OC Drowning Prevention Task Force Summer Kickoff

Supervisor Todd Spitzer leads the OC Drowning Prevention Task Force Summer Kickoff at the Newport Beach Pier on Thursday, June 1st.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer led members of the OC Drowning Prevention Task Force at the Summer Kickoff press event at McFadden Square in Newport Beach on Thursday, June 1st. Supervisor Spitzer serves as Public Safety Outreach chair for the task force this year.

L-R: Newport Beach Council Member Diane Dixon, OCFA Chief Jeff Bowman, Julie Lopiccolo, Chris Carlson, Olympian Kaleigh Gilchrist and Supervisor Todd Spitzer at the OCDP Summer Kickoff Press Conference.
Drowning is the number one cause of death among children one to four years old, accounting for half the drowning fatalities in Orange County each year. Of the other half, most victims are adults 50-years and older, often occurring when a victim swims alone.

Our multi-lingual awareness campaign this year includes OC Transit bus wraps, on-line digital messages, public service announcements at Angels games, the promotion of water-watcher tags to designate a responsible water safety monitor at all times, and public outreach staffing at summer events throughout the county.

Our fundamental message is: drowning is preventable. Our public safety outreach slogans are simple reminders:
  • It only takes seconds to drown.
  • Always watch your child around water.
  • Think twice – bring a buddy & don’t swim alone.

MADD Law Enforcement and Prosecutor Recognition Awards

Supervisor Spitzer with OC Sheriff’s deputies at the 2017 MADD Law Enforcement and Prosecutor Recognition Awards Luncheon on June 2nd.

Supervisor Spitzer thanked members of the law enforcement community and MADD for their work.
Supervisor Todd Spitzer is proud to work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to promote awareness and public safety. A member of the MADD Advisory Board and 2016 Pursuit of Justice Award winner, Supervisor Spitzer was invited to speak at the 2017 Law Enforcement and Prosecutor Recognition Luncheon on Saturday, June 2nd. Several exceptional individuals were recognized for their commitment and service in fighting drunk driving.

City of Orange Police Officer Sharif Muzayan was honored with the MADD Community Hero Award for leading his department in DUI arrests last year despite missing several months with a severe injury. Officer Muzayan nearly lost his life, and his left leg, when a suspected DUI driver plowed in to him while on he was on duty.

Supervisor Spitzer posed with MADD Southern California Executive Director Patricia Rillera and OC Deputy District Attorney Suzie Price.
MADD’s mission is to prevent drunk and drugged driving, support victims, and discourage underage drinking. Impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of death and injuries in America, but thanks to the efforts of MADD, the law enforcement community, and families of victims, awareness of this issue has increased tremendously. At the event, Supervisor Spitzer thanked these groups for their instrumental work. As a former prosecutor Supervisor Spitzer knows the importance of our law enforcement’s work in this issue. As a father, he knows necessity of keeping our families safe.

Supervisor Spitzer helps OCFA Promote Wildlands Fire Preparedness

Supervisor Todd Spitzer with Canyons Community organizer Joanne Hubble and members of the OCFA Helicopter Crew at the Wildlands Fire Prevention Press Conference on Wednesday, May 31.
Peak wildfire season is fast approaching and Supervisor Spitzer stood with OC Fire Authority Officers and fire fighters to promote wildfire preparedness for the coming dry season. There are important steps you can take to help keep you and your home safe from wildfires. The Orange County Fire Authority recommends residents keep a watchful eye on backyard barbeques and remove non-native plants, which may be less fire resistant, to restore the natural habitat. The OCFA also asks that the public report any suspicious persons, behavior, and vehicles that are not familiar to the area to reduce the risk of arson. Finally, be sure to implement and practice an evacuation plan for your family and pets in the event of a fire emergency.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer appears this month on a segment of Local Edition with anchor Brad Pomerance

Supervisor Spitzer discussed the deepening scandal within the OC District Attorney’s office that now includes three former OCDA investigators alleging felonious misconduct and corruption by the D.A., prosecution supervisors and other staff members. That’s in addition to the continuing jailhouse snitch scandal that is growing wider as an Orange County Superior Court judge seeks discovery.
