Edinger Avenue Bridge

I am pleased to announce the completion of the Edinger Avenue Bridge Replacement Project in Huntington Beach. I joined with local residents and OC Public Works staff to memorialize the event with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The bridge is now officially re-open - with improved capabilities!

The project took two years to complete with construction beginning in May 2017. The original wooden bridge was built in 1968 and was meant to be a temporary structure.

The new bridge contains approximately 3,000 cubic yards of concrete and was raised five feet to meet FEMA floodplain standards. It spans 340 feet and is 48.5 feet wide. There are two twelve-foot travel lanes, two eight-foot shoulders, and a five-foot sidewalk on the south side. It also has two Class II bike lanes.

I am very proud of our OC Public Works staff and their excellent work on this important project. Job well-done.

Recognizing Retiring City Manager Fred Wilson

At the May 6th Huntington Beach City Council Meeting I had the honor and privilege to recognize retiring City Manager Fred Wilson with a well-deserved resolution. It was his last official meeting.

Fred has been at the helm of Huntington Beach for the last ten years. Under his leadership and guidance, city departments received a number of awards and the city itself was recognized as one of the best-run in America.

Additionally, during his tenure, the City enjoyed many positive additions such as the opening of the long-awaited Senior Center in Central Park, the annexation of Sunset Beach, and the development and successful debut of Pacific City - just to name a few.

Fred's quiet demeanor, statesmanship, and common sense approach to matters the City had to work with my office on, made him a pleasure to work with. Ever the consummate gentleman, he always greeted me and my staff with a pleasant smile and a firm handshake. He worked tirelessly for his City and was its number one advocate.

I wish him and his wife, Tracy, Godspeed in his well-deserved retirement from government service.

Black April Commemoration

I was honored to be invited by my colleague, Supervisor Andrew Do, to participate with the Westminster City Council at their Black April Commemoration Ceremony.

I truly love the patriotism of the Vietnamese Community. It was a very touching event and I so appreciate the way they memorialized the Fall of Saigon forty-four years ago, and honored those who lost their lives.

Tens of thousands of South Vietnamese civilians were either killed, captured, or torn apart from their families. The mass exodus of those lucky enough to escape via the U.S. Military, were so numerous that Navy personnel had to push aircraft overboard to make room for all of the refugees.

Let us not forget both the sacrifices of our U.S. Warriors as well as those South Vietnamese soldiers who paid the ultimate price so many of their countrymen could escape to America, to live in peace and freedom.

The resilience of the freedom-loving Vietnamese is astounding and I’m proud of our vibrant Orange County Vietnamese community.

Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce 58th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner

The Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce held their 58th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner to recognize over fifty local students from Newport Harbor H.S., Corona Del Mar H.S., Sage School, and selected students by the Newport Beach Police Association. Additionally, each school had a ‘Teacher of the Year’ honored as well.

It was a pleasure to have staff present individual certificates of recognition to the selected students and teachers and I am very proud to havethem in my District. I wish the students Godspeed as their high school days come to a close and a new chapter in life begins.

Great job to Steve Rosansky and his Chamber staff & members for hosting such a fine event!

Newport Irvine Rotary

It was great to have staff on hand at Newport Irvine Rotary Club’s meeting celebrating the recent medical mission to Ensenada, Mexico, led by Dr. Pardaman Singh Sawhney. Former Northrop Grumman engineer & Experimental Aircraft Association member Rohn Williams also spoke at the meeting.

Boys & Girls Club of Cypress

On May 10th Boys & Girls Club of Cypress had a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for their new Bandai Teen Center.

It was a pleasure to have staff present to recognize and congratulate President (and City Councilman) Jon Peat, CEO Anne Hertz, and the Bandai Foundation for the completion of this hugely successful project.

The Center will specifically serve youth in 7th to 12th grade by providing them with programs and mentors to help them find their path to success through developing good character, citizenship, and a healthy lifestyle.
