Michelle Steel Follows Through with Promise to Quickly Allocate CARES Act Funding to the Cities of The Second District for the Small Business Community

On the morning of June 2nd at 8:30 a.m., I followed through on my promise to deliver the much needed CARES Act Funding directly to the mayors of the ten cites in my Second District so they can quickly get the funds to those small businesses who need it most.

Michelle Steel Condemns Riots, Looting and Attacks on Law Enforcement In Orange County During George Floyd Protests

We all mourn the unjust murder of George Floyd. In honoring his life, we cannot destroy our own communities, set things on fire, threaten the safety of our families or attack our incredible law enforcement officers.

We can express our grievances to injustices in a peaceful and civil manner, as our first amendment gives Americans the right to peaceably assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. That right does not include rioting and looting. This must stop now.

Michelle Steel Presents Copy of "Places of Worship Resolution as Essential" Resolution to Pastor Joe Pedick

A great number of Orange County churches reopened under my resolution the Board of Supervisors passed unanimously last Tuesday, declaring all places of worship as “Essential Services.”

What a glorious feeling it was to reunite in love and fellowship, and hear a beautiful message about The Day of Pentecost from Pastor Joe Pedick at Calvary Chapel of the Harbour in Huntington Beach.

Who knew how timely it would be to have our clergy from all faiths, unshackled to serve their communities as we experience civil unrest all around us, while still looking out for those affected by the COVID-19 crisis. We need our churches now more than ever!

I was pleased to present Pastor Joe with a commemorative copy of the resolution written in support of the Declaration of Essentiality that he and over 1400 hundred pastors signed and sent to the Governor.

Los Alamitos Unified School District Class of 2020 Senior Graduation Parade

The ingenuity and resilience of small-town America never ceases to amaze me...

I had the honor and extreme pleasure to be the Grand Master in the Los Alamitos Unifed School District’s Class of 2020 Senior Graduation Parade in Rossmoor. The all-volunteer Rossmoor Homeowners Association worked with the District to come up with this fantastic alternative for the graduates so they could have a very memorable ceremony in spite of the state-imposed COVID-19 restrictions.

I was awestruck by the sight of 540 cars lined up in the parking lot this morning, waiting for the parade to start. And they flowed out seamlessly into Rossmoor without a hitch. I was particularly taken by the appreciation that the teenagers had for what might have been considered a geeky adult event. But no, I think they truly appreciated the recognition that the community gave them, as 2,000 people lined the streets. I only wish I was 18 again so I could have been in the parade myself.

Thanks the Orange County Sheriffs Department for their great assistance in keeping the parade orderly and moving along.

Congratulations, to all seniors of Class 2020! I wish you all Godspeed in your next chapter in life.

Orange County Board of Supervisors Unanimously Pass Michelle Steel's Resolution to Declare Houses of Worship Essential

On May 26th, I was pleased to announce that my colleagues on the Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted my 'Board Resolution Determining Houses of Worship to be Essential Services and Supporting the Resumption of In-Person Religious Assemblies.'

The reopening of Orange County churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and other local ministries begins this Thursday, May 28th - which marks the beginning of the Jewish Holiday of Shavout, and Sunday, May 31st, the Day of Pentecost, which commemorates the birth of the Christian Church.

I wrote the resolution in support of over 1500 California clergy and approximately 10,000 church & ministry leaders, who submitted a Declaration of Essentiality to Governor Newsom and the Director of the California Department of Public Health.

We have been working together on this for the past two weeks and I am very proud of both the clergy and church leaders who came out in support, as well as my colleagues.

Chairwoman Steel and Supervisor Wagner Get $26 Million in CARES Act Funding Approved, OC Board of Supervisors Rejects $75 million to Support Businesses Across Orange County

At the May 19th board meeting, Supervisor Wagner and I proposed a $101 million in CARES Act Funding for a Business Recovery Program. Under their proposal, $75 million would have been allocated to cities to support small businesses and $26 million would have been set aside to cover reimbursements for eligible city costs. The Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved of $26 million in CARES Act funding to will reimburse Orange County cities that incurred direct costs due to the COVID-19 lockdown. CARES Act funding restricts the use of funds to cover direct costs of COVID-19, and will not cover revenue losses. The $26 million would be available to cover expenses not reimbursable by the state and federal government.

Orange County Meets State’s Latest Metrics to Remove Restrictions on the Opening of More Businesses

On May 23rd, Orange County met the State’s latest metrics to remove its restrictions on the opening of more businesses. Orange County businesses now have the confidence to open safely and as soon as possible. Under these new relaxations, dine-in services can resume at restaurants and businesses can open their storefronts while enforcing social distancing.

I have been adamant in recent weeks about lifting these restrictions on our business community. Our local businesses are hurting from these closures from the state. While Orange County businesses have had the ability to safely open under the County’s business guidelines from three weeks ago, there understandably has been some confusion, as messaging from state, county and city governments have been different.

With the approval of this variance attestation from the state, this further clarifies to Orange County business owners that have been hesitant about opening their doors can do so without concern of reprisal from the state.
