Board of Supervisors takes action against United Airlines for gender discrimination
At the October 11th Board of Supervisors meeting Supervisor Nelson, addressed a gender discrimination incident that allegedly occurred on a United Airlines flight at John Wayne Airport against Ms. Mary Campos. The Airport is operated by the County of Orange. The Board of Supervisors took action to revise our airport access contracts with all air carriers to ensure that no discrimination is tolerated based on any federally protected classes. This action received widespread coverage in the media.

What’s in Your Medicine Cabinet?

The Health Care Agency (HCA) will join local law enforcement and community partners in promoting the collection of expired, unused or unwanted prescription medications in support of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) “National Take Back Day” on Saturday, October 22.

According to results from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the most common source for the last prescription pain medication misused by individuals over age 12 in the past year belonged to a friend or relative. Folks can help prevent this from happening by disposing of unwanted prescription medications at this special event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at more than 30 locations throughout Orange County.

The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked. To locate a collection site in your area, please visit the DEA’s website here. To learn more about drug abuse prevention efforts in Orange County, visit http://ochealthinfo.com/adept.

Heritage Days - Placentia
Congratulations to city staffers Steve Pischel, Damien Arrula, Veronica Ortiz and parade director Janice Lacher for delivering another chamber of commerce morning parade and city festival as the city of Placentia celebrated their 52nd annual Heritage Days gala.

Blessed with 80 degree temperatures and crystal blue skies, the days fun began for Supervisor Nelson at the parade staging area at Kraemer and Sheffield where he met with city council members, citizen of the year Rosalina Davis, little league champions and invited VIP who would travel the 1.5 mile route up Kraemer Blvd to Tri-City Park.

This year, Supervisor Nelson enjoyed meeting the Miss Placentia court of Alana Hamilton and her princesses as they staged for the parade. Supervisor Nelson was proud to hear of their academic accomplishments and time-management skills needed to handle competition, civic events and community appearances while balancing jobs and classes.

Once parade boss Janice Lacher gave the ‘go’ signal, the parade up Kraemer gave Supervisor Nelson 45 minutes to wave at and talk to the thousands of attending families and flag-waving residents who set up canopies and beach chairs for the 3 hour parade.

Once to Tri-City Park, Policy Advisor Steve Spernak worked the day handing out County brochures to seniors, Veterans and talked to residents anxious who enjoyed hearing about the accomplishments and projects Supervisor Nelson delivers as their representative.

Congratulations to all involved in the parade and city festival at Tri-City Park that raises thousands of dollars for booster clubs, civic groups, Chamber of Commerce networking and community pride in historic Placentia!

Supervisor Nelson enjoys pre-parade talk with Councilman Scott Nelson and Citizen of the Year Rosalina Davis.

Supervisor Nelson talked college and careers with Ms. Placentia Alana Hamilton and her court before the parade.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak compared cowboy hats with Placentia Chamber of Commerce Director Leah Skinner at Tri-City Park.

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day
Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day was a great time for families and kids of all ages, helping to improve biking skills, proper trail etiquette, and clean and healthy family fun. About 150 registered riders as young as under 2 years, and a total participation amount of approximately 250.

A big thank you to SHARE Mountain Bike Club who presented a $5,000 check to the OC Parks foundation from REI to be used for the proposed Craig Bike Park at Craig Regional Park in Fullerton. Accepting the check on behalf of Shawn Nelson, County Supervisor representing the Fourth District, is BOS Staffer Jesus Nodarse. Also in the photo is Supervising Park Ranger Kevin McKeown, OC Parks Trail Coordinator Rory Paster, Steve Larson from SHARE, and some of the kids participating in the event.

Supervisor Honors Fallen OC Firefighters
In solemn services and tear-filled eyes, family members and Firefighters joined together this week to honor the fallen heroes who lost their lives defending the residents of Orange County.

Hosted in front of the Firefighters memorial statue in the Civic Center, the names of each of the fallen Firefighters were read by their respective agencies Chief.

Family members, wives and widows, some joined by their children, delivered a single rose that was laid at the base of the statue in memory of the heroic sacrifices each gave as they lost their lives performing in rescues, crashes, explosions and fully-involved fires at residences and commercial buildings.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak attended on behalf of Supervisor Nelson to thank the family members, and Anaheim Fire Chief Randy Bruegman and Fullerton Chief Wolfgang Knabe who attended the memorial to honor Firefighters their departments lost.

A single rose from the memorial service is displayed in Supervisor’s office as a reminder to visitors of the ultimate sacrifices Firefighters give protecting us.
