County “myOCgov” Mobile App
The County of Orange recently launched a mobile app called “myOCgov,” a free interactive tool that makes information about County services easily accessible to community members on their mobile devices.

The new app, available online through the Apple iPhone “App Store” and through Android Google Play, gives users the ability to browse and search all County services near them or learn more about services in categories such as “Libraries,” “Parks,” “Health & Human Services,” “Public Safety” and “Other Government Services.”br />
The County of Orange offers many public services to make the County a safe, healthy and fulfilling place to live, work and play. This app gives users greater visibility to County of Orange services, particularly services close to an app user’s location.br />
The “myOCgov” app can be used in ways such as the following:br />
  • Real estate agents can show clients the closest parks, libraries and other services available to a location.
  • Job-seekers can locate the closest one-stop center to search for jobs.
  • Entrepreneurs can easily get directions to file their fictitious name statements and register a “Doing Business As” (DBA) name.
  • Health and social services can be easily located by proximity to the user’s location.
  • Families can quickly locate the closest County park.
To download the app, visit http://apple.co/2llLgi9 for Apple devices and http://bit.ly/2lpzSOf for Android devices. For more information about the app, please contact CEO Communications at ceocom@ocgov.com.

Design Your Own Transit System

We all have opinions about what elements should go into a transit system. Should there be more late night and early morning service? What type of transit would be best – buses, express buses, or streetcar? What about offering on-demand services in certain areas? And can all these services be offered within budget limitations?

These are just a few of the considerations in the Build Your Own System survey, a fast, fun way to design your own transit system by selecting from various features that could enhance transit in Orange County. As you develop your transit system, you can see the benefits – such as enhanced ridership, travel time, accessibility, or passenger experience – change in real-time. To stay within budget, you’ll need to make tradeoffs in choosing features and priorities.

Spend just a few minutes designing your perfect transit world and help OCTA shape the future of transit. The information you submit will be used to develop the OC Transit Vision, which will take a high-level look at long-term transit needs throughout the County as well as important connections to transit projects from other local transit agencies. The OC Transit Vision also will identify a series of corridors that could lead to smoother, more efficient journeys on public transportation options like bus rapid transit and fixed-guideway alternatives such as streetcars. Learn more about the OC Transit Vision here.

Take the survey now.

Improvements to the Costa Mesa Freeway Are Coming

If you live in the Fourth District and regularly commute on the Costa Mesa SR-55 Freeway, you know that it is one of the most heavily congested freeways in Southern California. To mitigate this congestion, OCTA is partnering with Caltrans in a plan to widen it. The agencies are evaluating options for improving SR-55 in both directions between Interstate 405 and Interstate 5, through the cities of Santa Ana, Irvine and Tustin.

The project is in the environmental phase, and the original Draft Environmental Document was made available to the public in November 2015. As a result of comments received during the public circulation of the Draft Environmental Document, an additional alternative was included for study – Alternative 3 Modified. Alternative 3M includes new carpool, general-purpose and auxiliary lanes in each direction.

A supplemental Draft Environmental Document focusing on the analysis of Alternative 3M was prepared and made available in April for public comment. The comment period has closed; however, the original and supplemental Draft Environmental Documents are available here.

Once a preferred alternative is approved, the project will move into the design phase, which is expected to begin as early as 2018. Construction could begin in 2021 and is expected to take approximately four years. Find out more about the project and sign up for email alerts here.

Youth Summer Pass Returns
OCTA’s Youth Summer Pass will be back this summer for youth ages 6 to 18. Popular among kids and their parents, the pass will be available in June for the unbeatable price of only $20 for 30 days of unlimited rides on OC Bus.

To identify destinations appealing to young riders, OCTA turned to its Teen Council, a group of high school students who engage in transportation-related discussions and projects with OCTA staff and their peers. Their selections, including Knott’s Berry Farm, The Outlets at Orange, and Huntington Beach, are highlighted along with their corresponding bus routes on the Youth Summer Pass webpage.

New this year is a photo contest that encourages pass holders to snap, share and win by taking a selfie with a special decal onboard select OC Buses. Weekly prizes include gift cards and tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm.

Also, beginning June 1 OCTA will offer the Youth Summer Pass on the OC Bus mobile app. OCTA is one of the first transportation agencies in the country to offer specialty passes via a convenient mobile app that allows riders to make purchases on their smartphones. To download the OC Bus mobile app and learn more about the Youth Summer Pass, visit here.

Celebrating WAND 2017

Policy Advisors Steve Spernak and Natalie Wieckert work the Supervisor’s public info and outreach booth

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak (lower left) joined Deputy Chief of Staff Mark Lopez (upper left) in supporting Western High School Football at WAND BBQ.

Special thanks to Esther Wallace and Co-chairs Ryan Balius and Lisa Schavey for delivering sunshine, a mild breeze and a new location for the 21st WAND Western BBQ and family fun festival last weekend.

The new layout of booths, auto show, ponies, concerts, BBQ pits and animal show was a great change for attending families who could park, walk in with strollers or wheel-chairs and enjoy all the vendors and booths…on level ground.

