Supervisor Todd Spitzer Welcomes Hands-Only CPR Kiosks at John Wayne Airport |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer proudly initiated the collaborative process to bring these three kiosks to John Wayne Airport. |
|
The new Hands-Only CPR kiosks teach users how to correctly perform CPR. Three of these life-saving kiosks have been installed in John Wayne Airport. |
Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital, and about 20 percent occur in public places. CPR, life-saving technique used on someone under cardiac arrest, can double or triple victims’ chances of surviving cardiac arrest.
Supervisor Spitzer initiated the collaborative process to bring three Hands-Only CPR training kiosks to John Wayne Airport, and was proud to join the kiosks’ unveiling on December 4. “Public safety is our highest priority at John Wayne Airport and emergency response could be needed at anytime, anywhere,” Supervisor Spitzer said. “We have 8.5 million people who come through John Wayne Airport every year; that’s 8.5 million people who can practice their CPR technique at the Hands-Only CPR kiosk and be prepared to help someone suffering from cardiac arrest in an emergency.”
Hands-Only CPR kiosks are efficient tools to teach anyone how to do CPR without mouth to mouth in as little as five minutes. The American Heart Association installed the first kiosks in the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Airport in 2013. Since then, their kiosks have been used over 61,000 times by travelers from across the country.
The three kiosks at John Wayne Airport are located in Terminal A, Gate 8, Terminal B, Gate 12, and Terminal C, Gate 16. They are free and open for anyone to use.
Supervisor Spitzer thanked Chairwoman Michelle Steel and her office for helping drive the project from beginning to its completion. Their support and participation in this project and the Orange County Fire Authority for bringing the Hands-Only project to his attention. Special thanks as well to McCarthy Builders, Anthem Blue Cross, and the Argyros Family Foundation for their generous support and contributions, without which this project would not have happened. Supervisor Spitzer also commended the American Heart Association for utilizing John Wayne Airport as the location to launch these kiosks, the first three on the West Coast. |

Santiago Oaks Regional Park Scheduled to Reopen: Saturday, December 9 |
|
Santiago Oaks Regional Park has been closed since the Canyon Fires in October. |
|
After the Canyon Fire 2 severely damaged nearly all of Santiago Oaks Regional Park in October, portions of the park will reopen on Saturday morning at 7 a.m.
Thanks to the hard work of OC Parks, with help from Orange County Fire Authority and Orange City Fire, many hazards including burned trees, branches and debris have been removed from the park.
Work continues in some areas, which will remain closed for now for your safety. Other areas that contain sensitive habitat that will need extra recovery time will also remain closed. Premature access could permanently damage these areas and hinder the park’s ability to bounce back to the beautiful open space we all enjoy.
We are asking for the public to enjoy the open trails and to respect the closures that remain. Park rangers will be citing anyone who ventures onto closed trails or in closed areas. This also applies to the partial closures that remain at Irvine Regional Park and Peters Canyon Regional Park.
Here is a list of Santiago Oaks trails that will be open and closed starting Saturday morning:
- The Windes parking lot will be open, and trails will be accessible via Towhee Trail.
- The following trails will be OPEN: Anaheim Hills, Barham Ridge, Bumble Bee (partial closure), Cactus Canyon, Deer, Grasshopper, Hawk, Mountain Goat, Mountain Goat Enhancement, Oak (partial closure), Peralta Hills, Sage Ridge, Santiago Creek (partial closure), Towhee, Weir Canyon, Wilderness (partial closure), Windes (partial closure).
- The following trails will be CLOSED: Arizona Crossing, Bobcat Meadow, Bumble Bee (partial closure), Chutes, Chutes Ridgeline, Coachwhip, Historic Dam, Lady Bug, Oak (partial closure), Pacifica, Pony, Rinker Grove, Santiago Creek (partial closure), Sour Grass, Wilderness (partial closure), Willows, Windes (partial closure), Windes Nature.

Supervisor Spitzer Gives Back to Community in the Spirit of Thanksgiving |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer (R) smiles with participants at the Turkey Trot in Dana Point. Proceeds from the event benefit local nonprofits and the Dana Point community. |
|
Every Thanksgiving is an opportunity to express gratitude and to give back to those less fortunate. This year, Supervisor Todd Spitzer supported a triad of events Thanksgiving Day to encourage community spirit, cooperation, and compassion.
Supervisor Spitzer (CR) presented a proclamation to Frank Garcia (CL), founder of We Give Thanks, in celebration of the event's success. |
Supervisor Spitzer started the day at the 40th Annual Dana Point Turkey Trot, where over 300 volunteers helped facilitate the run, from which all net proceeds benefit local nonprofits to assist veterans and the Dana Point community.
After the race, Supervisor Spitzer joined the crowd of 10,000 people who gathered to share a Thanksgiving meal at the annual We Give Thanks. We Give Thanks has been providing free Thanksgiving meals to families in need for 31 years. Held in the parking lot of the Honda Center, We Give Thanks and their volunteers have given a quarter of a million meals to those in need and received countless smiles in return.
Volunteers organize donations on the Santa Ana River Trail. |
Supervisor Spitzer finished off the Thanksgiving Holiday by visiting the Santa Ana Riverbed, where he joined volunteers donating food and necessities to the nearby homeless encampment. Supervisor Spitzer has vowed the County will treat the homeless with compassion and respect while offering a range of whole-care services to address their needs. The donation event on Thanksgiving is just one more example of the need for continuing action to bridge the gap of homelessness with connections to housing services.
Supervisor Spitzer reemphasized that those seeking help can find assistance at Bridges at Kraemer Place. Supervisor Spitzer led the effort in bringing the whole-care homeless shelter to fruition in May of 2017.

OCSD Looking to Reunite Bicycles with Rightful Owners |
|
1,000 bikes were discovered by OC Public Works in Fountain Valley. Photo courtesy of OC Sheriff's Department. |
|
As members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department continue to process the bicycle parts and bicycles pulled from a flood control channel tunnel along the Santa Ana Riverbed, investigators are looking to reunite salvaged bicycles with their rightful owners.
Citizens who have lost a bike or believe theirs to be stolen may send a description of their bicycle, along with the serial number and a police report number to lostbike@ocsd.org.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will contact residents whose bicycles have been located and schedule reunification.
At this time, it would appear the majority of the bicycles recovered are beyond repair due to being heavily damaged or stripped for parts.
A total number of bicycles available for unification is unknown, but crews will continue to process the evidence and determine which bicycles are salvageable.
