Board Approves 2,500-Acre Parcel for Creation of Veteran-Civilian Cemetery
County-Owned Site in Anaheim Hills will be Donated to OC Cemetery District |
|
|
|
A veteran’s cemetery is one step closer to reality after the Orange County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved transferring a parcel of open land to the Orange County Cemetery District. Orange County is home to over 120,000 veterans.
The deed would stipulate that the 2,500-acre parcel in Anaheim Hills would be utilized for a cemetery with a requirement that future details about configuration and operation will be decided by the Board of Supervisors at that time. The site is located near the intersection of the 91 Freeway and the 241 toll road in District 3, represented by Supervisor Todd Spitzer.
Spitzer stated, “I worked with Irvine Company owner Donald Bren in 2010 when he dedicated the land to the county. I wanted the assurance before I left the Board of Supervisors that the land would be used for a cemetery.”
Board Chairman Andrew Do and Spitzer jointly introduced the item on the agenda.
“Orange County is committed to preserving the memory of our veterans, today’s vote is proof of that,” Do said. “The sacrifices of our brave service members in defense of our highest ideals is a legacy that we have a responsibility to honor and respect.”
“Orange County has such an incredible military history,” Spitzer added. “Many of us remember when El Toro and Tustin Air Stations were operating. They were such a source of pride for the community. A little known fact is that these military bases date back to WWII and were one of the reasons we won that war – their planes protected the Pacific Rim.”
The cemetery deed stipulates that the property needs to be developed within 10 years and include at least 50 percent of the burial space reserved for veterans. A goal is to have the property designated as a national veteran’s cemetery, which requires state and federal approval.
The Orange County Cemetery District voted today to accept the parcel. The District will have the funding to create the cemetery in stages as it is currently debt-free and has $8 million in reserves. |

Board Honors Hurricane Heroes |
|
(L to R): Supervisor Michelle Steel, Chairman Andrew Do, OCFA Division Chief Ken Dossey, Anaheim Fire Division Chief Tim O’Hara, Anaheim Fire Deputy Chief Pat Russell, Orange City Fire Deputy Chief Chris Boyd, Supervisor Lisa Bartlett, and Supervisor Todd Spitzer. |
|
The Board of Supervisors honored representatives of the California Task Force 5, which was deployed on September 14, 2018 to aid in the response effort for Hurricane Florence.
The Task Force is comprised of more than 220 members from Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), Orange City Fire Department, Anaheim City Fire Department, and civilian doctors, structural engineers, and canine handlers.
Supervisor Spitzer welcomed OCFA Division Chief Ken Dossey, Anaheim Fire Deputy Chief Pat Russell and Division Chief Tim O’Hara, and Orange City Fire Deputy Chief Chris Boyd to the meeting to accept proclamations on behalf of their respective departments.
Hurricane Florence was the most destructive hurricane ever experienced. It caused severe flooding and $18 billion worth of damage, and over 50 people were killed. Sixteen members from the Task Force drove 61 hours straight to help the communities impacted. During the seven days they were operating, Task Force 5 made six rescues.
Supervisor Spitzer was honored to thank these extraordinary heroes. |

Statement on the Passing of Former President George H. W. Bush |
|
|
|
It is impossible to talk about the political career of former President George H.W. Bush without realizing the level of grace and respect he extended to those who did right, regardless of their background, ideology, or opinions about him personally.
From his service in World War II, to his election to the House of Representatives, to his time spent as Vice President and—of course—serving as the 41st President, Bush hailed the type of politics meant to improve the public good.
A steady hand guiding the nation, Former President Bush’s peacekeeping talks extinguished credible threat of nuclear attack from the Soviet Union, his cooperation with a divided government curbed the country’s deficit, and his calls for a “thousand points of light” of volunteerism encouraged the country and his fellow politicians to place principle above all else.
He offered pragmatic policies and a kind disposition to our nation. He served this country honorably as a leader of respect, strength, and integrity.
I send my thoughts and prayers to the Bush family during this time. |

Spitzer Joins Community Meeting on New North Tustin Park |
|
Spitzer (L) led the meeting along with OC Parks to gather community input on the new park. |
|
Spitzer and a member of OC Parks look at design options for the new park. |
Supervisor Spitzer joined the County of Orange and OC Parks for a community meeting to seek public input about a new park in the North Tustin area. Spitzer has been an advocate for the creation of this park since he returned as Third District Supervisor in 2013.
The meeting was held to receive feedback from local residents on the new park’s design and plan. The park site is located on a vacant 2.5-acre parcel on the southwest corner of Newport Ave and Crawford Canyon Road.
The park will be an asset to the neighborhood, and residents are encouraged to identify what features to include in the final design. Go to http://www.ocparks.com/about/projects/crawford_canyon for an overview of this project. |
