Gun Buybacks Collect 757 Firearms Including 53 Assault Weapons
We successfully collected 337 firearms and 37 assault weapons at our second Anonymous Gun Buyback event in Anaheim, a collaborative effort with Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento and led by the Anaheim Police Department, with the support of other local law enforcement agencies. Following the success of the first Gun Buyback in October 2022 in Placentia, we have been able to collect 757 firearms including 53 assault weapons in total from both events. Thank you to everyone who participated and to all our partners, Brea Police Department, Buena Park Police Department, Fullerton Police Department, La Habra Police Department, Placentia Police Department, OC Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad, and Orange Police Department, for making this event possible. Together, we are building a safer, stronger community. Stay tune for more information about our third gun buyback in 2025. From Left to Right: Council Member Stephen Faessel, Council Member Carlos A. Leon, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Vice Chairman Doug Chaffee, Mayor Ashleigh Aitken, and Supervisor Vicente Sarmiento.

$5 Million Cal Optima Health Grant for Cal State Fullerton Nursing Programs
We held a press conference announcing the approval by the CalOptima Health Board of Directors of a 5 million dollar grant over five years for Cal State Fullerton’s nursing programs. The grant will be used to increase the number of Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in the Jump Start, Concurrent Enrollment and BSN programs. The university plans to award $10,000 stipends to 50 nursing students each year to complete their BSN, a total of 250 students across the five-year program. As Supervisor for Cal State Fullerton and a CalOptima Health Director, I have been working closely with both organizations to help fill the gap to train skilled, diverse and compassionate nurses. This grant will help students to obtain their BSN while increasing the number of students able to enter into the CSUF nursing program. I want to thank CalOptima Health and Cal State Fullerton for their work on this important initiative. With this grant and others we can help expand our healthcare network and support the next generation of healthcare professionals. Photo courtesy of CalOptima Health.

Children and Family Health Fair
We held our annual Children and Family Health Fair at Orangethorpe Elementary school. Attendees were able to receive various resources and services, including health screenings, food, diapers, toys, and sign up for public assistance benefits with a Social Services Agency representative. It was a fun filled event with entertainment from a local folklorico dance group, music, Olympic themed games and a special guest appearance from Wild Wing and Curious George. We send a special shout out to the Orange County Social Services Agency for coordinating a great event, along with our other partners CalOptima Health, Community Action Partnership of Orange County (CAP-OC), and United Across Borders Foundation. We also thank all our attendees for joining us and taking the initiative to improve their individual and family health. Team Chaffee and Curious George at the Children and Families Heath Fair

Arovista Park Groundbreaking Ceremony
I attended the City of Brea’s groundbreaking ceremony for Arovista Park. To help with the design and construction of the park’s modernization, we gave $875,000 of the Fourth District Discretionary Fund for the project. Once completed, Arovista Park will be the first all accessible playground in the city of Brea and in North Orange County. This will provide an opportunity for children and adults of all ages and all abilities to have a safe space to play and enjoy the outdoors. Other amenities included in this phase are four new pickleball courts, upgraded basketball and volleyball courts, new restroom facilities, new outdoor events space, resurfaced parking lot and new EV charging stations, and an upgrade to the Tracks at Brea Trailhead. Thank you to the City of Brea for spearheading this initiative and all the partners involved in this project. I attended the La Habra Annual Donor and Volunteer Reception with Office Ambassador Paulette Chaffee. The event honored individuals and organizations who have donated their time or financial support to the city of La Habra. New Housing Grand Openings in Stanton and Placentia

Stanton's Homekey Grand Openings
This past Wednesday, I attended the grand opening of three permanent supportive housing communities in the City of Stanton. In partnership with the city, Jamboree Housing Corporation and Orange County, a total of 153 affordable apartments, including 20 homes designed for veterans experiencing homelessness were opened. Through California's Department of Housing and Community Development Homekey program, three motel sites were able to be transformed into permanent supportive housing communities. This development addresses the critical need for more high quality affordable housing with supportive services for those most likely to become homeless, or who are already chronically homeless. Santa Angelina Senior Housing Project Opening
Two weeks ago, I attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening for the Santa Angelina senior housing project. The new community development will provide 65 affordable apartment homes to seniors aged 62 or older who earn less than 60% of the area median income. Twenty- one apartment homes will be reserved as permanent supportive housing for unhoused seniors or seniors at-risk of becoming unhoused. The project built by the nonprofit National CORE, is located at the Episcopal Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Placentia. Through the passing of SB4 last year, Affordable Housing on Faith Lands Act, it allows churches throughout California the ability to use their excess property for affordable housing development. Thank you to National CORE for creating a new beautiful housing community for our seniors, the Blessed Sacrament Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles for allowing the use of church property for the project and the Hope Housing Foundation for proving the onsite direct supportive services that will be used. Congratulations to all the parties involved in creating a new senior housing community. Ribbon cutting of the Santa Angelina housing community with stakeholders

Pet of the Week

Hi guys, I'm Leo! I dream of joining the ranks of famous Leos like the painter, actor, and ninja turtle, but what I want most is to be YOUR Leo. At only one year and seven months young, I've been on a journey of self-improvement to become the perfect companion for you! When I arrived at OC Animal Care over four months ago, I was shy and unsure. The new environment made me feel small, and I wasn't ready to show my true self. However, with time, patience, and lots of love, I've blossomed! I'm thrilled to announce that I'm ready for adoption! I've worked hard on trust and self-control, and I'm an excellent sitter, especially when there are treats involved. I'm looking for a pawrent who can give me the affection and love I crave, but also be firm with me when I need guidance. Sometimes, I act like the leader, but the puppy in me still needs someone to say, "Okay, Leo, it's time to go home!" Can you be my forever pawrent and take me home today? Please call OC Animal Care at (714) 935-6848 and mention my Animal ID A1852272. I can't wait to meet you and start our new adventure together! Please visit our Pet Adoptions page to see more adoptable pets.
