Thousands Enjoy Inaugural Tustin Hangar Half Marathon and 5k

(L-R) Miss Tustin Emma Foss, Tustin Mayor Allan Bernstein, men’s winner Jose Merino, women’s champion Donna Mills, with Supervisor Todd Spitzer

Approximately 4,000 runners were up extra early on Saturday, March 11 to take part in the Inaugural Tustin Half Marathon and 5k run at the former Marine Corps Air Station. The annual spring run in Tustin was previously known as The Leprechaun Leap 5k. The addition of the half marathon with top-prize money is designed to draw elite runners from around the world to future races.

Supervisor Spitzer sponsored the event again this year along with the Tustin Chamber of Commerce and served as the official starter at the daylight savings spring forward hour of 7 a.m. Men’s race winner Jose Merino of Tarzana finished the 13.1 mile course in 1-hour and 12-minutes. Women’s winner Donna Mills of Texas clocked in at 1-hour, 25-minutes. Both were awarded half-carat diamonds for their championship efforts. The event offers a $100,000 prize for breaking the half marathon world record (58:23 for men, 1:05 for women).

Thanks to race director Mark Holmes, the Tustin Chamber of Commerce, and all the terrific volunteers for making this such a successful and fun event.

Irvine Unified School District Dedicates New Portola High School

District 3 Field Deputy Al Tello presents Supervisor Spitzer’s proclamation to members of the Irvine Unified School District and Principal John Pehrson (far right) at the dedication of Portola High School

Current and past leaders of the Irvine Unified School District gathered with school staff, students, parents and local dignitaries March 2nd to dedicate Portola High School, home of the Bulldogs for many generations to come.

The state-of-the-art Portola High campus, led by Principal John Pehrson, actually opened its doors back in August, welcoming about 450 freshmen within two years of its ceremonial groundbreaking. The school will add a new grade level each year through the fall of 2019, when current ninth-graders will represent the first senior class. Ultimately, Portola will accommodate about 2,400 students.

Special features at the new school include a performing arts building with a 720-seat theater, a “green roof” topped with vegetation to enable hands-on, sustainable learning, a special education facility to develop essential life skills, and state of the art athletic facilities that includes an aquatics center with a 50-meter pool.

Portola High School occupies roughly 42 acres along Irvine Boulevard, west of Alton Parkway. The official address at 1001 Cadence, Irvine.

OC Veterans Annual Report
Orange County Veterans Initiative (OCVI) was launched in 2011 and then expanded in 2015 based on new findings from The State of the American Veteran: The Orange County Veterans Study, a report commissioned by OCCF to bring much needed attention to the challenges facing Orange County veterans. The first-ever comprehensive report on the needs of local veterans, it confirmed that many servicemen and women coming home to Orange County are significantly under-prepared for civilian life, - experiencing significant challenges ranging from not knowing where to find services, to lacking secure employment, to unmet physical and mental health needs.

OCVI aligns donors, businesses and community leaders to focus on three critical areas of need:
  • Transitioning to civilian life
  • Employment readiness and job skills
  • Health services, with an emphasis on mental health needs - in October 2015, with support from our generous donors, OCCF delivered $500,000 to seven nonprofits to support programs that provide a focused approach for transitioning veterans and their families.
The initiative's key goal is to improve critical and fundamental services so that veterans:
  • Know where to go in Orange County to get the services they need
  • Develop trusting relationships with community providers
  • Are connecting early and proactively to services they and their families need
  • Obtain employment in career-oriented opportunities and positions
  • The funding allows high-performing nonprofit veteran service organizations to build their capacity to serve a broader audience.

Walk to Support Veteran’s Employment

Orange County has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation at 4.2%. With an abundance of jobs that often beg for talent, there is a strong need for well-trained candidates to fill these positions. Working Wardrobes VetNet’s , mission is to provide our veterans, service members, their spouses and caregivers with the tools they need to become gainfully employed in the civilian workforce.

The Working Wardrobes’ VetNet 5K Walk and Fun Run will raise the funds needed to put our clients in the training and certification programs they need so that they can say, “I GOT THE JOB!”

Working Wardrobes’ VetNet is a safety net for veterans that provides our clients with an array of occupational and soft skills training, resume development, interview skills workshops, industry-specific certifications, and our signature professional wardrobing service.

“Pay it Forward” and serve them. Walk in their Shoes on March 25th!

Survive and Thrive 5K Run/ Walk Health and Safety Expo

April 8th, 2017 - Mason Regional Park, Irvine

Save the date, Saturday April 8th for the Survive and Thrive 5K Run/Walk Health and Safety Expo. This is an official county event hosted in order to help raise money to support crime survivors and other charities.

As a former police officer, state assemblyman and assistant district attorney, public safety and victim’s rights have always been a top priority throughout my career. I’m proud to have authored Marcy’s Law and chaired the campaign to get the initiative passed by the voters in California in addition to supporting other bills making a difference to crime victims.

Please join our ongoing fight to support crime victims and families by organizing friends and co-workers, form a team to raise donations and participate with me in this year’s event. Vendor booths are still available. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy free food samples and drinks, live music and great vendors! All pre-registered participants receive a t-shirt, finisher medal and goody bag!
