Irvine Police Chief Mike Hamel addresses the audience at the 46th Annual Irvine Police Department Awards Banquet on Friday, March 30th

Congratulations to the men and women of the Irvine Police Department for their dedication to public safety that has Irvine ranked by the FBI as America’s Safest Big City for the 11th year in a row. The IPD celebrated the best of the best among their ranks at the 46th Annual Irvine Police Department Awards Banquet on March 30th.

Officer of the Year Mike Etlinger and Supervisor of the Year Robert Warren with Officer Dave Wills and Chief Mike Hamel
Supervisor Todd Spitzer provided certificates of commendation to all of the award winners, including Police Officer of the Year Mike Etlinger, Supervisor of the Year Robert Warren, Rookie of the Year James Litchfield and Civilian of the Year Allyson Maddy. The evening was highlighted with inspiring video presentations for each of the ten major award recipients and a stirring rendition of Louie Armstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful World” by Irvine Special Olympian Jay White.

Salute to Chief Mike Hamel, the entire IPD staff and event sponsors for once again making the awards banquet a great success.

Supervisor Spitzer addresses the CSP Victim’s Rights Conference

(L-R) Supervisor Todd Spitzer with CSP Supervisor Louie Mendez, supporters Juanita Becerra and Ronnetta Johnson, CSP Executive Director Lilia Arevalo and Chris Bieber of the OC Probation Department

Supervisor Todd Spitzer’s career commitment to fighting for public safety and victims’ rights led him back to the podium as keynote speaker at the 2017 Community Service Programs Victims’ Rights Conference. In 2015, Supervisor Spitzer was presented with the Visionary in Victims Services Award by the non-profit CSP.

As a former police officer and prosecutor, Supervisor Spitzer extended his pursuit of justice for crime victims as a member the California State Assembly where he co-authored and passed Marsy’s Law for All, one of the strongest victims’ rights laws in the country.

Before Marsy’s Law, victims had little access to criminal justice proceedings. Now, it’s mandated that every crime victim has the right to all case information with input on prosecution, sentencing and parole matters.

It gives victims the essential right to restitution and the methods to recover losses. Other states are passing similar legislation modeled on Marsy’s Law.

Survive and Thrive 5K Run/ Walk Health and Safety Expo

Saturday, April 8, 2017 - Mason Regional Park, Irvine

Save the date, Saturday April 8th for the Survive and Thrive 5K Run/Walk Health and Safety Expo. This is an official county event hosted in order to help raise money to support crime survivors and other charities.

As a former police officer, state assemblyman and assistant district attorney, public safety and victim’s rights has been a priority throughout my career. I’m proud to have co-authored Marcy’s Law and chaired the campaign to get the initiative passed by the voters in California in addition to supporting other bills making a difference to crime victims.

Please join our ongoing fight to support crime victims and families by organizing friends and co-workers, form a team to raise donations and participate with me in this year’s event. Vendor booths are still available. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy free food samples and drinks, live music and great vendors! All pre-registered participants receive a t-shirt, finisher medal and goody bag!

Canyon Roads Safety Measures

Supervisor Spitzer works with staff from OC Public Works and CHP to improve safety on Santiago Canyon Road

Safety on County roadways has always been a priority for Supervisor Todd Spitzer. Last October, he held a town hall meeting to discuss safety issues and get community input. In a proactive measure, Supervisor Spitzer is working with OC Public Works to plan and implement better safety signage along canyon roads. On Tuesday April 4th, the Supervisor, OCPW staff and members of the California Highway Patrol teamed up to discuss the placement of radar speed trailers and changeable safety signs along Santiago Canyon Road to improve automobile, bicycle and motorcycle safety. Speed kills. Do not drink and drive!
