Heroes Hall

Heroes Hall, OC Fair & Event Center's veterans museum and education center, opened a new exhibit, Bravemind, for a public preview on Wednesday.

Bravemind is a virtual reality experience created by USC's Institute for Creative Technologies to enhance established therapeutic techniques to treat post-traumatic stress. The immersive tool is also used for resilience training for soldiers before they are deployed.

Guests can get a free preview of the new exhibit from June 28 through July 1. It will open again July 13 and and visitors to the 2018 OC Fair will be able to see Bravemind in addition to The SAAAB Story exhibit, which chronicles the history of the Santa Ana Army Air Base. The OC Fair runs July 13 through Aug. 12.

At Heroes Hall, the Bravemind exhibit will include VR segments allowing visitors to see firsthand how the technology works, as well as several videos and informational displays about the technology and those it has helped.

Guests can use specialty goggles to view a two-and-a-half-minute virtual reality segment on the first floor of Heroes Hall. Visitors will enter the virtual world of war and see the type of scenes typically used to help veterans. The content is recommended for those 13 years and older.

Summer Concert Series for Family Fun
Congratulations to the OC Parks team and all the behind the scenes crews that made the Summer Concert Series another magical night of family fun and music.

Hosted at Craig Park in Fullerton, some 2,000 concert-goers laid out blankets, beach chairs and lunch baskets at the 5 pm opening to ready for the 5:45 pm concert start on the hillside located at the entrance to the park.

The featured concert by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy remains a classic crowd-pleasing show with their 1950’s collection of horns, bass players and vocals that had 150 people dancing in the area in front of the stage. Many wore vintage 1950’s clothing and dresses with hairstyles and top-hats to make the night a free concert of smiles and laughs.

Supervisor Nelson, joined by his wife Sharon and staffers Steve Spernak with Deputy Chief of Staff Mark Lopez worked the outreach booth and delivered County info on services, Veterans guides and info on coyote safety. The free pens, sunscreen and hand sanitizers were a hit and gone by the end of the night.

For more information on the coming concerts, go to ocparks.com

Next free concerts include Stone Soul, July 5th at Mason Park, Irvine along with Flashback Heart Attack on July 12th. Each concert is free, runs from 5 to 8 pm and rolls out each Thursday thru August 23rd at parks throughout OC.

For more family fun, be sure to check out the Sunset Cinema Series shown in OC parks thru Sept. Free family movie nights are Fridays and Saturdays and include hits like “ The Jungle Book”, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “ Jaws” and “Ghostbusters’…all classic fun for the whole family !!

Supervisor Teams with World Elder Abuse Awareness Forum
Congratulations to Linda Armas and Karyl Dupree for another outstanding morning of instructions, crimes prevention and financial safety tips to ‘harden the target’ as part of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Their event takes a year to plan and organize to deliver the very best instructors and nationally acclaimed specialists who tutored some 300 seniors, caregivers and families at the Buena Park Senior Center conference center at Heritage Hall.

After welcoming addresses and introductions by Susan Papiri, Senior Director of Community Relations at SeniorServ, the program moved quickly to the ‘fighting fraud’ segment by Buena Park Detectives Mark Morison and Charlotte Syphax.

The mornings keynote speaker was OC Judge and elder advocate Kim Hubbard who talked about the issues and challenges of protecting seniors in the cyber world of the 21st century.

The afternoon session featured Julie Schoen, Deputy Director of the National Center on Elder Abuse, who lectured on the ‘Road to Elder Justice”.

The final action was a photo session with all the attending staff and seniors, a tradition established by Supervisor Nelson and staff member Steve Spernak. The photo is sent out world-wide to show OC support for training seniors not to be victims of financial fraud and a message to criminals not to try to thieve OC seniors. For more information on how you or your company can partner to protect the elderly please contact the office of OC Supervisor at Steve.Spernak@ocgov.com

Tribute for Retiring Servite Principal Pete Bowen
Congratulations and hugs abounded at last week’s retirement celebration for Servite Principal Pete Bowen as hundreds bid him farewell at the campus theatre.

Bowen was honored with a Lifetime Achievement in Education proclamation by Supervisor Nelson for his work as a Marine Corps Harrier Pilot and Instructor for 11 years and his service to America as a Marine Corps Reservist for 24 years.

Pete received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and went on to secure his M.A. from Duke University with studies focused on ethics, philosophy, intellectual history and culture.

Selected to lead Servite as its Principal in 2004, Pete transformed the Marine Corps motto of Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful) into his mission mantra at Servite. He designed the unique Formation and Priory Leadership programs, the Capitol Campaign to build new facilities by raising $14 million dollars and recruited the first Board of Directors to oversee endowments and Legacy Giving Programs.

Speaking on behalf of Supervisor Nelson, Policy Advisor Steve Spernak talked about the legacy element, leadership from the front, and how Pete’s guiding spirit inspired generations of coaches, students and alumni. Two proclamations were presented by Spernak at the awards night. One for Bowen and one for the lobby at the entrance to the Administration office.

Spernak, who also hails from a Marine Corps family, then presented Bowen with a Marine Corps “Served with Pride” flag to proudly display at his residence as a final parting memory for his service to America and Marine Corps leadership mission he delivered to hundreds of Servite students as Principal.

Best wishes and God Bless Always Pete Bowen, his wife and daughters, for all they have given and sacrificed for America and Orange County !
