Supervisor Spitzer Extends Gratitude to Veterans for their Service |
|
1,776 flags are on display at the Orange Field of Valor to commemorate Veterans Day. |
|
Orange City Council members and residents stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. |
On Sunday, November 11, our country honored both Veterans Day and the Centennial Anniversary of the 1918 Armistice, which marked the end of fighting in World War I. As patriots, we honor and thank those who bravely fought for our country and for our freedom.
Special guest speaker Lt. Col. Caleb Hyatt at the Irvine Veterans Day Ceremony. |
World War I, or the Great War, started in 1914 after escalating hostility between two international military alliances, the Triple Entente of France, Russia, and Britain, and the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria—Hungary and Italy. The United States entered the war in 1917. After years of fighting, on November 11, 1918 at 11:00 am, the guns fell silent and World War I ended. Over the course of the war, more than 4 million American soldiers had been mobilized. The Meuse-Argonne Offensive leading up to the armistice claimed 36,288 lives, the second-highest number of U.S. military fatalities of any battle.
In total, more than 30 million people were killed during the Great War, and international post-war divisions persisted until the end of World War II two decades later. Sunday’s Centennial Anniversary of the Armistice was recognized internationally as a day of solemn reflection.
Orange County held several Veterans Day events to commemorate the day’s significance. In Orange, Mayor Tita Smith led a ceremony marked by patriotic music and inspirational speeches at the Veterans Memorial at Depot Park. Across the city, 1,776 flags are on display in a tribute to veterans as the annual Field of Valor located at Handy Park.
Irvine held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Colonel Bill Barber Memorial Park to pay tribute to all those who have served our country in the military. The special guest speaker was Lt. Col. Caleb Hyatt, U.S. Marine Corps. |

Spitzer Supports Military Families at USO Carnival |
|
Supervisor Spitzer with USO volunteers. USO volunteers serve both home and abroad to support our troops and their families. |
|
On Saturday, November 3, Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined veterans, active members of the military, and military families during the Bob Hope United Service Organizations (USO) Military Family Carnival.
As a “Force behind the Forces,” USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.
Supervisor Spitzer presented a proclamation to Janice Spriggs for being named USO Stateside Volunteer of the Quarter. Janice dedicated nearly 1,000 volunteer hours to USO planning and supporting family days, homecomings and unit events, and collaborating with community groups and organizations to help support the USO’s mission.
Supervisor Spitzer is honored to stand with these fantastic volunteers in their work to support military members and their families! |

Jimboy’s Tacos started out in 1954 in a small trailer on Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe and has built a large following of fans ever since it debuted “The Original American Taco” made with seasoned ground beef, freshly shredded cheese, and lettuce encased in a crispy, stone-ground corn shell dusted with parmesan cheese.

National Park Service Awards OC Parks with Grant to Restore an American Treasure |
|
|
|
Congress through the National Park Service, Department of Interior, selected OC Parks as a grant recipient to “Save America’s Treasures.” The National Park Service, in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, provided $4.8 million in grants awarded to 16 projects in 12 states, supporting the preservation of nationally significant historic properties and collections throughout the country.
OC Parks will use the grant for the second-phase restoration of the Joseph Pleasants Stone Building, the oldest building on the National Historic Landmark grounds at Arden: Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens in Modjeska Canyon.
The grant-funded work will include repair to the second floor of the stone building, including restoration of both interior and exterior existing, character-defining features. OC Parks made a significant investment to repair and restore the first-floor stone cellar in 2007. Restoration of the second floor will complete the Pleasants Stone Cottage project, making the structure available to the public for the first time in its history.
“With this grant, we will be able to save an intrinsic part of our rich Southern California heritage,” Supervisor Todd Spitzer, Third District, said. “The completion of the restoration project will provide the public with a physical connection to an important piece of history.”
The preservation work under the grant is being supported by the Save America’s Treasure program, which is funded through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The HPF uses revenue from federal oil leases to provide a range of preservation assistance without expending tax dollars.
