holding a race involving 300 competitors with the first race beginning at 9:00am. The short and long course as well as paddle boarders’ course will have vessels coming and going from the Harbor until after lunch, potentially congesting boater traffic in the Baby Beach and outer channel areas.

On Saturday, March 13th the first annual Mickey Munoz’s Paddle Surf Fiesta Mongoose Cup will take place at Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor. The Fun Paddle will begin at 9:00 am, with a lap around the island escorted by the Harbor Patrol. The Mongoose Cup will begin at 11:00am and will be a relay-style race with the start at the west end of Baby Beach, running a triangular course heading towards the breakwater, dog leg to the left and back to the beach. Most all competition will take place in and around the anchorage. Access to the anchorage will be controlled by the Harbor Patrol during the event and boaters are encouraged to view the relay from shore-side venues. While this is a new event, organizers expect strong participation. For all events, boaters are asked to exercise caution in proximity to the racers during the short time they are on the race course.

Complimentary shuttles will be operating in the Harbor each day of the Festival to help visitors get around the Harbor for all of the festivities.
