County Public Health Officer Eric Handler Named 2015 Physician of the Year
(Courtesy of CEO Communications)

County of Orange Public Health Officer Eric Handler, MD, is the 2015 Physician of the Year, an honor bestowed by the Orange County Medical Association.

The award recognizes physicians for being hard-working, exhibiting extraordinary professional competence, serving as an educator and mentor for associates and nurses, being a strong motivator and displaying good rapport with patients. Handler was selected from among 40 nominees.

In addition to his duties as County health officer, a position he has held since August 2006, Handler is widely recognized for his leadership in efforts to end hunger and address homelessness in Orange County.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Illumination Foundation, the organization responsible for moving homeless families to permanent shelters. He also co-founded and remains a force WasteNot Orange County, an organization that facilitates the transfer of leftover and unused food from restaurants and grocers to those who are suffering from hunger and food insecurity.

In the past, Handler has served as the deputy secretary for Children’s Medical Services in the Florida Department of Health and Chief Medical Officer for the Florida Department of Children and Families. He also served as the chief medical officer for the Boston Regional Office for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Handler accepted the award at a May 2015 event, at which Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Spitzer presented the keynote address.

OC Fair Express Bus Service Launches July 17
(Courtesy of OCTA)

The Orange County Transportation Authority is getting people to the OC Fair quicker than ever with more frequent OC Fair Express bus service and an additional stop in Anaheim this year.

The OC Fair Express will provide non-stop weekend service from nine locations to the OC Fair from July 17 to Aug. 16. Buses will run every 20 minutes from Fullerton and Huntington Beach, every 30 minutes from Santa Ana and every 40 minutes from the two Anaheim stops, Irvine, Laguna Hills, Orange and San Juan Capistrano. Service runs between noon and midnight on Fridays and 10 a.m. and midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.

The bus service costs $2 each way and riders will receive a coupon valid for $3 admission to the fair — a savings of $9 off the regular ticket price.

The express service begins with a kick-off celebration at 10:30 a.m. July 17 at the Irvine Transportation Center, 15215 Barranca Parkway. Attendees will have the opportunity to win prizes and the first 100 people can catch the 11:25 a.m. OC Fair Express for free from the event.

In 2014, the OC Fair Express, which ran hourly, recorded nearly 77,000 boarding’s, a 31 percent increase in ridership over the previous year.

To purchase tickets in advance, riders can download the OC Fair Express app, which also provides bus service schedules and routes.

Riders can catch an OC Fair Express from nine locations:
  • Anaheim: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, 2626 E. Katella Ave.
  • Anaheim Canyon: Anaheim Canyon Metrolink Station, 1039 N. Pacificenter Drive
  • Fullerton: Fullerton Park-and-Ride, 3000 W. Orangethorpe Ave.
  • Huntington Beach: Goldenwest Transportation Center, 7301 Center Ave.

The OC Fair Express is made possible in part by a grant provided by the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee. The committee provides subsidies for cleaner transportation alternatives.

Special OC Parks Announcement
OC ZOO WELCOMES NEW BEAR
The OC Zoo will introduce its newest animal – a young California black bear – at a special event Saturday, July 25.

The female bear, named Elinor, is believed to be a little more than one year old. Her official welcome will take place at 1:30 p.m. during the OC Zoo’s Zookeeper Appreciation Day event.

Elinor was found last year wandering alone in Humboldt County as a young cub and is believed to have been hit by a car. The cub recovered, but would not have survived in the wild.

Elinor found a new home at the OC Zoo via the Calif. Department of Fish and Wildlife. The OC Zoo cares for animals native to the desert southwest that cannot be released to the wild due to health or socialization issues. Elinor and the zoo’s other bear, Yo-Yo, will be on exhibit alternate days for the safety of both animals. Introducing young animals in enclosures with older, established animals often carries a risk.

OC Zoo staff plans to place Elinor on exhibit in the bear enclosure Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to let the new bear get accustomed to her new surroundings. Yo-Yo, will be on exhibit Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Those wishing for a sneak peek at Elinor prior to the official welcoming event may visit the zoo starting July 13. However, OC Zoo animal keepers will be carefully monitoring the new bear and her time in the enclosure will be subject to last minute changes.

The OC Zoo is located in Irvine Regional Park, at 1 Irvine Park Road in Orange. The zoo is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $2.

Supervisor Shawn Nelson Assists West Anaheim/ La Colonia Residents in Free Community Cleanup
On Saturday, July 11th, the County of Orange and Supervisor Shawn Nelson’s office helped residents of unincorporated West Anaheim at the annual West Anaheim/La Colonia Community Clean-Up event.

The County of Orange planned this full-service disposal event in collaboration with Republic Services, the community’s waste hauling provider, and Goodwill of Orange County. To facilitate the cleanup, Republic Services, donated and placed 12 waste containers throughout the La Colonia neighborhood, all of which were completely filled resulting in the safe and proper removal of approximately 35 tons of unwanted waste materials. Bolsa Grande High School ASB students and other community volunteers also contributed to the success of the event by proudly volunteering their time to take part in the community clean-up effort.

The neighborhood’s Anaheim Family Resource Center hosted other participants in their parking lot, including Goodwill’s e-waste disposal, OC Neighborhood Preservation, OC Waste & Recycling, and Rethink Your Drink, each of which had educational, family-friendly booths. Steve Spernak, representing Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson, gladly helped residents at multiple bins, while serving-up a delicious, complimentary barbecue lunch for all participants.

The success of this neighborhood cleanup comes from the outstanding collaboration between the County of Orange and the La Colonia residents--working together to build a better community. The County of Orange provides this service annually to various communities within the unincorporated County islands.
