Welcome to Nelson's E-News!
Thank you for reading this edition of my newsletter. I hope you find the information below very helpful. As always, I appreciate and look forward to your feedback.

The Board of Supervisors was dark on Tuesday. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 21 at 9:30am in the Hall of Administration – 333 W. Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana 92701. The agenda is available here.

Due to the holiday weekend and lack of a Board meeting, I was able to attend more events in the community. Please see photos and descriptions below. This weekend, I hope to see you at the 58th Annual Silverado Days celebration at William Peak Park in Buena Park. If you are unable to attend, there are other events listed at the end of the newsletter.

Thousands Celebrate Heritage Days with Supervisor Nelson

Supervisor Nelson and wife, Sharon, enjoyed celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Placentia Heritage Days on their 1932 Packard as they waved to 20,000 friends on Kraemer Blvd.

Placentia City Clerk Pat Melia, left, joins Policy Advisor Steve Spernak at Supervisor Nelson’s public information booth at Tri-City Park.

Congratulations to Placentia Community Services Director Johnathan Nicks for delivering another perfect adventure for 20,000 residents who came out to enjoy the parade and day-long celebration of Heritage Days 2014.

The 50th anniversary theme carried over to the thousands who lined Kraemer Blvd. and enjoyed the marching bands, St. Catherine’s Cadets stepping in military precision and VIP who rode fire-trucks and vintage cars northbound from Yorba Linda Blvd. The city celebration commemorates the agricultural history of Placentia and allows non-profits to raise funds for their programs, travel and equipment for their coming sports seasons or community service projects.

Supervisor Nelson and his wife Sharon enjoyed their ride up Kraemer Blvd., waving at friends seated on beach chairs and standing on the balconies of their homes.

The parade ended at Tri-City Park where vendors and non-profits who had set up early Saturday morning provided hand-made wares, novelties, sports apparel and the best grilled hamburgers in the city, provided by the El Dorado Boys Varsity Basketball booster club.

Another hit was the Friends Garden where adults enjoyed BBQ bratwurst and ice cold brews while enjoying ESPN closed circuit football games in the shade of the wooden canopies and picnic tables.

Congratulations to the car clubs and collectors who displayed the amazing classics and restored vintage cars that fans could view throughout the day. Photos of these restorations became works of art to the thousands who visited the displays on the west side of the park.

For more information on how you can be part of next year’s pageantry or be a vendor for the day at Tri-City Park, contact City of Placentia Community Services at (714) 993 -8232.

Care Packages Rally Set for October 26

Supervisor Shawn Nelson will help collect and donate care package items going to Kabul, Afghanistan at his “Cigars for Heroes” collection rally on October 26. Veterans, military family members and citizen-patriots are welcome to stop by and drop donations, take pictures and savor a cigar while collecting items that will be sent to active-duty military in November.

Continuing his legacy of supporting active duty military stationed overseas with a taste of freedom from appreciative family, friends and veterans in Orange County, Supervisor Shawn Nelson has announced that he will host a four hour rally at Vintage Cigars, located at 3734 S. Bristol, Santa Ana (South Bristol at Callen Common behind the Bank of America), from 1:00-5:00pm, Sunday, October 26.

This year’s charity will honor Captain Shane Yates, a Chaplain assigned to the 162nd Infantry Division who is now in Kabul, Afghanistan. Yates ministers to front-line combat troops who are bunkered in forward operating bases in remote mountain and desert posts. His ministry allows him to deliver prayers, mail and fresh cigars to battle-weary troops who cheer his arrival when he steps off a gunship transport.

Captain Yates lives in Placentia, has a wife, Karon, who is active with the Healing Heroes Ministry, a son who is active-duty military and another son (Travis) playing football for Orange Lutheran High School. Captain Yates also coached the freshmen football team at Orange Lutheran prior to his deployment.

The Orange Lutheran football teams has dedicated their season and prayers to the safety of the 162nd and wear their division patches as stickers on their football helmets, according to Karon Yates, to honor his courage and faith in combat.

The purpose for the rally is to accept donated items requested by the troops. Other than cigars, products most requested included protein powder packs, ground coffee, beef jerky packets, top ramen soup, flavored water packets such as Crystal Light, energy powder mixes, mixed nuts, candy, microwavable foods, protein bars, magazines, gum, mints and stationery for writing home.

All the donated food items, along with cigars, will be packaged and sent to Captain Yates at the front for distribution to the troops from the residents of Orange County.

Please bring your donated items to the rally on October 26 or drop them off at the offices of Shawn Nelson at the OC Hall of Administration, located at Broadway and Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana, located on the fifth floor.

Cigars can be either purchased on-site on the day of the event or we can convert donated funds toward the purchase on your behalf.

If you have any questions on this project to honor America’s Bravest, or have any desire to help, please contact Steve Spernak at (714) 834-3542 or email him at Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com.

Orange County Veterans Resource Guides Delivered

Supervisor Nelson delivered his thanks and appreciation to the Community Services staff who prepared and published the first 2,500 copies of the OC Veterans Resource Directory.

Published annually, the 2014 edition now includes how to contact the new Orange County Veterans and Military Families Collaborative. The OCVMFC is located at 601 N. Golden Circle, Santa Ana, and has some 140 agencies, technicians, medical and psychological specialists who partnered to help Veterans living in Orange County.

This resource was produced by Karen Roper of OC Community Services, Chase Wickersham and Bobby McDonald of OC Veterans Advisory Council, the Red Cross, Deanne Tate of Veterans First to help the 133,000 veterans living in OC. Call (714) 481-5306 or “211” to get connected with this terrific program.

Also included in the Guide are the OC County One-Stop Centers where Veterans can get help with job placement, resumes, job fairs, transition and interview training essential to beginning a new job or career in OC. Establishing these programs were critical as there are a projected 275,000 Veterans looking to settle in Orange County over the next five years, according to the Orange County Business Journal research.

Having this information in a single catalog was essential to speed delivery of information and networking into what is becoming the finest Veterans service-providers system in California and a proven template for how county teams can manage partnership-resources in the United States.

The Guide will be available by contacting OC Veterans Service Office at (714) 480-6555 or emailing Steve Spernak at the office of Supervisor Nelson at Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com.

The guide is also available electronically below.

JWA Displays Abstract Paintings by Local Artist Steve Adam

As part of John Wayne Airport’s Community Focus Space Program, a selection of paintings by Steve Adam can be seen on the Departure (upper) Level near the security screening areas in Terminals A, B and C and on the Arrival (lower) Level adjacent to Baggage Carousels 1 and 4 from October 16, 2014 through November 13, 2014.

Adam deems his painting style as both modern abstract expressionism and representational. His imagination inspires his artwork - he paints not only what he sees, but what he feels. In Adam’s current coastal focus artwork, he selects palm trees, beaches, wildlife and wetlands to play below his signature glowing sun or moon. Adam's energy flows through his brushstrokes as he depicts his freedom of expression on canvas.
