(L to R): Former Orange City Councilman Mike Spurgeon, CFO Board Member Gary Remland, and Supervisor Spitzer stand in front of the 1,776 flags flown at Handy Park for the Field of Valor. |
Supervisor Todd Spitzer was honored and privileged to join the Community Foundation of Orange for the Field of Valor Kick-Off at Handy Park on November 5. The weeklong event raises 1,776 flags in honor of veterans to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military families, communities, and especially by the men and women who serve our country.
“Our county is above and beyond proud of our veterans and military,” Supervisor Spitzer said during his speech to the crowd at Handy Park, “I’m proud to support our veteran community and I want to thank the Community Foundation of Orange for honoring our veterans.”
“Our nation has a duty to honor our veterans for their sacrifice and to educate the next generation of young people that will most certainly be called on to protect liberty and democracy throughout the world,” Supervisor Spitzer stated.
The County of Orange offers resources specifically designed to suit veteran needs. The Veterans Service Office works collaboratively with national chartered veterans’ organizations to ensure that veterans and their dependents receive the entitlements they have earned for their military service. The County also offers behavioral health services for veterans through OC Health Care Agency. Visit www.ocgov.com to learn about these and our many other resources available to veterans in need. |

OC Veterans Cemetery Dedication Ceremony |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer spoke about his support of bringing the Veterans Cemetery to Irvine. |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer (C) smiles with Emile Haddad (L), CEO of FivePoint Communities, and Bill Cook (R), Chairman of the Orange County Veteran's Memorial Park Foundation, both of whom were instrumental in the Veterans Cemetery project. |
October 27 was a historic day for veterans in Orange County as the City of Irvine hosted the Flag Raising Ceremony and Dedication for the site of the future Southern California Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Supervisor Spitzer was one of the influential leaders whose work over the last 20 years helped bring the cemetery to the Great Park.
Commendable effort by veterans groups after years of advocacy have succeeded in securing a location at the Great Park.
While the project had been stalled in the decades since the El Toro Marine Base closed in Irvine, the creation of this cemetery means veterans and their family members will be buried at the actual base in which they served our country.
Supervisor Spitzer spoke at the event to thank the many people involved. The Flag Raising Ceremony at the future site of the Southern California Veterans Memorial Park “show Orange County is finally stepping up to provide a permanent resting place for our brave heroes,” he said, addressing a crowd of more than one-hundred Veterans, elected officials, and advocates.
The 125+ acres of land on the former El Toro Marine Base will soon be a place of pride and respect for the 120,000 veterans who call Orange County home, and the many more who have been lost.

Human Trafficking Task Force Receives Grant for “Be the One” Campaign |

|
As Co-Chair of the OC Commercially Sexually Exploited Children (CSEC) Steering Committee as part of OC Social Services Agency, Supervisor Todd Spitzer has been a leading voice on human-trafficking prevention and paved the way for the “Be the One” campaign. On September 1, 2017, the US Department of Homeland Security selected the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) to receive a highly competitive grant to enhance and expand the “Be the One” campaign.
The “Be the One” campaign is a human-trafficking prevention initiative that leads Orange County’s public awareness on the warning signs of sex trafficking and encourage victims to come forward. The CSEC Steering Committee partnered with OCTA to tailor the “Be the One” campaign to focus specifically on the sex trafficking of children. Together, OCTA and CSEC promoted the campaign’s messages on OC buses across the County. While one of the main goals of the CSEC Steering Committee is to increase public awareness, they are also working collaboratively to enhance services and identify appropriate placement resources for this vulnerable population.
Supervisor Spitzer, who is also an OCTA director, congratulates OCTA for the award and is proud of their continued support of the “Be the One” Campaign. |
