Janet's Journal

This summer has been a very exciting time for the County of Orange! We recently celebrated our 125th Birthday on August 1st, commemorating 125 years of rich history, accomplishments and diversity. Today, Orange County has grown to be one of the most populous and prosperous counties in the nation!

To celebrate this important milestone, my colleagues and I each selected places or people in our respective districts that reflect our County’s rich culture and history. To honor the sites that I selected in the First District, I hosted a reception to present representatives from each of these iconic “First District Attractions” with a map of all of the selected sites and projects that my office has supported throughout the years.

As residents of the First District, I would also like to share this commemorative map with you. I am honored to represent you and will continue to work hard to make the First District and the County of Orange a better place to live.

FIRST DISTRICT

Hundreds attend 5th Annual Central County Health Expo

Approximately 500 residents received free medical and dental services at the 5th Annual Central County Health Expo. The event, co-hosted by Supervisor Janet Nguyen, the Central County Foundation, Lestonnac Free Clinic and Concorde Career College, provided preventative care services to residents who do not have health insurance or are underinsured. This in turn, saves taxpayer dollars since costly emergency room visits are avoided and illnesses are identified before they become chronic.

This year, 112 residents received medical services, 78 received dental care and hundreds more were screened for various ailments.

I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who generously donated their time and I look forward to continuing to work together to address the health care needs of our community.

First District “Eco Challenge” Poster Winner Announced

I am proud to congratulate Benjamin Muñiz from Santa Ana for being selected as the First District winner of the 2014 Eco Challenge Poster Contest! Benjamin’s poster was chosen from over 50 posters submitted by contestants throughout the First District. As the First District winner of the contest, Benjamin will be a “Bat Kid” during an Angels Baseball game. Congratulations Benjamin and thank you to all of the children who participated in the contest.

Community Clean Up Day in Midway City

I recently co-hosted the annual Community Clean-Up Day in Midway City, with OC Public Works, OC Parks and OC Waste & Recycling. Each year the Community Clean-Up Day encourages neighborhood beautification and helps to build a sense of community among Midway City’s residents. This year, approximately 100 people attended the resource fair with hundreds more utilizing the 10 dumpsters placed throughout Midway City. I want to thank the agencies that participated for their efforts in organizing this great community event.

“Eco Challenge” Promotes Environmental Stewardship

Recently, OC Waste & Recycling partnered with Angels Baseball and the Discovery Science Center to host the 2014 “Eco Challenge” event at Angel Stadium. During the event, 10,000 pounds of hazardous waste were collected, while the Goodwill of Orange County netted 12,000 pounds of e-waste, household goods and gently used clothing.

The first 200 cars to arrive received tickets to either the Angels game or the Discovery Science Center. Attendees also had the opportunity to get autographs from Angels’ starting pitcher, Garrett Richards. The next Eco Challenge event will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Angels Stadium.

ORANGE COUNTY HEALTH CARE AGENCY

Tips to Protect Yourself from West Nile Virus

With an increase in West Nile Virus (WNV) activity among birds and mosquitos, the public is advised to follow the recommendations of the Orange County Health Care Agency below to minimize the risk of exposure to this virus. WNV is an infection caused by a virus transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

The Orange County Health Care Agency recommends:
  • Wearing insect repellent when outdoors (The most effective repellents contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535)
  • Draining standing water around your property
  • Making sure windows and doors have tight-fitting screens without holes and tears
  • Applying repellent, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, or staying indoors if possible at dawn and dusk since mosquitoes are most active at these times
For more information, please contact the Orange County Health Care Agency at (800) 564-8448.
