BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

Welcome to Nelson's E-News!

Dear Friends,

Thank you for once again reading my newsletter. As always, there are many important items below that I hope you will find informative and helpful.

The Board of Supervisors held a special meeting on September 6 to, among other things, review the County’s real estate assets and, again, try to decide the content of television programming. More details of that item may be found in my previous newsletter. Below, I have included a more thorough account of the County redistricting process, one of the other items discussed at the meeting. From the September 13 regular meeting I have include a description of a resolution supporting the proposed NFL stadium in Industry that the Board approved.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Supervisors is Tuesday, September 20 at 9:30 am. The meeting will be located at 333 W. Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana 92701 on the first floor.

Please also keep up to date on some of the events that have occurred or are coming up soon in our community. There are many more opportunities for you to participate and become involved.

Thank you and have a good weekend.

Sincerely,
Shawn Nelson.

BOARD UPDATES

County Redistricting
spacer

The Board finalized its decennial redistricting process at its special meeting on September 6. The new Supervisorial boundaries are intended to keep all five districts in the County at about the same population for the next ten years while keeping intact as many communities as possible. This means that Anaheim west of the 57 freeway (plus the area south of Ball Road and west of Phoenix Club Drive), Fullerton, La Habra and Placentia all remain in the Fourth District.

The two major changes for the district are the inclusion of the City of Brea and a split in the City of Buena Park. The Fourth District maintains the portion of Buena Park east of Western and north of the 91 freeway while the portion west of Western and south of the 91 freeway shifts to the Second District represented by Supervisor Moorlach.

To the incoming constituents of the district, please accept a hearty welcome! To those remaining in the district, please know that the office will continue to be a resource for you at the County level.

The new district lines take effect on Thursday, October 6. Please see below for a map of the new Fourth District.

Supervisors Support Majestic’s NFL Stadium
spacer

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted today to endorse Majestic Realty’s Los Angeles Stadium project. In its unanimous decision, the Board of Supervisors became the third neighboring county to endorse Majestic’s proposed state-of-the-art NFL stadium and retail campus.

“Our stadium will spread economic growth throughout the entire four-county region and will provide fans the ultimate game-day experience,” said John Semcken, vice president of Majestic Realty. “Modeled after the most successful stadiums in the NFL, our state-of-the-art stadium is positioned at the heart of our region’s population and business centers.”

“Majestic Realty’s Los Angeles Stadium will create tremendous economic benefit for Orange County. With a location just 15 minutes from the central Anaheim tourism center, the stadium offers a needed boost to Orange County’s hotel and restaurant community,” said Supervisor Shawn Nelson. “The prospect of a Super Bowl adds to that exponentially. The citizens of Orange County would benefit significantly from the thousands of jobs and look forward to participating in the ultimate game-day experience once a team arrives.”

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors endorsed Majestic in May and the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors endorsed the project in June. In total, over 130 organizations, elected officials, cities, counties and leaders have endorsed Los Angeles Stadium at Grand Crossing.

IN THE COMMUNITY

The Gary Center Receives Improvements and Visit by Vanna White
spacer
A few weeks ago, Supervisor Nelson was pleased to honor a community and charitable effort that oversaw great improvements to the Gary Center in La Habra.  The project coordinated by Rebuilding Together OC, Maxwell House, Wheel of Fortune and The Gary Center turned into a great day that resulted in much needed improvements to the Gary Center’s infrastructure.  Wheel of Fortune co-host Vanna White was on hand to assist the project and rally volunteers.  Supervisor Nelson’s office was proud to suggest The Gary Center be selected for improvements when asked to recommend a site for the project by Rebuilding Together OC.  The entire operation was a massive success and a true collaborative effort by all who were involved.

Remembering 9/11

A note from Supervisor Nelson

As the Supervisors reflected on the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks during Tuesday’s Board meeting, Supervisor Nelson reminded his colleagues and the audience not to forget the veterans who have suffered gravely in the past decade since the attacks, the impacts of which will be felt for the next several generations.

As the country remembers 9/11, there are thousands of young people facing a lifetime of rehabilitation due to their physical challenges and emotional anguish, especially those suffering severe disfigurement, an inability to speak and incapability of basic functions. For some, it may seem so long ago, but it will be forever to those with these life-changing injuries and we have an obligation to them.

Fourth District staffer Steve Spernak participated in 9/11 rallies and memorial tributes this past Sunday as America honored the victims and first responders on the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.
