What's Happening
Governor Gavin Newsom Signs OC Veterans Cemetery Bill & Hosts HOPE Center Press Conference

It was a great honor to join Governor Gavin Newsom and other elected officials on his visit to Orange County today.

During the morning, I attended Governor Newsom signing of Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva and Assemblymember Steven Choi's AB 1595 at Cypress College, which allows CalVet to acquire, study, design, develop, construct, and equip a state-owned and state-operated Southern California Veterans Cemetery in Orange County.

We commend Assemblymember Quirk-Silva, Senator Umberg, the State legislators who supported AB-1595, Nick Berardino, and the members of the Veterans Alliance of Orange County (VALOR) who have worked tirelessly to make the Orange County Veterans Cemetery at Gypsum Canyon a reality!

In the afternoon, I attended Governor Newsom's press conference and ribbon-cutting of the HOPE Center in north Fullerton, along with Assemblymember Quirk-Silva, Senator Umberg, Senator Josh Newman, Fullerton Police Chief Robert Dunn, Mayor Fred Jung, and Theresa, an inspirational woman who shared her experience of homelessness.

The Homeless Outreach and Proactive Engagement (HOPE) Center, led by the North Orange County Public Safety Collaborative, is a dispatch center that brings together law enforcement, social service workers, mental health professionals, and more than 40 community-based organizations. These partners will collaborate on a regional-basis to serve and meet the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in an unprecedented and deliberate way.

I am grateful that my Supervisor colleagues unanimously approved my initiative to provide $500,000 in County funding towards the HOPE Center. And we all look forward to the HOPE Center becoming a model for addressing homelessness in the State and throughout the nation.

Thanksgiving Turkey Drive

Come join us for our Fourth Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway and Resource Fair in the 4th District in partnership with Senator Josh Newman and United Across Borders Foundation on Sunday, November 20 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Stanton Park located at 7800 Katella Ave., Stanton, CA 90680.

To help families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday, we'll be giving away one $25 food voucher (for meat, bread, or produce at Northgate Market), along with a box of groceries per family on a first-come, first-served basis. Community-based organizations will also be providing resources to residents. Since this is a walk-up event, we recommend attendees bring a cart.

Event Highlights
Fourth District Kids Fishing Derby 🐟
Our Fourth District Kids Fishing Derby at Tri-City Park in Placentia was off the hook! It was great meeting with families from all across North Orange County. Many of them had children who were first-time anglers, and we also met with veteran anglers who attend the Derby every year.

Special thanks goes to Orange County Parks for coordinating the event, the Angler Chronicles and Bite on Fishing for assisting families and kids who fished, and the Orange County Employees Association for serving up free hot dogs to the public!

Anonymous Gun Buyback Program
Our Anonymous Gun Buyback in Placentia was a great success! With the collaboration of District Attorney Todd Spitzer, and the Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra, Orange, and Placentia Police Departments, we collected approximately 400 firearms, including 16 assault rifles, at the drive-up event with “no questions asked.” Participants received Amazon or gas gift cards in exchange for voluntarily turning in their firearm.

The police officers, sheriff deputies, and other law enforcement personnel in Orange County are very adept at what they do to protect our community. We thank them for their service.

And we also thank everyone who participated in the event and for helping to make Orange County safer! Now there are hundreds of fewer guns in our community that could be stolen, used accidentally, or involved in a violent crime.

North Orange County Career Fair
What a fantastic turnout at our North Orange County Career Fair at the Fullerton Community Center! We had hundreds of job seekers and employers participate from all around Orange County. My Policy Advisor, Jessica Guerrero, and I also met with several constituents and recruiters from various business sectors.

We thank Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva and the OC Workforce & Economic Development Division for their partnership and helping to make this event a reality.

Movie in the Park featuring "Hocus Pocus"

Our Movie in the Park event featuring “Hocus Pocus” at Carbon Canyon Regional Park was a great success! Families brought out their chairs and blankets and watched a movie under the stars. The event included free parking and delicious kettle popcorn 🍿.

Silverado Days Festival in Buena Park
We had a fantastic time at the Silverado Days at William Peak Park in Buena Park! This three-day festival is sponsored by the Buena Park Noon Lions Club and features a variety of food, games, arts and crafts, carnival rides, and contests. Also, proceeds from the festival raise thousands of dollars for local charities each year.

County News
Operation Greenlight
Each year we come together as a nation on Veterans Day to honor and celebrate the hundreds of thousands of brave Americans who have served our country in uniform. This year, Orange County is joining counties across the nation in launching Operation Green Light for Veterans, an initiative designed to shine a light on the service of our veterans and their families.

In observance of Operation Green Light for Veterans, the County is illuminating the County Administration North building in the Santa Ana Civic Center green from Nov. 7th - 13th. We also encourage individuals and businesses to join us in supporting veterans by changing one light bulb in the entryway of your house or business to a green bulb. By shining a green light, we let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors will be presenting a resolution for Operation Greenlight to members of our Orange County veteran community during the Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 Board meeting.
