Did you know that research shows performing simple acts of kindness is actually good for YOUR mental health?

Follow the OC Health Care Agency on Facebook and Twitter during the month of May as we celebrate Mental Health Matters Month by shining the spotlight on simple behaviors our community members can implement in their everyday lives that will positively lift the spirits of friends, loved ones, and neighbors while simultaneously improving their own mental health and wellbeing. Show your support by sharing kindness on social media by using the hashtag (#UpliftOC)!

Every day, millions of people face stigma related to mental health and go years before receiving any help. Our goal is to amplify the voices of everyone who wants to put an end to stigma and show our support to help make a difference in someone’s life.

“Morning of Miracles” Celebrated at Donate Life

Supervisor Nelson’s son, Shane, and wife, Sharon, supporting Donate Life at CSUF

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak with legendary Angel Rod Carew.

Donate Life 2017 at Cal State Fullerton was truly a ‘morning of miracles’ as twenty thousand friends and family members of organ and tissue donors met with recipients, surgeons, DMV and VIP to celebrate the lives of donors and the magic of this amazing project.

Hosted by the Hostert family, this Saturday was the 15th year of promoting their life-saving crusade of education and registering donors statewide to help preserve the lives of people in real crisis who need organs to survive in life.

Through the tears and 40 mph winds, the real angels from the Konrad Reuland family met on stage with former California Angel Rod Carew to tell the huge audience the story of how their 29-year-old son, Konrad, passed away with a brain aneurysm. The former pro-football player and OC homeland hero had met Carew when he was 11 years old and before his passing, told his mom that he would sign up to be a donor on his driver’s license renewal.

In an astonishing confluence of timing, luck and providence, Rod Carew at age 71, had suffered a heart attack and was not long for this world on specializes heart management when he got the call that a transplant was available to save his life.

The only info Carew got on the donor was “male, late 20’s, local, exceptionally healthy.” Their blood types matched and both were immune from Hepatitis B.

The ‘match in heaven’ led to a surgery that delivered Konrad’s heart into the chest of Carew. Reuland’s parents, Ralf and Mary, listened by stethoscope to their son’s heart in Carew’s chest to the amazement of the Reulands and Rhonda Carew, who owes the life of her husband to a miracle named Konrad Reuland.

At the morning’s opening ceremonies, the Carews hugged the Reulands and after doves were released the thousands of walkers and runners swept through CSUF to pay thanks for a “morning of miracles.” Policy Advisor Steve Spernak hugged his childhood hero in Rod Carew and told him, “Rod, you are the luckiest man here today.” Carew replied, “I know. I don’t have the words to describe it.”

To join OneLegacy for the Donate Life project, please call Erika Ospina Aswad at (714) 453-3292 or email Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com in the office of OC Supervisor Shawn Nelson.

Reborn Café Brea Grand Opening

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak joins Mayor Hupp and Chamber CEO Heidi Gallegos with VIP at Grand Opening of Reborn Café

Brea just keeps getting better!

With 50 friends, supporters, City Council and staff attending the Brea Chamber of Commerce rolled out another fantastic member with their ribbon-cutting at the new Reborn Café of La Florista.

Located in the Whole Foods complex on Imperial Ave, just east of Valencia, the new café is ideal for starting the morning with a fresh cup of coffee or ending the night with friends on the outdoor padded benches and fireplace.

The varieties and choices of product are amazing with nitro cold brews, green plum, pomegranate, kale and lemon grass juices, poppy seed bagels with blueberry cream cheese, soft serve ice cream and the list goes on. The ribbon cutting was led by Mayor Cecilia Hupp and all the new owners and friends of Reborn who took the very best concepts of other stores and products, put it on paper and then built it to specs for maximum comfort, taste and access.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivered congratulations to the City Manager Bill Gallardo and his team of planners and techs who joined Chamber President John Koos and CEO Heidi Gallegos for putting another enterprise in the city that adds jobs, income and quality of life flavors that make Brea such a premier city to live, shop and play in!

Brea’s New Berkley’s BBQ Bowls and Hot Dogs

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak enjoys a custom-made Berkley’s hotdog in Brea!

Seventeen years of experience in the BBQ catering business and delivering fantastic food with a personality of fun and optimism came together this week when Berkley Hoagland opened his first Berkley’s BBQ in Brea. Located at 580 S. Brea Blvd., Berkley’s is a fun and eclectic center for people who want to create their own hotdogs by choosing toppings in the display.

