In memory of the tragedy of September 11, 2001, many communities and organizations are planning memorials, remembrances and other various events, which will all place an emphasis on remembrance for those who perished that day.
“I take great comfort in the love and support this Nation displayed after a tragedy. It is my hope that we can all pause on this Day of Remembrance to reflect on the tragic loss and the heroic acts that took place on September 11,” said OCFA Director Todd Spitzer, who is also Chairman of the Board of Supervisors.
The OCFA Remembrance Service provides an opportunity to pay a special tribute to the members of the following uniformed services:
- 343 fallen members of Fire Department of the City of New York
- 23 fallen members of New York City Police Department
- 37 fallen members of Port Authority Police
Many other lives were lost on September 11 and many families in our Nation suffered a great loss. As the law enforcement family comes together for this Day of Remembrance please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.. |

Supervisor Spitzer Presents at the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer Beetle Workshop hosted at UC Irvine |
|
|
|
(Portions courtesy of OC Parks)
The Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) has been found in Orange County. The beetle carries a fungus that kills trees. 75 trees have been removed in OC Parks due to this invasive species. This week, the University of California, Irvine hosted a forum to address the need for a regional solution where Supervisor Todd Spitzer addressed regional cooperation and coordination. OC Parks Division Manager Bill Kirk also spoke about measures OC Parks has taken to fight this invasive species. |
|
Tree infected with PSHB |
|
This invasive beetle has become established in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and (more recently) San Diego counties. There is no effective treatment for severely infested trees; to treat them only lengthens the time it takes for them to die and increases the risk of injury to people and property, as well as the risk of infestation of other trees.
OC Parks participates in the Emerging Tree Pest Working Group and PSHB Working Group. Through a contract, West Coast Arborists is treating infested trees, handling and disposing infested material, and maintaining a GIS tree inventory. Also, through an ongoing agreement, the University of California Cooperative Extension is identifying and mapping infestation and best management practices for handling infested material. Currently, removing the infested trees is the only solution to reduce the risk posed by falling limbs and to stem the spread of this infestation. |

OC Parks to Hold Workshop on Peters Canyon Regional Park to Present Alternative Analysis |

Supervisor Spitzer at Orange County Transportation Agency Bike Path Workshop |

OC Parks will hold a workshop from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm on October 7, 2015 at OC Fire Authority Headquarters to present and solicit public input on several alternative alignments for a segment of a proposed bikeway that would travel through or adjacent to Peters Canyon Regional Park. Supervisor Spitzer is scheduled to host the meeting.
In early 2015, OC Parks initiated the public input process to create a General Development Plan (park plan) for Peters Canyon Regional Park. One of the items being considered for the park’s trail plan is a paved multi-use trail that would traverse the park. OC Parks has received public comment to consider alternative alignments for the multi-use trail.
OC Parks has hired an engineering firm to prepare an analysis of the proposed alternative trail alignments. At the upcoming workshop, OC Parks and the consultant will present various trail alignment alternatives for consideration and public input.
OC Parks wants to hear from all Orange County residents even if they are unable to attend the workshop. The presentation and exhibit maps will be available after the workshop on the project website at www.ocparks.com/parks/peters/general_development_plan
Thoughts on the project can also be sent to OC Parks at peca@parks.com. The County looks forward to the public’s participation in the planning process to improve Peters Canyon Regional Park for the enjoyment and recreation of all Orange County residents. |

Four County of Orange Programs Receive 2015 CSAC Awards |
|
(Portions courtesy of County Executive Office)
Four County of Orange programs have been honored for innovation and cost-effectiveness by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) through its 2015 Challenge Awards program.
“Providing work training for veterans and helping foster youth are award-winning programs that show how the County of Orange is reaching out to help people and touching lives every day in multiple ways,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Spitzer. “Congratulations to all of this year’s worthy award winners.”
- Orange County Community Services’ Vets Helping Vets Work Study Program received a Challenge Award for providing training and work experience for veterans. The program assists full or part-time veteran students or eligible dependents enrolled in a college degree or vocational trade school to gain practical experience working at the Orange County Veterans Service Office while receiving GI Bill benefits. The program has been a win-win for veterans and the County—the program has augmented existing resources while helping post-9/11 veterans with employment opportunities.
- The OC Public Libraries received a Merit Award for OC Stories: Keeping History Alive. The goal was to corral historical images scattered throughout the county’s 53 historical societies as well as websites belonging to various libraries, archives and community groups. OC Stories created a centralized platform for images and video recordings, including reaching out to individuals and groups to share their personal photo albums at six public digital scanning events at libraries throughout the county.
- The Health Care Agency and Probation Department won a Merit Award for their team effort to remove barriers to behavioral health services by stationing HCA staff at Probation locations to create a continuum of services. Services include detoxification, residential treatment, psychiatric treatment and medication, and behavioral health counseling. HCA staff works at three Probation sites, which allows offenders engaging in treatment to be better prepared for success upon their re-entry into the community.
- The Social Services Agency received a Merit Award for “Orange County Teen Collaborative Inspires Hope for Foster Youth.” The program brings together community partners with SSA to provide strength-based, innovative and collaborative programs and services that build a sense of purpose, community and inspiration among abused and neglected foster youth. Youth are mentored and exposed to positive experiences and opportunities such as visits to colleges, museums, sporting and cultural events.
