Mother's Day Message

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the monumental contributions mothers, stepmothers, and mother figures have made in our lives. I would like to say thank you to all of the amazing mothers who do so much for us, you are all incredible role models. I would also like to extend a special thanks to my wife, Cheri, I can never repay you for your love and care for our two daughters, I can’t miss expressing my gratitude, love, and reverence to you! On this beautiful day of the year! Check out the video here

In honor of Mexican Mother's Day on May 10th, and its significance my office interviewed Mexican-mothers from across the First District about what it means to be a mom. Here's what they had to say.

I also celebrated Mother’s Day with the Vietnamese American Women Association recognizing role models like Mrs. Bui Boi Thua, a respected elder who is still active at 100 years old. Thanks again to all the resilient, strong mothers in our lives for all you have done and continue to do!

“Together We Prevent Suicide” Conference this Mental Health Awareness Month

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, I am highlighting topics related to reducing stigma and taking action in our communities. Mental health is an issue that effects every community; it does not discriminate based on age, gender, socio-economic status, or any other category.

On Saturday, May 18, Hoag Mental Health Center in Newport Beach will be hosting the Together We Prevent Suicide Conference Series to raise awareness about suicide prevention and reduce stigma. Those in attendance will be armed with strategies to talk about suicide, mitigate risk, manage a psychiatric crisis, and learn about self-care activities. The conference aims to empower parents, caregivers, and others on youth suicide prevention.

Speakers include the National Alliance on Mental Illness of OC, Newport Mesa Unified School District, Orange County Department of Education Crisis Response Network, and the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Behavioral Health Services.

There is no cost to attend. Register at (949) 764-6551 or email Melanie.Nguyen@hoag.org. Registration is required for attendance.

Work for the U.S. Census

Earn extra income and work for the 2020 Census!

The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count. The census takes place every 10 years, and is designed to count the amount of people in a given population. The data that is recorded is used to determine apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, define legislative seats, school district assignment areas, as well as program planning for the elderly, build new roads, and identify necessary job training areas.

There are a variety of temporary positions available including census takers, recruiting assistants, office staff, and supervisory staff. To be eligible, one must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen. Applying is easy- just follow the link to go online and the entire process takes about 30 minutes to complete. Don’t delay, the National Census Day is April 1, 2020.