Same for people who want to design their own personalized BBQ bowls with 8 different toppings and select BBQ sauces to create a fun lunch or late-night memory after a night on the town.

After the ribbon-cutting this week with the Brea Chamber of Commerce, Policy Advisor Steve Spernak sampled the magic of building his own custom hotdog to savor on the patio.

The foot-long dogs are grilled, placed in a bun and the canvas was made for the Spernak design-concept of steamed onions and sliced peppers, followed by shredded pastrami, adding a topping of fresh chili, scoops of tomatoes and chilled onion, then a dash of sweet BBQ sauce. Add the chips and coke and it’s a County employee’s dream lunch in Brea.

Berkley will begin advertising and marketing with the Chamber, do outreach to fundraising organizations and talk to schools and sports teams who like the convenience of fresh food and catered BBQ brought to games, sports parks, parties or family events.

For more information on having Berkley’s cater your events or just stopping by to create a monster hotdog for lunch, call him at (714) 798-7233 or email him at contact@berkleysbbqbowlsndogs.com.

Buena Park City Clerk Retires

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak presents Lifetime Achievement Award to City Clerk Shalice Tilton.

Congratulations and hugs of appreciation were everywhere this past week as the Mayor and Council members joined with City staff to deliver thanks and best wishes as City Clerk Shalice Tilton retires after a quarter century of service in Buena Park.

Beginning her legacy in 1992 in Recreation and Parks then as Department Secretary where promotions and training led her to Deputy and then a City Clerk appointment in 1997, Tilton was an inspiration of hard work and professional performance for two and half decades to the residents of Buena Park.

The City Clerk job is hugely demanding with deadlines, revises, presentations, financial and legal challenges and delivering printed and published government workings to meet Brown Act regulations and excellence in truth and factual mandates to the public.

Tilton did it with class and confidence, so much so she received the Master Municipal Clerk credential in 2007 and did 9 years of service on the Executive Board of City Clerks Association of California, serving as President in 2006 as well as work on the State League of California Cities Board of Directors.

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivered the Supervisor’s Lifetime Achievement Proclamation and spoke of how Tilton and her staff worked at the ‘speed of trust’ with Supervisor Nelson’s team and that she was always the consummate professional.

Spernak closed by getting approval from the Mayor and City Manager Jim Vanderpool to have a replica of Tilton’s retirement proclamation posted inside the walls of the City Council chambers so generations of employees and residents can always appreciate her 25 years of professionalism, performance and the delivery of municipal management in the highest traditions of public service.

Celebrating Military Children’s Month

Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivers commendations to the planners of Military Children Celebrations at Los Alamitos

Supervisor Nelson was honored to partner with the Military Children’s Collaborative Group and the OC Veterans and Military Families Collaborative (OCVMFC) in hosting the 3rd annual Month of the Military Child Ceremony and Celebrations.

Some 300 military parents and their children attended the ceremonies and celebrations of the contributions kids of military give America having their parents working in the Armed Forces, Reserves, National Guard or Veterans retired.

The project to honor military kids came from MCCG Founder and CEO Debbie Nicols. Nicols became an instant-parent again when her family member in the military had to deploy overseas leaving a youngster in her care.

The new responsibility and challenges of parenting again…along with the trials of emotions, fear, frustrations, depression and academics were a menu of issues Nicols never had in her life before. Nicols realized that 14,000 military kids in OC and other ‘instant-parents’ could use her leadership and inspiration along with real-life solutions to help the kids till dad or mom got back from Iraq or ship-duty overseas or on extended deployments.

That effort rose the project and services of Nicols and the remarkable patriotic women Supervisor Nelson honored at the awards dinner. Policy Advisor Steve Spernak delivered commendations for outstanding service to the families and children of military in OC to Debbie Nicols, Lori Pack, Antoinette Balta, Larisa Owen, Mitzi Huff and Kim Hagner, military families Director at Los Alamitos Joint Training Base.

Nicols will next work on meeting with teachers, school boards and OC Board of Education Director Al Mijares to introduce the program to “educate educators” about the trials of military kids and keeping them centered, focused on academics and socially active with peers, sports and community.

For more information on military kids programs to support these ‘silent heroes’ please call Nicols at (714) 536-6184 or go to www.mccgroup.org or email her at Debbie@mccgroup.org or Larisa Owen of OCVMFC Children and Families Working Group at Lowen@cffutures.org.
