Supervisor Todd Spitzer has been an activist for victims’ right throughout his career in public service and was honored to stand with and sponsor crime victims for the 13th straight year at the annual Crime Victims' Survive & Thrive Run/Walk & Health & Safety Expo. The event marked the close of National Crime Victims’ Week and was held at Mason Regional Park in Irvine, future home of the OC Crime Victims’ Monument.

With a decade of service as a reserve police offer, a former prosecutor, State Assemblyman and County Supervisor, Spitzer has always been dedicated to public safety and the rights of crime victims. He co-wrote and led the campaign to pass Marsy’s Law for All, advocating for the rights of innocent victims in our criminal justice system.

Supervisor Spitzer emphasized vigilance and perseverance in his speech at the gathering, targeting recent State prison reform laws that have the unintended consequence of a spike in crime in Orange County and throughout California.

“The State is releasing criminals early. Crime is up more than 20% in our county. Victims are being ignored in large part and victims are being re-victimized,” Supervisor Spitzer told the crowd. “Unless we remain vigilant and stand together, when defendants have 5th and 6th amendment rights and crime victims have minimal rights, we cannot rest,” he stated with the purpose of getting Marsy’s Law extended throughout the country with the goal of a victims’ rights amendment to the U.S. constitution.

Organizer Patricia Wenskunas and fellow crime survivors Erin Runnion, Paul Wilson, Jack & Jason Reilley gave inspirational speeches. Officers and cadets of the OC Sheriff's Department, LASD, Irvine PD with Chief Mike Hamel, and LAPD along with former Irvine Mayor now Assemblyman Steven Choi all took part in the program.
