Supervisor Spitzer Celebrates Library of the Canyons Grand Opening

Supervisor Todd Spitzer (front, right) performs the official ribbon cutting for the new Library of the Canyons with members of OC Parks and OC Public Libraries along with mascot Hank the Red Tailed Hawk on Thursday, July 20th.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer was honored to speak at the Grand Opening of the new Library of the Canyons on July 20th, where the much-anticipated library finally opened its doors to the public. Supervisor Spitzer offered congratulations to OC Parks and OC Public Libraries for the library’s successful launch.

The Library of the Canyons, the latest chapter in the long history of library service in the Canyons, was completed through a joint effort between OC Parks and OC Public Libraries. It replaces the much smaller Silverado Canyon Library, and in addition to offering a larger space with a beautiful new design, the library has additional amenities that include public computers, energy efficient lighting, heating, and air conditioning. The library also features a new Storytime Reading Area for children, which will give the children of this community the opportunity to learn, to be enlightened, to study, and to explore their curiosities.

One of the most exciting parts about the newly opened library is the potential for increased cooperation between OC Public Libraries and OC Parks. Both departments will use office space in the building, and they are hoping to offer programming to the community using the resources of both the library and the natural open-space surroundings of the Canyons. The cooperation between these two departments will bridge hands-on instruction with traditional research-based teaching, providing exciting opportunities that are unavailable anywhere else.

Supervisor Spitzer joined members of OC Parks, OC Public Libraries, and others including Hank the Red Tailed Hawk from the OC Bird of Prey Center in cutting the Grand Opening Ribbon. Supervisor Spitzer also offered a special thanks to Helen Fried, Director of OC Public Libraries, Stacy Blackwood, Director of OC Parks, Kevin Topp, President of the Silverado Modjeska Recreation and Park District, and Linda May, President of the InterCanyon League, for speaking at the event and for bringing their unique expertise to this project.

HomeAid Orange County Family CareCenter Dedication

Supervisor Todd Spitzer leads a discussion on homelessness and HomeAid's efforts to provide help.

It is well known that homelessness is a difficult issue that affects many in Orange County. As the County takes steps to combat homelessness and provide stable housing and medical support for homeless individuals, Supervisor Todd Spitzer proudly joined HomeAid Orange County for the dedication ceremony of the new Family CareCenter in Orange.

Supervisor Spitzer spoke at the lunch honoring the sponsors and community members who helped make the Family CareCenter possible. He acknowledged the importance of the new facility in helping families receive care to help get them back on their feet.

HomeAid Orange County is a nonprofit organization committed to ending homelessness by building and renovating shelters for those in Orange County who find themselves homeless due to sudden job loss, catastrophic illness, spousal desertion, and domestic violence. HomeAid works with other nonprofit organizations to provide far-reaching and positive results in effectively providing shelter for those in need.

The new Family CareCenter was the first project spearheaded by HomeAid. The Family CareCenter increases the year-round availability of low threshold emergency shelters for families focusing on rapidly rehousing families within 30 to 45 days through case management. The center is family-focused, featuring a large kitchen and dining area, a laundromat, communal family sleeping spaces, and a children’s play area.

This new facility will deliver crucial help to many families in need by providing a safe place to stay together with amenities and services to secure permanent housing. This is another step in the right direction to help Orange County’s homeless population find permanent solutions.

Board of Supervisors Honor OC Probation Services

(L-R) Staff members Jennifer Palmquist, Francisco Frias, and Catherine Flores listen as Supervisor Todd Spitzer commends Orange County Probation Services.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors recognized the OC Probation Department with a proclamation declaring July 16-22, 2017 as “Probation Services Week”. At the July 25th Board meeting, Supervisor Todd Spitzer commended members of Probation Services for their dedication and hard work in the face of increasing burdens in the wake of recent State laws favoring offenders over crime victims.

Supervisor Spitzer drew on his experience as a State Assemblyman from 2002 through 2008 when he successfully fought against similar legislation in the interest of public safety. After he left the legislature, soft-on-crime laws AB 109 and Proposition 47 were signed in to law, significantly shifting the burden of criminal supervision from the State parole board to local probation agencies.

Zookeeper Appreciation Day at the OC Zoo

Field Deputy Al Tello poses with the OC Zoo sign at Zookeeper Appreciation Day on Saturday, July 22nd.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s Field Deputy Al Tello spoke at the Orange County Zoo in commemoration of Zookeeper Appreciation Day. He presented certificates to each of the zookeepers and thanked them for their work in keeping both the animals and visitors to the zoo happy.

Zoos are great resources for both research on animals and for engaging the community in caring about and supporting wildlife. Zoos also work diligently to support global conservation efforts, raise money to support animal research and care, and provide temporary and permanent homes for animals of all shapes and sizes. All that can’t be possible without the work of the fantastic zookeepers who work with these animals on a daily basis.

National Hazardous Waste Drive-Thru Day

Supervisor Spitzer's Field Deputy Al Tello presented a certificate to OC Waste and Recycling for their drive-thru event.

Recycling bottles and cans is an easy way to keep the environment clean and recoup a little money for the effort. But where do batteries go? What about leftover cleaning products, fluorescent light bulbs, or old DVD, VCR, or CD players? Many people may wonder how to safely dispose of these and other items. Orange County Waste and Recycling’s Household Hazardous Waste collection centers provide a convenient and safe way to remove these and other household hazardous waste.

On July 22nd, OC Waste and Recycling held an Alternative Drive-Thru Day to encourage residents to bring their used, broken, or unwanted hazardous waste and “drive through” the collection center for safe disposal. Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s Field Deputy Al Tello visited the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center in Irvine to present a certificate to thank the workers for their efforts to keep the community safe from hazardous items and waste.

Mr. Tello helped hand out battery buckets from the Third District booth so that families could use them to collect used batteries and bring them back for proper disposal. Nearly 1,000 OC residents used the drive-thru and received the battery buckets and coupons for a free child’s admission to the Discovery Science Cube.

A Message from Supervisor Todd Spitzer and OC Parks
Dear Friends:

We all share great memories in the parks with our friends, family, and communities. That is why I am helping the OC Parks Department to develop the next steps in their strategic plan to improve our communities. These resources are important to our Third District, so we are asking that you fill out the following brief 18-question survey to provide the County of Orange your thoughts about our parks. This is your opportunity to let us know what is working and what you would like to see more of in your OC parks.

Your feedback is valuable, and your individual responses will be kept confidential. We encourage you to share the link with others – friends, family members, neighbors, park users, constituents… anyone who cares about our parks and their future.

Here is the link to the questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/OCParksCommunitySurvey

We want to hear from you!

As always, it is an honor to serve you as your Third District Supervisor.

Best regards,
Supervisor Todd Spitzer

Supervisor Spitzer Reminds You to Swim Safely
As Public Safety and Outreach Chair with the OC Drowning Prevention Taskforce, Supervisor Todd Spitzer is dedicated to raising awareness of water safety.

The hot weather means families and guests are swimming at the beach and jumping into pools across Orange County, but before putting on that swimsuit, it is important to take safety precautions. Always watch your children around water, designate a water-watcher at group events and think twice – bring a buddy and never swim alone.