The new site is within 150 feet of bathrooms and handicap parking and since the layout is in a semi-circle you can see the entire festival from wherever you stood.

At the Shawn Nelson booth, Policy Advisor Steve Spernak was joined for the day by staffers Natalie Wieckert, Mark Lopez, Markell Quinn and Jesus Nodarse in handing out brochures on Veterans Services, county accomplishments, homeless updates, jobs, and senior benefits.

Sally Feldhaus joined the Nelson team handing out Flag Day celebration invites for the coming fun on June 11th from 1 to 4 pm at the Pearson Park rally located at Harbor Blvd and Lemon Street. For info on this event go to www.anaheimflagday.com.

Supervisor Nelson delivered commendations to the Team Mom at the Western HS booth to honor 9 superior athletes who were selected All-League or team MVP, Best Lineman etc. Photos with the team are always a fun event for Lopez and Spernak who rally teenagers for the traditional photo then eat their way through the BBQ chicken and veggie bowls made by the players.

For more info on how you can participate or be a sponsor at WAND please contact Ryan Balius at Ryan@Balius.net or call (714) 609-8070.

La Habra Citrus Festival Fun

Policy Advisors Steve Spernak and George Cardenas joined Executive Aide Jim Francis at the Supervisor’s Citrus Fair info booth

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak helped support the La Habra Lions and Miss La Habra pageant with raffle tickets for a 1965 Ford Mustang

Congratulations to the La Habra Chamber of Commerce for their delivery of the 2017 Citrus Festival and outsmarting the wind and rain challenges that whipped through the city.

With winds hitting 30 to 40 knots, the challenges of canopies and tarps covering the booths and exhibits was a real test on Saturday, but that all went away when planners moved everything inside the brand new City Hall.

This year’s event featured school exhibits from the La Habra School District which were absolutely amazing in design and detail along with the FFA exhibits from Sonora and La Habra High School.

The exhibits included pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits and cows that were raised as educational projects by the students and put on display much to the amazement of kids and parents.

And in a first this year, the fair invited hand-built robots to compete and do war-games on the south side City Hall parking lot. Built by local students, it was amazing and fun to watch machines and human brains challenge each other on the asphalt arena.

Sincere thanks again to Sandy Baltes and Carrie Surich and her volunteers along with Mark Sturdevant who moved the Supervisor’s canopy with the help of Victor Laveaga to City Hall on Saturday.

See you all again at this summer’s Corn Festival 2017.

Grace Community Service Honored

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivers commendations to Angie Chang from Supervisor Nelson

Supervisor Nelson was honored to deliver his thanks and appreciation to the staff and donors of the Grace Community Service at their 3rd annual evening gala at Los Coyotes Country Club last week.

Fullerton Soroptimists Honor Their Heroes for 2017

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak joined Fullerton Mayor Bruce Whitaker

Congratulations to the Fullerton Soroptimist for their selection of three incredible young women who were chosen as scholarship honorees at this years “Live Your Dreams’ awards luncheon.

Hosted at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Fullerton, the 30 women from the association gathered to hear the amazing stories of three women who turned devastated lives into opportunity and transformation.

This year’s top honoree was Jacqueline Garcia who raises her baby boy, takes care of her mom and disabled sister while working and attending CSUF. Hoping to get her degree in Human Services she will use here lifetime hardships to teach others how to overcome adversity and rebuild their lives.

Catarina Young also garnered scholarship support to help raise her eight year old son and complete an 18 months stay in a residential community program. Overcoming her mom’s drug addiction she had to raise her siblings in motels and missed school to work to survive. She is now at Fullerton College and securing an AA in Human Service so, ‘I can be a case manager and help women who have suffered the same experiences.” explained Ms. Young.

Taste of Anaheim 2017

Policy Advisor delivered thanks to corporate and community supporters for Supervisor Nelson.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak joined 13th MEU Adoption-Support committee team at Taste of Anaheim booth

Congratulations to Heather Sievers and her team at the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce for putting together another fantastic night of food and fun at the annual Taste of Anaheim 2017.

Hosted at the Gardenwalk on Katella Avenue, the upper deck is converted to a food court with 40 different restaurants and food-prep centers where visitors who paid for the fun and a wrist-band ate their way through thousands of calories from 5 to 10 pm.

The Chamber of Commerce puts together a super array of sponsorship opportunities so new and legacy restaurants can put their flavors out for tasting and sipping.

The typical audience of 3,000 people enjoy samples from restaurants like Dave and Busters, Red Robin, Rain Forest Café, Bubba Gump, Applebee’s, Roscoes, PF Chang and Slaters 50/50…then go onto the lower decks for Noble Ale and other classic selections in local brew work that are part of Anaheim’s 9 beer and ale breweries.

Congrats were also delivered to the 13th MEU Adoption team who had a booth to raise money for Camp Pendleton Marines programs and promote their Semper 5k run this May 20th in Anaheim Hills.

For more information of how your restaurant or company can be part of this amazing night of fun please go to www.tasteofanaheim or call Heather Sievers at (714) 758-0222.
