County Updates
Clark Park Opening Day
This upcoming Labor Day weekend will mark the completion of the renovation of Clark Fields at Clark Regional Park in Fullerton. The renovation has been among the priority projects Supervisor Nelson spearheaded this year to create more playing fields for youth sports in the County park system. With the completion of the renovations, the Fourth District Office is further pleased to announce that the Fullerton Bears Junior All American Football & Cheer will call the “The Yard” (as the fields are also known) their home field for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

For more than a year OC Parks has been working to refurbish all the facilities at the park. The work included a complete renovation of the restroom facilities, concessionaire, picnic area and fields. As for the fields, the county transformed three underutilized baseball diamonds into two large multi-purpose fields suitable for other sports. With new turf, irrigation and lighting improvements, the park offers much needed recreational space in north Orange County. Clark Fields has been redesigned as a multi-sport complex.

As the Bears’ season gets underway Supervisor Nelson wants to wish the players, parents and coaches a great year in their new home! Go Bears!

$3.1 Million Awarded to Improve O.C. Water Quality
Sixteen cities received funding to improve water quality through OCTA’s Measure M

The Orange County Transportation Authority board allocated more than $3.1 million to improve water quality in Orange County.

The funds come from Measure M, a half-cent sales tax approved by Orange County voters in 2006 for transportation improvements. The ballot measure includes funding for an environmental cleanup program that awards money on a competitive basis to cities and the county for projects that reduce the impacts of water pollution related to transportation.

Protecting the county’s natural resources, while at the same time improving the transportation network, is a key promise made to voters in Measure M.

After reviewing 24 applications from 21 cities, the OCTA board approved making $3.1 million available for 16 projects focused on removing visible pollutants, such as litter and debris, from roads before they reach waterways. These projects include purchasing or upgrading screens, filters and inserts for catch basins, as well as other devices designed to remove pollutants.

The following cities received funding: Aliso Viejo, Anaheim, Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Cypress, Irvine, La Habra, Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Orange, Placentia, Tustin, Villa Park and Yorba Linda.

The OCTA board has approved funding for 138 projects since the inception of this program in 2011, totaling approximately $17 million. It is estimated that more than 1 million cubic feet of trash has since been captured as a result of the installation of these devices.

Bridges at Kraemer Place
On August 17, Supervisor Nelson, Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, Larry Haynes with Mercy House and Susan Price, the Director of Care Coordinator, toured Bridges at Kraemer Place. Mercy House is the operator of this county owned facility and their goal is to house each individual as efficiently as possible, working with them from the moment they walk-in to develop a housing plan. Currently, Bridges is operating at capacity with 100 homeless individuals, and once the second phase of construction is complete the facility will be able to house 200 people. 14 clients have already been moved into housing since the start of the program and 17 more have been matched with housing programs. This facility will serve North Orange County well and provides a place for individuals to transition out of homelessness.

OC Animal Care Hosts Successful Clear the Shelters Event

113 Animals Find Homes
The County of Orange’s Animal Care shelter had incredible success during the Clear the Shelters event on Saturday August 19, 2017, finding homes for 113 animals. The adoptions, which were $17 to the public (plus licensing fee, where applicable), were generously sponsored by Supervisor Shawn Nelson, Fourth District.

During this year’s Clear the Shelters event, OC Animal Care adopted 79 dogs, 24 cats, four tortoises, two rabbits, two guinea pigs and one duck. In addition, one cat was transferred to a rescue group, bringing the total animals released to 113.

The Clear the Shelters event is part of a nationwide campaign by NBC4 Southern California / KNBC and Telemundo 52 Los Angeles / KVEA to raise awareness about the benefits of pet adoption and aims to reduce the animal overpopulation at local shelters. During the month-long campaign, the stations will cover news stories to spotlight the issue, including the importance of spaying/neutering, the benefits of micro-chipping, and helping families find the right pet for their homes.

OC Animal Care is an open admission shelter and took in more than 22,000 lost or owner-surrendered pets last year. OC Animal Care strives to save the lives of all healthy, treatable and manageable animals in our community. To reach that goal, the shelter hosts monthly adoption events and promotes animals online in addition to working closely with nonprofit rescue adoption partners, other local animal shelters and volunteer foster caretakers.
