BOARD ACTION

There was no regular Board meeting this week. The next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 25th at 9:30 am.

ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF-CORONER

Sheriff’s Department Reorganization- As a result of the FY 2009-10 Budget, Sheriff Hutchens outlined her plan to achieve cost savings for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. On Monday, the Sheriff announced the departmental staff reorganization plan. This plan eliminated two assistant sheriff positions and six captain positions. Nine captains will remain. To view the new organizational chart, please click here.

I would like to thank Assistant Sheriff Jack Anderson for his 23 years of service to the County of Orange. Assistant Sheriff Anderson served as acting Sheriff for five months during a critical time after the resignation of Orange County’s former Sheriff. Click here to read about Jack’s exceptional law enforcement career.

ORANGE COUNTY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY

OCTA Transportation 2020 Committee Chairman Curt Pringle and I met with Supervisor Pat Bates and Melanie Schlotterbeck, the Chair and Vice Chair of the Renewed Measure M Environmental Oversight Committee, and with representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the California Department of Fish and Game to discuss the Renewed Measure M Environmental Mitigation and Resource Protection Program.

I attended the “soft” opening of the new Tustin Branch Library with Mayor Doug Davert, Mayor Pro Tem Jerry Amante, Councilmember Jim Palmer, Councilmember Deborah Gavello, and Councilmember Jim Nielsen. The official grand opening will be in October, 2009, after the former facility has been demolished and the courtyard leading to Tustin City Hall has been built. Congratulations to the City of Tustin on this state-of-the-art facility. The County looks forward to continuing to operate the Tustin Branch Library, which is now the largest library within the Orange County Public Library system. For pictures, please click here.

I attended a luncheon featuring U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell from Kentucky and Jim Cornyn from Texas. For pictures, click here.

Third District staff attended the OC Traffic Committee meeting to hear public comment and the Committee’s discussion on the recent Live Oak Canyon Road traffic study. The Committee’s recommendations included creating a double-fine zone, increasing and updating warning signage, and placing new barriers along certain stretches of Live Oak Canyon Road. To view the presentation made to the OC Traffic Committee, please click here.

I met with Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens to discuss her Department’s budget and to learn of any progress on housing Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees in unused Orange County Jail cells. I also asked the Sheriff to work with the California Highway Patrol to provide enhanced traffic enforcement during the times noted in the Live Oak Canyon Road traffic study.

I met with Fullerton Mayor Don Bankhead and Mayor Pro Tem Pam Keller to discuss issues of interest between the City and County.

I met with Supervisor Moorlach, former State Senator Dick Ackerman and Los Angeles County Fair Association President and CEO Jim Henwood to discuss the ownership and organizational structure of the LA County Fair.

I met with OCTA's new CEO, Will Kempton, to discuss the transportation issues facing Orange County.

I spoke before members of the Irvine Chamber of Commerce. For pictures, click here.

On Saturday, Mary and I attended the Woodstock ’69 concert at Irvine Lake. We heard bands that perform the works of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, The Who, and Janice Joplin. For pictures, click here.
