Supervisors Settle Lawsuit Involving County Building |
|
The Orange County Board of Supervisors has settled a lawsuit alleging unsafe conditions at a Social Services Agency building in Orange.
Details of the settlement are pending court approval and not available for release. The County opted to settle the lawsuit, filed in 2010, because of uncertainties with the outcome of a jury trial and the impact of a state law that allows any party found to be just 1% at fault to pay an entire economic damage award.
The County initially leased and began occupying the building at 840 N. Eckhoff Street in 1993. In 2009, the building was purchased after an independent site assessment found no environmental concerns and confirmed that the building was safe for business operations. Extensive testing of the soil and air in and around the Eckhoff facility was conducted over the past five years. The tests concluded that the building is safe and could be occupied by employees for regular use without restrictions.
The County is committed to ensuring that all of its facilities remain safe for employees and the public. Employees have been informed of the settlement decision and encouraged to share any concerns with management. The County will conduct air-quality assessments as needed of the Eckhoff building going forward and share the results with employees.
The lawsuit is Gavin Kirk, et al v. County of Orange, et al., Orange County Superior Court
Case No. 30-2010-00423097 and related cases 30-2013-00629446. |

$19.5 Million Awarded to Improve Biking, Walking in O.C. |
|
The Orange County Transportation Authority board of directors approved more than $19.5 million to help Orange County cities improve their bikeways and walkways. Funding through the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program was awarded to 13 projects that promote mobility options by increasing safety, provide regional linkages to key destinations, close bikeway corridor gaps and improve air quality across the county.
Projects that received funding are in Anaheim, Dana Point, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Tustin and the County of Orange.
A call for projects was issued by OCTA in March, making available $20 million for bicycle and pedestrian projects. The project applications were reviewed by an advisory panel and funding was granted based on project readiness, local match contribution, cost-benefit ratio, connectivity to surrounding amenities and compliance with state and federal laws and requirements.
Projects awarded funding include:
- $2.3 million for Main Street/El Camino Real improvements in Tustin
- $2.27 million for protected bicycle lanes on Bristol Street in Santa Ana
- $2.22 million for a bicycle boulevard on Wilshire Avenue in Fullerton
- $2.07 million to extend the bikeway and walkway on Coast Highway in Dana Point
- $1.11 million for bicycle corridor improvements in Garden Grove
Prior to this award, OCTA has funded 27 projects with a value of nearly $10 million through the Bicycle Corridor Improvement Program. OCTA sets aside 10 percent of its federal CMAQ funds for bicycle and pedestrian projects |

La Habra Corn Festival 2016 |
|
Supervisor Shawn Nelson joined the City of La Habra in celebrating its annual Corn Festival. The community gathered at El Centro Lions Park from Friday, August 5 to Sunday, August 7 for free games, rides, and music. A variety of local vendors sold their products, from jewelry to homemade fruit wreaths. Nelson staffers maintained a booth at the festival throughout the weekend to distribute County informational brochures and answer constituents’ questions about County government.
On Saturday morning, Supervisor Nelson participated in the annual parade, greeting residents from a convertible driven by Policy Advisor Steve Spernak.
We extend our gratitude to the La Habra Lions Club, who as always successfully hosted this community event. We also thank the vendors, volunteers, and organizations who participated in the festival and parade. Supervisor Nelson and staff look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s La Habra Corn Festival.
The La Habra Host Lions Club is a very active and committed club. It takes the International Motto of “We Serve” to heart. Club membership consists of about 100 individuals who make up a crossover of community active professionals, civic leaders and dynamic people who care to contribute their time, talent and treasure to support the important work that Lions do in their community and beyond. There is absolutely no paid staff. The club is strictly volunteered driven. The Club also supports a very active Leos Club, a youth mentor program.

North Orange County Tax Seminar |
|
Board of Equalization member Diane Harkey hosted a very successful North Orange County Tax Seminar this week. The free event was for nonprofit and exempt organizations to learn more strategies for success in today’s economy. The seminar was held at California State University Fullerton in the Gianneschi Center for nonprofit research from 9am to 3pm this past Thursday. Some of the topics included sales and use tax for nonprofits, employment taxes, and regulation of charities. Local Young Artist Joins Eco Challenge Poster Contest Hall of Fame |
|
Congratulations to Buena Park resident, Oscar Madrid, age 14. He is the 2016 Eco Challenge Poster Contest winner representing the Fourth District. The Eco Challenge contest is sponsored by OC Waste & Recycling in partnership with Discovery Cube Orange County and Angels Baseball. This year’s contest theme is to promote the eco-friendly benefits of recycling food and green waste.
Why is it important to recycle food and green waste in Orange County? Organic waste accounts for more than a third of the material in California’s waste stream. Collecting and processing organic materials to meet new mandates will change how we manage waste within our homes and contribute to bigger change. For information on playing your part, visit CalRecycle.
Oscar was chosen from more than 400 total contestants and will be recognized in a special on-field presentation prior to the Angels game on Friday, September 9th. In addition, Oscar will serve as an honorary Bat Kid at an Angels game. Come to the game on September 9th and cheer him on! |
