County Updates
Clark Park Fields Update
There have been exciting developments at Clark Park Fields in Buena Park since the beginning of summer. After nearly a year of updating the facilities and refurbishing the amenities at the park, the two fields bordering the baseball/softball fields are being repurposed to multi-purpose fields to accommodate youth football, soccer and rugby. Clark Fields is being redesigned as a multi-sport complex. The redesign spearheaded by Supervisor Nelson was undertaken in response to the growing demand for multi-purpose fields in the community.

Over the next several weeks, the county will be re-grading both fields, adding soil and new sod in preparation for the upcoming sports season. It is anticipated opening day at The Fields will be Labor Day weekend. Supervisor Nelson is also proud to report that The Fields are expected to be the new home for the Fullerton Junior All-American Football and Cheer. The program is thrilled to have a new home field and be the first to use the “new” facilities.

If you are a part of a sports program and are interested in using the fields for your team, the County and City of Fullerton have entered into an agreement wherein the City will be programming the use of the fields as part of the areas parks network to make it available to the larger community. Please contact Fullerton Parks and Recreation at 714-738-6575 for additional information.

OC WASTE & RECYCLING OFFERS RESIDENTS A DIFFERENT KIND OF DRIVE-THRU FOR NATIONAL DRIVE-THRU DAY

Got fries with that battery bucket? OC residents might be tempted to ask that question if they visit one of the County’s free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers on Saturday, July 22. Although the official day falls on a Monday, OCWR is celebrating early as a convenience to residents. Residents can drive through any of the County’s four free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers to drop off materials and score some free swag.

OC Waste & Recycling is putting a twist on National Drive Thru Day, using the celebratory day to help increase awareness about bringing household hazardous waste to the proper place and making sure it stays out of landfills.

Customers may drop off materials at a center between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 22 and receive a Discovery Cube OC free child admission coupon and a battery bucket – while supplies last.

Click here to find out where centers are located and what materials to bring. Then just drop it off drive-thru style – without having to exit your vehicle.

OC Fair Express Returns on July 15
Riders can catch the non-stop service from nine OC locations through Aug. 13

The OC Fair Express Bus service returns July 15 to provide convenient non-stop travel to the OC Fair on weekends.

The express bus service will provide service from nine locations to the OC Fair from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays, from July 15 to Aug. 13.

Four of the pickup locations connect directly from Metrolink passenger rail stations. Riders can use their valid Metrolink passes from connecting trains to ride the OC Fair Express for free.

Regular bus fare is $4 round-trip and riders will receive a coupon for $3 admission to the OC Fair – a savings of up to $9 off the regular ticket price. Riders ages 60 and over and those with disabilities ride for just 75 cents each way, and children 5 years and younger ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult. Metrolink transfers also receive the $3 fair admission coupon.

Riders can also download the free OC Bus app to their mobile device to easily buy electronic tickets in advance and to check bus routes and schedules.

The OC Fair Express allows riders to avoid traffic and parking hassles, and passengers are dropped off at the Yellow Gate just feet from the entrance to the OC Fair.

Locations where riders can catch the OC Fair Express include:
  • Anaheim: Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (Metrolink), 2626 E. Katella Ave.
  • Anaheim Canyon: Anaheim Canyon Metrolink Station, 1039 N. Pacificenter Drive
  • Fullerton: Fullerton Park-and-Ride, 3000 W. Orangethorpe Ave.
  • Huntington Beach: Goldenwest Transportation Center, 7301 Center Ave.
  • Irvine: Irvine Metrolink Station, 15215 Barranca Parkway
  • Laguna Hills: Laguna Hills Transportation Center, 24282 Calle de los Caballeros

  • San Juan Capistrano: Junipero Serra Park-and-Ride, I-5 Freeway and Junipero Serra Road.
The special bus service offered by the Orange County Transportation Authority had nearly 95,000 total boardings during the five-week fair season last year, a 20 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The OC Fair Express bus service has been transporting passengers directly to the OC Fair every year since 2011.

