The Government of Taiwan donates 20,000 Surgical Masks to Orange County Government

On Tuesday,June 16th, 2020, I received a generous donation from the Government of Taiwan of 20,000 surgical masks. These ‘Made in Taiwan’ masks will be given to hospitals, first responders and skilled nursing facilities in Orange County to assist those that are most exposed to COVID-19.

The other members of the board and I were joined by Ambassador Abraham Chu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, who on behalf of the Taiwanese Government presented the delivery of the surgical masks to the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

I am beyond grateful for this generous donation of masks specially shipped from Taiwan to assist Orange County residents as we continue our fight against COVID-19.This gesture of kindness shows just how strong our friendship is with the people of Taiwan.

Youth Sports Practices Re-Open in Orange County

The County of Orange will allow the re-opening of practices for youth sports under COVID-19 Industry Guidance: Day Camps.

The County of Orange will require all youth sports practices to follow state guidance of physical distancing and safety protocols for small and stable groups without spectators.

Youth sports are a fantastic way for children to enjoy the outdoors and get some much needed sunshine. I greatly look forward to seeing youth sports start in Orange County and encourage all sports leagues to maintain social distancing and follow safety protocols.

At this time, youth sports activities will allow for practices only. There is no set time in which the state will re-open sporting events and games with spectators.

Happy Birthday to Paul Van Doren of Vans Shoes!

On the morning of June 11th, I had the distinct pleasure to honor the patriarch of the Van Doren Family, Paul Van Doren, at the surprise celebration of his 90th Birthday. Staff was on hand to present him with a resolution from me.

Both his family and employees held a 50 car parade in his honor outside his house. They even brought him a throne to sit on as the iconic motorized tennis shoe led the procession of well-wishers past him. If that wasn’t enough, there was also was an airplane circling overhead and towing Birthday Greetings from Vans Worldwide.

For those who don’t know, the worldwide headquarters for Vans is located in my District in the city of Costa Mesa. Over the past 54 years, Vans has grown from a Southern California skate shoe company to a more than $4 billion global sport lifestyle brand, based on Paul’s ethos that Van’s isn’t a shoe and apparel company, but a people company that makes shoes and apparel.

Happy 90th Birthday, Paul!

Flag Day

Sunday, June 14th was the 243rd anniversary of the establishment of the Flag of the United States. On this day in 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the flag resolution, which established the stars and stripes as our national flag. At that time, there were only 13 stars, but now we have 50, representing our 50 great states in our union. I love this flag and I stand for it with my hand over my heart every time the national anthem is played.

Father's Day

Sunday, June 21st is fathers day. On this day we celebrate the importance of fatherhood and their essential role in raising children. Having a strong father figure is a vital part of a child's upbringing. I am so lucky to have had such a fantastic role model of a father who was an inspiration to me in my life and career. God bless all of the good fathers out there that are a role model, a bastion of support and friend in their children's lives. Happy Father's Day!

John Wayne's Birthday

May 26th was the birthday of American film legend and patriot, John Wayne who called Orange County his home. Born in Winterset Iowa, Wayne better known as, Duke, found himself in Southern California and made a name for himself as a gunslinger in western films and was a true patriotic American. Orange County's own airport was named after him. His son Ethan, runs John Wayne Enterprises and is the Director of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation, which was founded to fight the disease that took his father's life. John Wayne passed away from stomach cancer on June 11th, 1979 at the age of 72 and rests in Newport Beach, where he resided until his final days.
