Transportation Information

San Clemente Soundwall Projects Move Forward

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) Board of Directors approved cooperative agreements with Caltrans, defining roles and responsibilities for preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for soundwall retrofit projects at El Camino Real and Avenida Vaquero on Interstate 5. I’m pleased to report design activities for both projects are well underway and scheduled to be completed by winter of this year.

Oso Parkway Interchange Improvement Project

The OCTA Board of Directors approved agreements and amendments for design support to agreements with Caltrans for construction of the Oso Parkway interchange improvement project at Interstate 5. The amendments to existing agreements provide additional funds required for design services during construction and will be transferred from the right-of-way phase remaining within Caltrans’ budget.

Fire Burns One Acre on Laguna Niguel Hillside

On September 30, six fire engines, two helicopters, and a hand crew under the command of Battalion Chief Jon Jones responded to a hillside vegetation fire near Alicia Parkway and Aliso Creek Road in Laguna Niguel. The Orange County Fire Authority was assisted by units from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the Orange County Parks Department. No structures were damaged or injuries reported. The fire remains under investigation.

Green areas, known as fuel modification zones are maintained between homes and dry vegetation. These zones can help slow a wildfire’s progress. Now is a good time to ensure that all dry vegetation and tree limbs are removed from your yard. For more information, please click here.

Laguna Hills Holds Adoption Ceremony for Marines

Last August, Laguna Hills became parent city to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment (3/5), 1st Marine Division. To that end, the City of Laguna Hills formally introduced its adopted Marine battalion last week to residents through an adoption ceremony at Laguna Hills High School. The formal ceremony had to wait until September as 3/5, known as The Darkhorse Battalion, deployed to Iraq shortly after the adoption.

The ceremony included a full USMC marching band, presentation of colors and troops, and speeches by Mayor L. Allan Songstad and Major Brian Heatherman. Marines were also on hand to display and discuss USMC vehicles, equipment and weapons. Similar adoption programs exist in Rancho Santa Margarita, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Newport Beach and San Juan Capistrano. To view photos of the Marine adoption ceremony, please click here.
