Spitzer Calls for Continued Work in Addressing Mental Health at NAMI Walks OC |
|
Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined NAMI walkers to stomp out stigma of mental illness during the NAMI Walks OC event. |
|
Supervisor Spitzer (C) and NAMI walkers show their support of destigmatizing mental illness. |
Holding a sign that said “Alliance”, Supervisor Todd Spitzer renewed calls to destigmatize mental illness at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Walks OC 5K walk and fundraiser at Angels Stadium on Saturday, September 29.
Mental illness is on the forefront of Orange County residents’ minds. According to the 2017 Point in Time Count, 12 percent of the County’s homeless population suffers from mental illness, and 66 percent of homeless individuals who suffer from a serious mental illness are unsheltered.
“There is no reason you should find yourself homeless in Orange County because of a mental illness,” Supervisor Spitzer said to the crowd of 3,000 NAMI supporters.
NAMI Board President Steve Pitman and NAMI Development Manager Amy Durham encourage the crowd to help them reach their fundraising goal. |
Spitzer directed the audience to look towards an industrial area near the 57 freeway, where the County recently acquired a building that will house the County’s first intensive mental health intake and services unit.
“Orange County will have the first 24/7 intensive psychiatric and mental health services center here in my supervisorial district. We need to be empathetic and compassionate and treat mental illness in our homeless population,” Spitzer said.
In 2018, the County created a Spending Plan to get Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) dollars into projects to help homeless who are suffering from mental health problems.
Saturday’s NAMI Walks OC event was an enormous success, shattering previous records for fundraising and number of participants. NAMI Orange County offers free educational programs, meetings and support groups to address every aspect of mental health. Learn more at http://www.namioc.org/. |

One-Year Anniversary of Route 91 Mass Shooting |
|
|
|
On October 1, 2017, 58 people were murdered and more than 500 were injured in the Route 91 mass shooting in Las Vegas. Supervisor Spitzer called on the public to take a moment to mourn the victims and to show support to survivors of the deadliest mass shooting in our country’s history.
Through the horror of that day, many heroes emerged; people who helped others escape, shielded the injured with their own bodies, and saved lives. Some of those heroes were first responders from Orange County, Los Angeles, and other parts of California who attended the festival. Unfortunately, the County had no way of compensating them for injuries they received while selflessly responding because they were off-duty.
Now, AB 1749, which was recently signed into law, will allow off-duty peace officers who respond to life-threatening, dangerous emergencies to have access to the same benefits as if they were on duty, no matter where the emergencies happened. AB 1749 will also apply to those who responded during the Route 91 festival shooting.
Protecting victims, supporting our law enforcement, and keeping our communities safe is Supervisor Spitzer’s first priority. In a time when California is increasingly limiting first responders’ ability to do their jobs, Spitzer applauds this effort to ensure every peace officer who responds to the call of duty will receive the support and relief they deserve. |
