|
Memorial Day, a holiday to honor and remember those who died fighting for our freedom as Americans, this year occurs on Monday, May 28. Join Supervisor Todd Spitzer and your neighbors for Memorial Day celebrations across the Third District. Whether you attend these events, visit the grave of a loved one, or spend time with family on this special holiday, may it be a day of reflection and gratitude for those who served.
Irvine
The City of Irvine will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony in the Formal Garden at the Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park at 10:00 am. Attendees can memorialize our troops' sacrifice by writing down a brief remembrance to be posted on a memory board at the event. Cards will be available for well-wishers to send a message of appreciation and support to members of Irvine's adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion.

The Shawn and Marci Miller Cancer Research Fund smiles after being recognized at the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge. |
“Like many of the runners, bikers, and walkers here today, I am a cancer survivor!” Supervisor Spitzer said to the crowd of over 1,000 participants at the 2nd Annual UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge on Saturday, May 19.
Supervisor Spitzer challenged his fellow survivors to break down the walls they built during treatment and to live each day knowing they beat the toughest thing life could throw at them.
The Anti-Cancer Challenge is a community movement to raise awareness and funds for cancer research at the UC Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and our pediatric research affiliate, CHOC Children’s. ALL of the money raised for the Challenge goes directly to supporting cancer research!
Congratulations to Superman’s Squad for winning Best Jersey, Merage School Cancer Crushers for winning Most Spirited, and the Shawn and Marci Miller Cancer Research Fund for winning both Biggest Team and Most Fundraised!
Thanks also to Mayor Donald P. Wagner, Director of UCI Cancer Center Rick Van Etten, Lynn Capuya, Rick Gannotta, Lynn Capouya, Interim Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer, UC Irvine Medical Center, and Jim Peterson of Microsemi. |

Supervisor Spitzer Congratulates TUSD Teacher of the Year Winners |
|
TUSD teachers and their families joined the 24th Annual Teacher of the Year Dinner. |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer offered his congratulations to all the distinguished teachers who were recognized at the 24th Annual Teacher of the Year dinner on Friday, May 18 at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.
The annual awards program recognizes outstanding TUSD teachers who have displayed extraordinary teaching, creativity and excellence at their school and in the community.
Carrie Murillo, a Fourth Grade Teacher at W.R. Nelson Elementary School, won Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Joanna Vandal, an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Teacher from Tustin High School, won Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Each Tustin Unified School District school selected a Teacher of the Year nominee from their school and submitted an application to the District Communications Office. The schools’ nominees were then considered as candidates for the TUSD Teachers of the Year Program, which is a prelude to the Orange County/California Teachers of the Year 2018-19 Program. Two Tustin Unified Teachers of the Year – elementary (K-5) and secondary (6-12) – will be announced in March and then go on to the county program. |
