As such, is was my pleasure to present a proclamation in honor of the 10-year anniversary of the Veterans Resource Fair to Dr. Kathleen Burke, Chancellor of the South Orange County Communiity College District (SOCCCD), and James Buysse, President of Saddleback College, with many dignitaries and local veterans in attendance.

I also was pleased to present a certificate of recognition to Terence Nelson, who has been the VETS Program Coordinator and Veterans Resource Fair organizer at Saddleback College for the last decade.

Presenting a certificate of recognition to Saddleback College VETS Program Coordinator Terence Nelson.

Since fall of 2009, the Saddleback College VETS Program has continued to develop and offer the annual Veterans Resource Fair, linking local veterans and their families with vital resources and services, as well as supporting their well-being and potential after military service.

With local veterans at the 2018 South County Veterans Resource Fair.

As a result, thousands of veterans, active duty military personnel and military-connected local citizens have benefited from the professional and dedicated veterans service organizations participating in this popular annual event, which I am honored to be a part of.

Open House: South County Rail Improvements
Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) and Metrolink are hosting a community open house to provide an update on improvements between the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink Station and Trabuco Creek in San Juan Capistrano.

The project will add 1.8 miles of passing siding railroad track adjacent to the existing mainline track. The passing siding track will allow trains traveling in opposite directions to pass each other, reducing the amount of time trains spend waiting for opposing trains, while making passenger service safer, more reliable, and more efficient.

Please attend the community open house September 12 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at the San Juan Capistrano Library, La Sala Auditorium, 31495 El Camino Real, to learn more about this important rail project. For more info on the Laguna Niguel to San Juan Capistrano Passing Siding Project, visit the OCTA website.

September is National Preparedness Month

When a disaster strikes, the impact on the community can be devastating. It’s imperative to take steps now to prepare yourself and your family for any type of emergency. September is National Preparedness Month and the perfect time to get started. You can begin by taking the following steps:

  • Register with AlertOC and sign up for emergency alerts and notifications. Signing up only takes a few minutes.
  • Start your kit today by purchasing bottled water (one gallon per person per day). Other important supplies include non-perishable food items, first aid supplies, prescription medications, flashlights, cell phone charger, and a battery-powered radio. For a complete checklist of supplies, visit www.ReadyOC.org.
  • Decide on a family reunification location, designate an out-of-state contact, and discuss, agree on and document an emergency plan with those in your care. For sample plans, see www.ReadyOC.org. Work with your neighbors, colleagues and others to build a community network of resilience.

Make your emergency plan today and encourage those you know and love to do the same. When an emergency arises, you can implement your family emergency plan. Find out more about National Preparedness Month.
