September 11th Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance

Following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the country joined together in a remarkable way to convey a great spirit of empathy and patriotism. In honor of the victims, survivors and those who offered their help the United States Congress designated September 11 as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.

September 11 will always be remembered as a day of tragedy and a day of heroism. Many people, who remember experiencing the loss of September 11, feel that the best method to remember the anniversary is to reflect on the innocent lives that were lost and join others in the community in service.

“Offering your time and support in the spirit of service on or around 9/11 is a respectful way to remember the lives that were lost and brave actions of those who continue to serve today,” Supervisor Todd Spitzer said.

In 2009, when Congress designated September 11 as National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) was charged with supporting this effort across the country. CNCS provides tools and resources for organizations and individuals to become engaged in service activities, including grants to organizations to support volunteer projects across a state or throughout a multi-state region. Visit the 9/11 Day of Service website for more information on how to get involved.

There are several events in the Third Supervisorial District to commemorate September 11.

The City of Tustin will hold a memorial event in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks at 5:00 PM at the Wally Karp Memorial Statue in front of the Tustin Police Department. Parking is available in front of the police station and City Hall at 300 Centennial Way. For more information, call (714) 573-3000.

At the Richard Nixon Library, in Yorba Linda a 9/11 program will be held, including remarks by United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General David H. Berger, Commander of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. Patriotic musical performances will be given by the Villa Park High School Ensemble, the Orange High School Concert Choir and the Orange County Master Chorale. The free program will start at 11:00 AM at the Nixon Presidential Library & Museum, 18001 Yorba Linda Blvd. Click here for more information.

Irvine Valley College will hold a 9/11 Commemoration ceremony that will begin at noon in the Performing Arts Center and feature patriotic songs performed by IVC student Brittany Case and professional singer Robbie Britt as well as presentations by the Irvine Police Color Guard and OC Fire Authority Bagpiper. The featured speaker will be OC Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. Other speakers will include Irvine Mayor Steven Choi (Pledge of Allegiance); Irvine Police Department Deputy Chief of Police Mike Hamel; and OC Fire Authority Interim Chief Jeff Bowman. Register Now For the 5th Annual AlertOC Regional Test

(Portions courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department)

On September 23, 2014 over two million Orange County residents will receive a call to test AlertOC. This is the fifth annual regional test of the system and will include 25 participating cities and the County’s unincorporated areas.

Residents are encouraged to self-register their email addresses, cell phone numbers and other alternate numbers to be a part of the regional test. The key feature of AlertOC is the ability for residents to register more than one contact method at a specific address. Registrations of cell phone and alternate numbers increase the potential of reaching the greatest number of community members as rapidly as possible. This enables landlines, cell phones and e-mail addresses to be incorporated into a single notification system.

The AlertOC drill on September 23, 2014 will replicate a large scale, multi-jurisdictional emergency requiring thousands of numbers to be called simultaneously across Orange County’s entire region. The phone message will urge all residents to prepare for real-life emergencies by registering their cell numbers, text numbers and e-mail addresses at AlertOC.com for the best chance to receive vital, timely information when away from home.

AlertOC smartphone apps are also available for iPhone and Android smartphones. For more information or to register alternate phone numbers or email addresses, visit AlertOC.com.
