Spitzer also discussed the County’s efforts to curb homelessness and to better protect our communities.
At the close of the event, Supervisor Spitzer presented a service award to Marvin Waider and the Noble Viking Charities of OC, which raised $68,965 to feed 18,000 people in need during Christmas time this year.

Tustin Tiller Days |
|
Carnival rides, including the Ferris wheel, were just one of the many fun activities at the Tustin Tiller Days festival. |
|
Supervisor Spitzer thanked Cherrill Cady for her service to the City of Tustin. |
Supervisor Spitzer joined Mayor Al Murray, Mayor Pro Tem Beckie Gomez, Councilmembers Allan Bernstein, Letitia Clark, and Chuck Puckett, and hundreds of Tustin residents for Tustin Tiller Days.
The three-day festival is an annual tradition in the City of Trees since 1957. Tiller Days celebrates Orange County’s agricultural heritage while providing an opportunity for local non-profit organizations to promote their cause and raise much-needed funds. The festival this year featured the first annual hot dog eating contest, live music, carnival rides, and the Backyard Brewfest, where attendees mingled and sampled craft beers and ciders from local breweries.
Cherrill Cady, who has volunteered with the Tiller Days Committee for 40 years, was the Grand Marshall at the Tiller Days Parade on Saturday. Supervisor Spitzer presented her with a certificate to thank her for her service. |

A few days after the one year anniversary of the Las Vegas shooting, the deadliest mass shooting in America to date, Supervisor Spitzer brought together a panel of experts—Lt. Dave Klug of the Irvine Police Department, Pasquale Guida of Knowledge Saves Lives, and Christine Laehle of the Department of Education—to discuss active shooter emergencies.
Active shooters can strike in any place at any time, including unfortunately school campuses. To prepare Orange County schools for a potential active shooter situation, the County of Orange recently allocated $4 million to the Orange County Department of Education for mental health wellness programs, building systems of support for students, and providing training courses contracted through Knowledge Saves Lives.

Author Talk: Betty Reid Soskin at the Irvine Katie Wheeler Library |
|
|
|
The County of Orange and OC Public Libraries are pleased to present a conversation and book signing with Betty Reid Soskin. Betty is an author, composer, singer, social and political activist, entrepreneur, historian, blogger, public speaker, and National Park Service Ranger whose remarkable life spans the great American fault lines of the 20th and early 21st centuries. She is the oldest ranger in the National Park Service at 96!
Betty is now touring the country to spread word of her first book, “Sign My Name to Freedom”, a memoir of her long, multifaceted life. She will be visiting the Katie Wheeler Library, 13109 Old Myford Road, Irvine, CA, 92602, on Sunday, October 21st at 2pm. The event is free and no registration required.
Born into a Cajun/Creole African-American family in 1921, she spent her early years in New Orleans in the era of lynching and Jim Crow segregation. Her family later settled in Oakland, California, following the historic floods that devastated the City of New Orleans in 1927. Betty co-founded one of the first Black-owned record stores in Reid’s Records in Berkeley, California, worked with elected officials to rehabilitate the block on which the record shop was located, and served on the staff of a Berkeley City Councilmember and then as field representative to two members of the California State Assembly.
In the 1960’s and 70’s, she was active in the Bay Area's civil rights and Black Power movements, as well as the movement to end the Vietnam War.
In 1995, Betty was named a “Woman of the Year” by the California State Legislature. In 2005 she was named one of the nation's ten outstanding women “Builders of communities and dreams” by the National Women's History Project in ceremonies in both Griffith Park in Los Angeles, and in Washington, D.C.
As a State Assembly field representative, Betty was instrumental in the establishment of Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California, in 2000. She was later hired to work at the Rosie the Riveter Park, and is the oldest ranger in the National Park Service at 96. She is a highly sought-after public speaker and her blog, CBreaux Speaks, has thousands of followers. She introduced President Barack Obama at the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington in 2015.
Betty continues to work for the National Park Service. In 2018, she has spoken at the Commonwealth Club, The Makers Conference in 2018 with Gloria Steinem and many others, at the Muse Festival in Bend Oregon and has events scheduled with Nike, Facebook and will be a featured storyteller at The Moth Main Event at Lincoln Center in New York in April.