The OC Fair Express is funded in part by a grant from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee. The committee provides subsidies for cleaner transportation alternatives.

Fourth of July Parade – Anaheim
The day starts early at the annual Fireworks 5k at Canyons High School where hundreds of runners and walkers enjoy the morning fun running the annual 5K and campus track to kick-off the 4th of July.

The Anaheim Hills Firecracker 5k/10k/Run-Walk began just after 7 a.m to start the day’s activities behind the work, staff and planning of Anaheim Chamber Director Heather Sievers.

Delicious pancake breakfasts are served by kids and coaches from Canyon High School under a huge canopy and after a few cups of hot coffee visitors stay to enjoy the kids run and Yankee Doodle Dog Show.

The parade and participants staged in the upper lot at Canyon HS at noon with a 1 p.m. step-off for bands, civic groups, Miss Anaheim and her court, Boy Scouts carrying a huge flag and self-made floats of flags and Americana.

Supervisor Nelson was joined by his son, Shane and wife, Sharon, in the parade and enjoyed the patriotic music and waves of hundreds of Anaheim residents lined along Santa Ana Canyon Blvd. Congratulations to the City of Anaheim staffers and community events crews who partnered with the Police and Fire Departments to make this a fun and fantastic celebration of America’s birthday and celebrating 241 years of freedom!

La Colonia Community Cleanup
Supervisor Nelson was proud to attend his 7th annual partnership with the OC Public Works and Waste and Reclamation Division and Goodwill crews who again performed a logistical magic act in their annual La Colonia Community Cleanup program in West Anaheim.

Months in the planning and timed-delivery of huge, 40 ft dumpsters that arrived at 6 a.m., the teams followed the playbook of Terry Cox, Isabelle Rios-Khan and on-site director Chris Casillas to perfection.

Add the arrival and deployment of 24 student-leaders from the Bolsa Grande ASB and Men’s League under the direction of Rob Engel at the Anaheim Independencia Center on Garza Street and the day begins.

In less than one hour, residents of West Anaheim drove, carried or dragged debris, bbq’s, basketball hoops, mattresses and tons of waste to the dumpsters where Bolsa Grande kids helped stack the bins to the rims. By 9 a.m., calls were made for more dumpsters which we again filled by 11 a.m.

Thanks to Center Director Rosa Renteria who secured a neighbors bbq and propane, Mark Lopez and Steve Spernak were able to bbq 100 hotdogs and bratwurst specials that Spernak is famous for packing with sauerkraut and grilled onions.

Supervisor Nelson extends his sincere thanks and appreciation to the following County staff and community volunteers who worked in 98 degree temps to get La Colonia 2017 to Mission Accomplished!

Fiftieth Anniversary Honors for Delta Chi CSUF
On June 17th, 1967, members of a local chapter at Cal State Fullerton accepted the honor of becoming a national affiliate of Delta Chi fraternity where they went on to become one of the premier men’s organizations for academics and community service at CSUF.

This year, the anniversary of their 50th oath to their founding principles and Founding Fathers will be celebrated by over 350 members, alumni and family members at the Phoenix House in Anaheim.

The fraternity, located just north of CSUF on Associated Road, has their Greek letters in red and black painted proudly for new members, alums and little sisters to treasure and enjoy the brotherhood that has been a landmark since 1967.

Special congratulations to Alumni Richard Nadel and Dan De La Hunt who put in a full year’s worth of planning and logistics to get invites out, news to National, dinner and program honorees seated and all the financing involved with hosting almost 400 attending ceremonies this Saturday.

Presentations and congratulations were delivered by Staff Aid Jim Francis and Policy Advisor Steve Spernak, an SAE member who lived adjacent to Delta Chi while attending CSUF in 1975.

Sincere best wishes and blessings to Delta Chi on your 50th anniversary!

Staff Aid Jim Francis presents Delta Chi Alum Dan De La Hunt with the Supervisor’s congratulations honoring 50 years at Cal State Fullerton.
