County Approves Homeless Shelter Site in Anaheim
Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to purchase the building and land at 1000 N. Kraemer Place in Anaheim. OC Community Resources, the department in charge of County housing programs, will solicit proposals for the development and operation of the shelter under rigorous security guidelines adopted by the Board, including prohibiting walk-in clients and those with criminal backgrounds.

The process of identifying a year-round homeless shelter began five years ago under the stewardship of Supervisor Shawn Nelson, who represents the Fourth District and much of Anaheim. This is a long overdue initiative that will benefit those most in need of support and provide them a center to retrieve essential services necessary to improve their lives.

Eighty-five people spoke at the special meeting held to consider the property purchase, with more than twice as many speakers supporting the proposal than were opposed. The County will pay $4.25 million for the 24,384 square-foot industrial warehouse and 12,842 square feet of office space, situated on about 1.87 acres with 68 parking spaces. The building, built in 1975, had been occupied by a commercial heating, ventilating and air conditioning contractor.

The cities of Anaheim and Fullerton contributed $500,000 each toward the project, with $100,000 coming from the city of Brea. The city councils of Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, Orange and Placentia adopted resolutions in support.

An environmental review of the property found no substantial evidence that the proposed use would have a significant effect on the environment. A purchase and sale agreement was approved by the Board in June but a final vote was needed to execute the grant deed for the property.

The County has operated a seasonal armory shelter program in Fullerton and Santa Ana for the past 28 years. However, the armories were only open part of the year and only at night.

The Board of Supervisors hearing room was at full capacity on 11/17/15

Robin Stieler Appointed Clerk of the Board
The Board of Supervisors has appointed Robin Stieler, an 18-year veteran of the Clerk’s office, to formally take over the duties of Clerk of the Board.

Stieler has filled the position on an interim basis since former Clerk Susan Novak retired in February.

Stieler was hired in January 1997 by then-Clerk Darlene Bloom and assigned to the Assessment Appeals division. In 2001, she moved to the Board Services Division and progressed in the office through a series of promotions. In December 2013, then-Clerk Novak promoted her again to the position of Chief Deputy.

Stieler is a member of the California Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Association, the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials and the Orange County City Clerks Association. She and her husband live in Yorba Linda.

The Clerk of the Board is selected by and reports to the Board of Supervisors. Under the terms of her three-year contract, Stieler will receive an annual salary of $140,317, which is the same amount earned by her predecessor.

Supervisor Celebrates Fullerton Veterans Day March
Supervisor Nelson was among a contingent of VIP and dignitaries where he lead hundreds of Veterans on their traditional march up the Harbor Blvd of Heroes as the City of Fullerton rallied to show their appreciation at Veterans Day 2015.

Under the direction of Marilyn Harris, Commander, Fullerton American Legion Post 142, and her husband, Jeff, the parade and program that involved moving hundreds of Veterans and bands, drill teams and residents was another amazing success of timing and pageantry.

After an introduction and welcome by MC Ed Paul, an aerial missing man formation flyby, and national anthem collage by Kristen Romero, the patriotic keynote message about heroism and sacrifice was delivered by Brigadier General Sylvia Crockett of the United States Army.

Supervisor Nelson presented General Crockett a framed copy of the Abraham Lincoln speech titled “America” and a heroes shirt that his office presented to Veterans at the Fullerton parade and OC Fairgrounds as a small gesture of thanks for their service and sacrifices defending our freedom.

Supervisor Nelson was honored to lead hundreds of Veterans and retired military in his annual walk up Harbor Blvd in Fullerton. Seen here with Congressman Royce, ASM Young Kim, Mayor Greg Sebourn and Councilman Bruce Whitaker, the Veterans Day march to Hillcrest gave OC a chance to say thanks after 50 years to returning Vietnam patriots who were given heroes shirts by Policy Advisor Steve Spernak.

OC Fairgrounds Hosts Veterans Day 2015
Nine months in the planning turned into magic at the OC Fairgrounds last week when thousands of Veterans attended the Veterans and Labor Partners in Service appreciation day and memorial gala that was touted as one of the largest ceremonies on the West Coast.

Special thanks were delivered by the Supervisor to Cathy Yatch and Carina Pantone with the OCEA and Bobby McDonald, chairman of the OC Veterans Advisory Council, who planned and deployed 80 booths with vendors, technicians, service officers and non-profits who help Veterans with health, housing, education and employment. A BBQ and beer booth highlighted the day for friends to relax and enjoy memories of decades past in their military service.

The food drive associated with the day was successful and the day-long crowds enjoyed a day of hugs and tears as they celebrated the coming home theme for the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

Supervisor Nelson honors attending Veterans with free cigars and hero Shirts designed and donated by employees and the owner of Hurley International, along with Veteran Services Resource Guides and Council on Aging benefits magazines.

Sincere thanks and blessings on America’s military and Veterans for their patriotism and selfless commitment to protect this nation, our families and future of the greatest nation in history.

Supervisor Nelson was honored to team with OCEA staff to deliver one of the largest Veterans Day galas on the West Coast. USPS dedicated the new Vietnam Medal of Honor stamp and Treasurer Shari Freidenrich joined with the Supervisor for photos. Veterans enjoyed the free cigars and heroes shirts the Supervisor gives out at his booth that became a hospitality center where the Supervisor thanked OCEA volunteers for their work with cigars, shirts and sodas

Supervisor Supporting Caterina’s Club and KFI
The day began at 5 a.m. when KFI legend Bill Handel took the microphone to begin a full day of promotions to raise food and money as part of their annual charity contribution to raise money and pasta for Bruno Serato and his mom’s foundation, Caterina’s Club.

Bruno started the program years ago to honor his mom who discovered local kids were having potato chip and Snicker bars for dinner after they spent the afternoon at the local Boys and Girls Club.

That inspired Bruno’s mom to start the foundation and raise money and pasta to feed the 180 kids nightly in the Anaheim motel and low-income apartments near their restaurant, The White House.

Jumping ahead to 2015, Supervisor Nelson, who has donated publicity and pasta to the project since 2010, directed Policy Advisor Steve Spernak to make the pasta drop and present the afternoon KFI team of John and Ken with his letter of appreciation for their media work and radio rally in Anaheim.

Steve Spernak also delivered copies of the 2015 OC Veterans Day hero Shirt to Bruno, John & Ken and Bill Handel as a thank you gesture from the people of Orange County for the weeks of work they delivered to raise $217,000 and 69 tons of pasta/sauce that will feed some 1600 kids a night in OC.

For more information on how you can help Bruno and his mom’s charity, please contact Kaylee Duff at Kaylee@caterinasclub.org or call her at 714 408 5762 or contact Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com in Supervisor Nelson’s offices.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivered pasta and Supervisor Nelson’s letter of appreciation to the KFI team who helped raise $217,000 and 69 tons of pasta and sauce. Bruno Serato got the same shirts presented to Bill Handel and John & Ken at the White House Restaurant.
