23rd Annual CHOC Harley-Davidson Ride and Toy Drive

Supervisor Spitzer (L) speaks about the care his son Justin (R) experienced at CHOC when the then-high school junior was sick.

Over 300 bikers participated in this year’s CHOC Toy Drive and Ride, the biggest turnout yet!
Supervisor Todd Spitzer co-chaired the 23rd annual CHOC Children’s Harley Ride and Toy Drive on December 17 with Orange Mayor Pro-Tem Mark Murphy. Riders traveled from Orange County Harley-Davidson to Children’s Hospital Orange County with toys to be donated to CHOC patients.

A ceremony was held at CHOC to thank the riders for their donations and support of this event. Supervisor Spitzer spoke about the incredible care his family had experienced first-hand when his son was sick. “I brought my son Justin to CHOC Children's Hospital three years ago when he became very sick, and CHOC saved his life,” Supervisor Spitzer said. “There are a lot of people like myself and my family who are indebted to this hospital.”

(L to R): Councilmember Mark Murphy, KTLA meteorologist and sportscaster Henry DiCarlo, Mayor Tita Smith, Councilmember Fred Whitaker, Jenna Jensen of CHOC, and Supervisor Todd Spitzer.
After expressing his gratitude to CHOC, Supervisor Spitzer agreed to match a generous donation of $1,000 by fellow rider Mr. Walter Buttkus.

Despite a precariously windy ride, riders arrived safely and had the opportunity to deliver their toys to children in the hospital during the holidays. The donation of toys will ensure a year-round supply for all the children that stay at CHOC.

Thanks to event sponsors OC Harley-Davidson, Wahoo's Fish Taco, The Toll Roads, as well as supporters Mayor Tita Smith, Councilmembers Mark Murphy and Fred Whitaker, City of Orange Police Department, Orange City Firefighters, KTLA meteorologist and sportscaster Henry DiCarlo, Wing Lam, Craig Shelby, and the band Superlark.

Supervisor Spitzer Speaks Live on ABC 7 to Promote Spark of Love Toy Drive

Supervisor Spitzer (C) is interviewed live by ABC 7 correspondent Leslie Lopez while his staff hold toys to be donated to the Stuff a Bus event.

An OCTA bus waits to be filled with toy donations during the Spark of Love toy drive.
No child should go without gifts during the holidays and OC has responded! Supervisor Spitzer praised the fantastic turnout by the community at the Spark of Love Stuff a Bus Holiday Toy Drive at Honda Center on December 15. Speaking live to ABC 7, Supervisor Spitzer called on his constituents to donate. “Every little bit counts!” he said in an interview with ABC 7 correspondent Leslie Lopez, “Let’s make the holidays special for families in need!”

The final count was 21 OCTA busses stuffed with toys to be donated to families all across Orange County. Special thanks to event sponsor ABC7 and Leslie Lopez for spotlighting the all-day event. We appreciate the Orange County Fire Authority, Anaheim Fire, and all the military soldiers that served & volunteered with many others who supported this event.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park Now Open!

Santiago Oaks Regional Park has been closed since the Canyon Fires in October.

After the Canyon Fire 2 severely damaged nearly all of Santiago Oaks Regional Park in October, portions of the park reopened on Saturday morning at 7 a.m.
Thanks to the hard work of OC Parks, with help from Orange County Fire Authority and Orange City Fire, many hazards including burned trees, branches and debris have been removed from the park.

Work continues in some areas, which will remain closed for now for your safety. Other areas that contain sensitive habitat that will need extra recovery time will also remain closed. Premature access could permanently damage these areas and hinder the park’s ability to bounce back to the beautiful open space we all enjoy.

We are asking for the public to enjoy the open trails and to respect the closures that remain. Park rangers will be citing anyone who ventures onto closed trails or in closed areas. This also applies to the partial closures that remain at Irvine Regional Park and Peters Canyon Regional Park.

Here is a list of Santiago Oaks trails that are open and closed as of December 9:
  • The Windes parking lot is open, and trails are accessible via Towhee Trail.
  • The following trails are OPEN: Anaheim Hills, Barham Ridge, Bumble Bee (partial closure), Cactus Canyon, Deer, Grasshopper, Hawk, Mountain Goat, Mountain Goat Enhancement, Oak (partial closure), Peralta Hills, Sage Ridge, Santiago Creek (partial closure), Towhee, Weir Canyon, Wilderness (partial closure), Windes (partial closure).
  • The following trails are CLOSED: Arizona Crossing, Bobcat Meadow, Bumble Bee (partial closure), Chutes, Chutes Ridgeline, Coachwhip, Historic Dam, Lady Bug, Oak (partial closure), Pacifica, Pony, Rinker Grove, Santiago Creek (partial closure), Sour Grass, Wilderness (partial closure), Willows, Windes (partial closure), Windes Nature.

’Tis the Season to Tree-cycle
Each year about 25 – 30 million real Christmas trees sold across the U.S. during the holiday season. As important as these trees are to our holiday traditions, they play an even bigger role once the festivities are over. Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource.

Most trees can be chipped and turned into mulch if the right steps are taken during the first weeks after the holidays. Christmas “tree-cycling” requirements are different for each city and hauler—including when the pick-up begins and how long it’s available

Here are some tips to ensure your tree is repurposed the best way possible in your area:
  1. Check ahead with your hauler to find out their schedule for picking up Christmas trees. Missing the last pick-up day means finding another alternative. It is often done on the same as the weekly curbside trash pick-up. You can find OC waste hauler information here.
  2. Find out any special requirements from your waste hauler. Sometimes taller trees must be cut in half before pick-up or even cut into pieces and placed in the greenwaste bin.
  3. Only the tree is recyclable. Remove all decorations, including lights, tinsel, garland, tree stands and ornaments.
  4. Flocked trees cannot be recycled. They may be cut down and placed in your regular trash bin.
  5. If you miss the tree recycling dates of your hauler, check with your city Recycling Coordinator for other options.
  6. If you have Christmas lights or other e-waste to dispose of after the holidays, take it to one of Orange County’s four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find locations and other information here.

December Holiday Season Travel Tips from John Wayne Airport

With the holiday travel season in full-swing, John Wayne Airport (JWA) anticipates a busier-than-normal travel period between December 20, 2017 and January 2, 2018. Last year, more than 500,000 passengers traveled through JWA during this period. JWA travelers can visit www.ocair.com for real-time flight status, parking availability, and road closures and construction activity near the Airport.

Demand for parking during the peak holiday travel period is expected to be high. The Airport recommends passengers consider all parking options available: Terminal-adjacent Parking Structures A1, A2, B2 and C, as well as curbside Valet Parking and the Main Street Parking Lot with free shuttle to the Riley Terminal. Travelers should plan ahead and check real-time parking availability by calling 949-252-5200, or visiting Parking Availability on the Airport’s website.

When visiting John Wayne Airport this holiday season, stop by the new American Heart Association Hands-Only CPR Kiosks. These life-saving kiosks can teach anyone how to do CPR without mouth to mouth in as little as five minutes. The kiosks are located in Terminal A, Gate 8, Terminal B, Gate 12, and Terminal C, Gate 16 and are free to use.
