Supervisor Spitzer Hosts Tele-Town Hall on Fire Safety and the Canyon 2 Fire

Smoke from the Canyon 2 Fire. 80 structures were damaged or destroyed in the fire.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer hosted a Tele-Town Hall event on Thursday, April 5 to discuss fire safety and to review two reports on Orange County Fire Authority’s (OCFA) response to the Canyon 2 Fire.

The two reports by OCFA’s Independent Review Panel (IRP Report) and Fire Review Analyst Steve Danley (Danely Report) focused on the timeliness, quality, and efficiency of OCFA’s initial fire suppression response. The Tele-Town Hall also focused on fire safety and what homeowners can do to help protect their homes from wildfires.

Supervisor Spitzer was joined by OCFA Acting Chief Dave Anderson, Fire Review Analyst Steve Danley, Assistant Chief of Operations Brian Young, Division Chief of Special Operations Brian Norton, and Assistant Fire Marshal for Pre Fire Management Nick Pivaroff.

The Tele-Town Hall is a unique opportunity for residents of the Third District to listen in over the phone and participate in discussion on topics affecting Orange County. The Town Hall is part of Supervisor Spitzer’s efforts to promote transparency in government and education of community issues.

City of Orange Celebrates 130th Birthday with Grand Re-Opening of Yorba Park

Supervisor Todd Spitzer was honored to join Orange Mayor Tita Smith, Mayor Pro Tem Mark Murphy, Councilmember Mike Alvarez, Councilmember Kim Nichols, and dozens of Orange residents for the Grand Re-Opening of Yorba Park and Dog Park and to celebrate the 130th birthday of the City of Orange.

Yorba Park is a great example of the rich history of the City of Orange. The park was renovated as a result of a 2015 compromise between the City and the County of Orange after five years of disagreement over who would manage the cleanup and repairs of the former landfill site at Yorba Park. Supervisor Spitzer was instrumental in bringing the County and the City together to find a win-win solution for the land.

Supervisor Spitzer Joins CHOC and Ronald McDonald House for Walk for Kids OC

Supervisor Spitzer joins racers at the starting line of the Walk for Kids OC on April 8.

Supervisor Spitzer was thrilled to be a part of the opening ceremony of the Ronald McDonald House Walk for Kids Orange County.

“I’m very proud to have the Ronald McDonald House located in my district — two blocks from CHOC Children's in Orange,” Supervisor Spitzer said to the crowd of nearly 2,500 participants.

The Orange County Ronald McDonald House has 20 guest rooms and two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, one at CHOC in Orange and one at CHOC at Mission Hospital. Last year the Orange County Ronald McDonald House welcomed over 2.400 guests, consisting of over 700 families. The two Ronald McDonald Family Rooms had over 50,000 visits from families battling the challenge of having seriously ill children. That’s helping a lot of people!

Unlike the previous two years, participants did not have to traverse through the homeless encampment along the Santa Ana River since the encampment has been removed and the homeless are being assessed and connected to resources.

County Reopened Closed Portion of Santa Ana River Trail on April 7

Clean up has completed on a portion of the Santa Ana River Trail that was closed for an environmental remediation project.

A portion of the Santa Ana River Trail (SART) from Memory Lane in Santa Ana to Taft Avenue in Orange was closed on January 22, 2018, to the public for an environmental remediation project. It was anticipated to remain closed for up to three months.

The County has made significant progress on the project, and a modified public access route will be restored April 7, 2018.

The SART was in need of immediate work to restore it to its original intent—recreation and flood control.

While environmental remediation work is ongoing in some areas, the work zones will be secured by temporary construction fencing. A slightly modified trail route will allow public use of a trail for hiking, bicycling, and equestrian activity only while being separated from continuing project and maintenance activities.

Between January 22 and March 3, the County removed approximately 404 tons of debris and approximately 13,950 needles from the subject area.

All trail users should be aware that seasonal operating hours (7 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October 31) are now being enforced by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department along the entire Santa Ana River Trail within County of Orange boundaries. Pedestrian gates were previously installed at trail entrances to encourage compliance and reinforce publicly posted hours. The gates will be opened daily by OC Parks, but will remain locked outside of public access hours. Violators will be subject to citation and/or other enforcement actions. Thank you for your patience as we endeavor to make repairs and return this trail to its previous condition and to restore one of Orange County’s primary regional bicycle corridors.

Update: Tustin Library Timeline

The Tustin Library is currently undergoing repairs due to a leak discovered last year.

A temporary library has been operational outside the Tustin Library since August 15, 2017. The temporary library’s hours of operation are Tuesday – Thursday (10 am – 7 pm); Friday & Saturday (9 am - 5 pm).

On March 31, 2017, a leak was discovered by County staff in the Tustin Public Library. The leak originated from the water supply for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system under the raised floor. County initiated removal of approximately 125,000 gallons of water, repaired the pipe, and remediated the standing water. The City contacted its insurance carrier to determine the root cause of the leak and the extent of damage to the Library.

On September 19, 2017, City received the damage assessment report from the City’s insurance carrier. The scope of work to repair the Library includes removal of carpet and raised floor panels to access damaged areas, replace some raised floor pedestals, and replace various electrical components, control wiring, flex ducting, piping insulation, and extensive cleaning.

On December 19, 2017, City Council approved plans and specifications and authorized solicitation of bids for the restoration project. On February 6, 2018, City received seven (7) formal bids.

On February 20, 2018, City Council awarded a construction contract to the lowest responsive/responsible bidder. The construction schedule commenced on March 26, 2018 and the anticipated completion date is June 18, 2018 but may be delayed due to change orders or unexpected building issues. Work on the project will take place Monday through Friday between 6:00 am and 2:30 pm with noise kept to a minimum.

OC Public Works and OC Public Libraries have not announced a finalized date for the repairs to be completed.

OCTA Seeks Volunteers to Serve on Citizens Advisory Committee

Are you interested in the transportation needs of Orange County? If so, we need your help. The Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) has openings and we’re recruiting new members. Applications for this OCTA Board-appointed committee are due May 1.

CAC members provide input on a broad spectrum of transportation projects, studies, and outreach activities. During their two-year terms, they identify opportunities for community input, recommend methods for obtaining feedback on specific transportation issues, serve as liaisons between the public and OCTA, and participate in roundtable discussions. Potential committee members should demonstrate a history of participating in community activities and transportation issues, and be willing to dedicate at least 15 hours per year to OCTA meetings and activities. Applications are available here.

For additional information, please contact Karina Diez at (714) 560-5321 or mailto:kdiez@octa.net.
