OC Board Approves Office of Suicide Prevention

Yesterday, the Board unanimously passed my joint proposal with Supervisor Lisa Bartlett to establish the Office of Suicide Prevention.

The Office of Suicide Prevention will execute recommendations from the Community Suicide Prevention Initiative that was funded by the Board in March of 2019.

This public-private partnership with Be Well OC’s Mind OC is critical in our aggressive expansion of mental health services, including OC’s new regional Wellness Hubs.

Orange County continues to expand homeless services during this global pandemic.

Orange County has been awarded $2.4 million in CARES Act funding to support homeless services such as prevention, emergency shelters, rapid-rehousing, and other related eligible activities. The OC Health Office of Care Coordination will administer contracts to carry out these services.

OCTA Supporting OC Seniors

During OCTA’s Executive Committee meeting on Monday, I supported allowing Measure M2 resources to help deliver much-needed meals to seniors, rather than bringing seniors to meals as had been normal pre-COVID.

I look forward to bringing this item to the full OCTA Board on October 12.

CalOptima’s 25th Anniversary

Last Thursday, CalOptima celebrated 25 years of serving Orange County!

Twenty-five years ago, when CalOptima was launched on October 1, 1995, no one could have envisioned the important role it would play in the health system in Orange County. Today, over 20% of county residents rely on CalOptima for their health insurance.

COVID-19 and the economic fallout from the pandemic has placed at greater risk the health of Orange County’s vulnerable, low-income residents. CalOptima has expanded language resources to serve an increasingly diverse Orange County, growing from three to seven threshold languages.

Thank you to the staff and our provider partners for serving our 784,741 members. I am proud to serve as Chair of the CalOptima Board of Directors this year.
