Supervisor Spitzer Stands with Community Leaders Against Jewish Hate Crime

Todd Spitzer (L) stood with civic and religious leaders on November 2 to condemn hate in wake of vandalization of the Beth Jacob Congregation of Irvine. Rabbi Yisroel Ciner is pictured speaking at the podium.

Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined community, religious, and government leaders against the vandal who attacked Temple Beth Jacob synagogue in Irvine on Wednesday.

Together, they decried the act of hate inflicted upon the Jewish community during a press conference today.

“Orange County has traditionally been one of the best places to live in the United States,” Spitzer said. “Over the past three years, our way of life has been shattered by individuals engaging in hate crimes. We have seen a 27 percent in hate crimes since 2015 because these cases are not being prosecuted as vigorously as other surrounding counties.

“I am both shocked and angered at the individuals who would commit these acts and also by the fact that our District Attorney’s Office is not committed to stamping out these crimes,” Spitzer said.

In 2017, hate crime was up 13 percent from the year before, according to a report by the Orange County Human Relations Commission. The Jewish community was the second largest victimized group behind Muslims. In 2016, Jewish individuals were the third largest group.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges in 57 percent of the hate crimes during the past 13 years while Los Angeles County filed 70 percent of their cases. In San Diego and San Bernardino counties, prosecutors filed 80 percent of the hate crime cases referred by law enforcement.

Several recent high profile cases have had hate crime charges stricken by the District Attorney’s Office, while lesser charges were prosecuted.

“This is unacceptable,” Spitzer said of the prosecution rate. “How do we explain this to our victims – that their crimes don’t matter?”

The attack against Temple Beth Jacob was committed by a lone male who used red paint to spray a racial slur on the outside of the building. The individual was caught on video, but so far no arrest has been made. This came four days after 11 worshippers were murdered in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Spitzer Supports Military Families at USO Carnival

Supervisor Spitzer with USO volunteers. USO volunteers serve both home and abroad to support our troops and their families.

On Saturday, November 3, Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined veterans, active members of the military, and military families during the Bob Hope United Service Organizations (USO) Military Family Carnival.

As a “Force behind the Forces,” USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.

Supervisor Spitzer presented a proclamation to Janice Spriggs for being named USO Stateside Volunteer of the Quarter. Janice dedicated nearly 1,000 volunteer hours to USO planning and supporting family days, homecomings and unit events, and collaborating with community groups and organizations to help support the USO’s mission.

Supervisor Spitzer is honored to stand with these fantastic volunteers in their work to support military members and their families!

Supervisor Spitzer offered his congratulations to Toni and John Ginger for their incredible work serving as foster parents to more than 160 children and teens for close to 20 years.

NATIONAL PARK SERVICE AWARDS OC PARKS WITH GRANT TO RESTORE AN AMERICAN TREASURE

Congress through the National Park Service, Department of Interior, selected OC Parks as a grant recipient to “Save America’s Treasures.” The National Park Service, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, provided $4.8 million in grants awarded to 16 projects in 12 states, supporting the preservation of nationally significant historic properties and collections throughout the country.

OC Parks will use the grant for the second-phase restoration of the Joseph Pleasants Stone Building, the oldest building on the National Historic Landmark grounds at Arden: Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens in Modjeska Canyon.

The grant-funded work will include repair to the second floor of the stone building, including restoration of both interior and exterior existing, character-defining features. OC Parks made a significant investment to repair and restore the first-floor stone cellar in 2007. Restoration of the second floor will complete the Pleasants Stone Cottage project, making the structure available to the public for the first time in its history. “With this grant, we will be able to save an intrinsic part of our rich Southern California heritage,” Supervisor Todd Spitzer, Third District, said. “The completion of the restoration project will provide the public with a physical connection to an important piece of history.”

The preservation work under the grant is being supported by the Save America’s Treasure program, which is funded through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The HPF uses revenue from federal oil leases to provide a range of preservation assistance without expending tax dollars.
