Mary Aileen Matheis Reappointed to the Assessment Appeals Board

Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s Third District appointee Mary Aileen Matheis was unanimously approved to serve again on the Assessment Appeals Board No. 4.

The Assessment Appeals Boards are important tools for taxpayers in Orange County to challenge the property assessments made by the Orange County Assessor. Board members have experience in appraising, real estate brokerage, CPA, or as attorneys and determine the value of the appraised property based upon evidence presented by the property holder and the Assessor.

Ms. Matheis is an experienced attorney and has been a wonderful addition to the Assessment Appeals Board. Supervisor Spitzer offers his congratulations to her and thanks her for her continued contribution to the board.

Solar Eclipse 2017

Flags at the Civic Center and the partial eclipse behind them.
Recently, Orange County was treated to a rare event; a solar eclipse. For a few minutes, the moon covered approximately 60% of the sun, leading to plenty of excitement from people who had stepped outside from offices, homes, cars, and schools to experience the stunning spectacle.

While Orange County did not get to experience totality (where the moon completely covers the sun), this eclipse was the first totality solar eclipse to cross the continental United States since 1979.

Outside the Hall of Administration, County of Orange employees convened in the plaza to share in the solar experience. Many brought special glasses so they could safely look at the eclipse while others used tinfoil and cardboard to make “pinhole cameras” to view the eclipse.

County employees gather to experience the eclipse outside the Civic Center in Santa Ana.

Tele-Town Hall: The Easy Way to Stay Informed

The Hall of Administration at the Orange County Civic Center in Santa Ana.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer proudly held the Third District’s first Tele-Town Hall.  The Tele-Town Hall is a unique opportunity for residents of the Third District to listen in over the phone and participate in discussion on topics affecting Orange County.  The Town Hall is part of Supervisor Spitzer’s efforts to promote transparency in government and education of community issues.

The first Town Hall focused on homelessness, a difficult problem that requires practical and humane solutions.  Supervisor Spitzer led the phone call along with Susan Price, Orange County Director of Care Coordination, for an hour-long discussion on the causes of homelessness, with facts and statistics, and how the County is working on solutions.

Residents of Irvine, Orange, Tustin, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, and the Canyons listened to the conversation.  Supervisor Spitzer took questions from callers, helping to address their individual concerns and inform them of things they can do to help.  Throughout the call, Susan Price shared her expertise with an in-depth and detailed conversation including Supervisor Spitzer and participating callers.

Homelessness is just the first of many important issues Supervisor Spitzer hopes to hold Tele-Town Halls to discuss.  Watch for future Tele-Town Hall announcements on newsletters, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Were you on the call?  What did you think?  Did you enjoy the discussion?  What ways can we improve?  Feel free to offer suggestions/feedback via Supervisor Spitzer’s social media accounts or by emailing Todd.Spitzer@ocgov.com or Montana.Sudul@ocgov.com, subject line “Tele-Town Hall”.

Drowning Prevention Taskforce

Summer is winding down as children start heading back to school, but it is as important as ever to be diligent about water safety.

As Public Safety and Outreach Chair with the OC Drowning Prevention Taskforce, Supervisor Todd Spitzer is dedicated to raising awareness of water safety. Watch the video above (or at https://youtu.be/tBhcYCVOdto?t=450) for more information on Supervisor Spitzer’s role.

These rubber ducky's and Water Watcher badge help encourage adults and children alike to bring a buddy and never swim alone.
Downing is the leading cause of accidental deaths by children under the age of five in Orange County, and adults age 50 and older account for 50% of drownings every year.

Drowning is 100% preventable. Barriers, such as fences around pools, help reduce a child’s ability to get near the water. Swim lessons are also encouraged to help young children and older-adults become stronger swimmers.

Pick up a Water Watcher badge from any Orange County Fire Authority Station for free. These badges provide a clear sign about who will watch the water while others are in it.

Always watch your children around water, designate a water-watcher at group events and think twice – bring a buddy and never swim alone. These important precautions will help keep everyone safer through the summer.
