Summer Freedom Festival 2017

Supervisor Todd Spitzer (far left) speaks at the Summer Freedom Festival. Chairwoman Michelle Steel (center) and Supervisor Andrew Do (right) listen from the event stage.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined Supervisor Andrew Do in a celebration of freedom at the first annual Summer Freedom Festival at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley on Saturday, August 12.

Supervisor Spitzer congratulates young performers from the Bi Trí Dũng Lion Dance Academy for their outstanding show.
The Freedom Festival is designed as a celebration of the wide array of cultural pride observed in the melting pot of America. The free three-day intercultural festival featured performances from youth groups, booths from local businesses, and bilingual officiating ceremonies.

Supervisor Spitzer and Officer Nguyen of the Westminster Police Department laugh before the Summer Freedom Festival's opening ceremony.
Supervisor Spitzer spoke at the event, where dignitaries from across Orange County came to show their support, and highlighted the festival’s intercultural significance by teaching the audience how to say “hello” in several languages. Supervisor Spitzer attended the event as part of the Drowning Prevention Task Force to help raise awareness across the county for drowning prevention. Throughout the weekend, the Drowning Prevention Task Force booth handed out prizes to those who could correctly answer drowning prevention and Orange County trivia questions. Carnival games and delicious worldly food trucks were also on hand to delight visitors.

Supervisor Spitzer was invited by Supervisor Andrew Do, who organized the Freedom Festival in his First District. The event successfully brought many people together and encouraged acceptance and support for diversity in Orange County. Supervisor Spitzer would like to again thank Supervisor Do for the kind invitation and looks forward to many more successful events in the future.

Tele-Town Hall: The Easy Way to Stay Informed

The Hall of Administration at the Orange County Civic Center in Santa Ana.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer proudly held the Third District’s first Tele-Town Hall on August 9th.  The Tele-Town Hall is a unique opportunity for residents of the Third District to listen in over the phone and participate in discussion on topics affecting Orange County.  The Town Hall is part of Supervisor Spitzer’s efforts to promote transparency in government and education of community issues.

The first Town Hall focused on homelessness, a difficult problem that requires practical and humane solutions.  Supervisor Spitzer led the phone call along with Susan Price, Orange County Director of Care Coordination, for an hour-long discussion on the causes of homelessness, with facts and statistics, and how the County is working on solutions.

Residents of Irvine, Orange, Tustin, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, and the Canyons listened to the conversation.  Supervisor Spitzer took questions from callers, helping to address their individual concerns and inform them of things they can do to help.  Throughout the call, Susan Price shared her expertise with an in-depth and detailed conversation including Supervisor Spitzer and participating callers.

Homelessness is just the first of many important issues Supervisor Spitzer hopes to hold Tele-Town Halls to discuss.  Watch for future Tele-Town Hall announcements on newsletters, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Were you on the call?  What did you think?  Did you enjoy the discussion?  What ways can we improve?  Feel free to offer suggestions/feedback via Supervisor Spitzer’s social media accounts or by emailing Todd.Spitzer@ocgov.com or Montana.Sudul@ocgov.com, subject line “Tele-Town Hall".

Preschool Program Funds Approved for 2017-2018 Fiscal Year

Supervisor Todd Spitzer and his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors approved receiving the funds from a very special grant for the Orange County Social Services Agency during the August 8 Board Meeting (any department in the County of Orange must receive approval from the Board of Supervisors to receive money from an outside entity totaling $50,000 or more).

The $209,201 grant from the California Department of Education (CDE), Early Education and Support Division, is to provide continued funding in Orange County for the California State Preschool Program. The approval of the grant provides the funds to increase the availability of full-day/full-year early education development programs to eligible low-income and at-risk pre-school children. The California State Preschool Program is the largest state-funded preschool program in the nation, serving eligible three- and four-year-old children with a core class curriculum that is developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate for the children.

The program is designed to promote early learning and kindergarten readiness to children who otherwise may not have access to affordable pre-school programs. Supervisor Spitzer was proud to cast his ‘yes’ vote to allow the Social Services Agency to continue funding this important opportunity for early-learner readiness.

Drowning Prevention Taskforce

Watch the video here for more information on this important cause.

Summer is winding down as children start heading back to school, but it is as important as ever to be diligent about water safety.

As Public Safety and Outreach Chair with the OC Drowning Prevention Taskforce, Supervisor Todd Spitzer is dedicated to raising awareness of water safety. Watch the video above (or at https://youtu.be/tBhcYCVOdto?t=450) for more information on Supervisor Spitzer’s role.

These rubber ducky's and Water Watcher badge help encourage adults and children alike to bring a buddy and never swim alone.
Downing is the leading cause of accidental deaths by children under the age of five in Orange County, and adults age 50 and older account for 50% of drownings every year.

Drowning is 100% preventable. Barriers, such as fences around pools, help reduce a child’s ability to get near the water. Swim lessons are also encouraged to help young children and older-adults become stronger swimmers.

Pick up a Water Watcher badge from any Orange County Fire Authority Station for free. These badges provide a clear sign about who will watch the water while others are in it.

Always watch your children around water, designate a water-watcher at group events and think twice – bring a buddy and never swim alone. These important precautions will help keep everyone safer through the summer.
