On November 11, 1918, the Allied nations and Germany signed the armistice, formally ending the hostilities of World War I. One hundred years later, we rightfully continue to recognize this day in tribute to all veterans who have served our great nation.
Veterans will be deservedly honored Sunday throughout Orange County. Please see the "Out and About in South County" section of my newsletter below to locate a Veterans Day observance near you. Thank you to all the cities and organizations holding these patriotic celebrations!
And, of course, to all veterans everywhere, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your meritorious and courageous service to our country and in defense of the freedoms with which we are blessed. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy Veterans Day!

2018 General Election Results in Orange County
The 2018 General Midterm Election took place Tuesday, but many contested races in Orange County remain too close to call. With a reported 40 percent of votes countywide still left to be counted, it could take days or weeks before the final results are known.

U.S. Marine Corps 243rd Birthday Celebration
In honor of the 243rd Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps this week, I had the pleasure of attending the Marine Corps League - South Coast Detachment's Marine Corps Birthday Celebration in Dana Point at Cannons Seafood Grill.
During the evening's festivities, I was given the honor of conducting the ceremonial cutting of the birthday cake, the first piece of which was served to the oldest Marine present and then shared by the youngest Marine present.
I was also pleased to present certificates of recognition to Burton Brown, Commandant of the Marine Corps League-South Coast Detachment (MCL-SCD), as well as to Greg and Lisa Mortimer, Operating Partners of Cannons Seafood Grill, for their longstanding support of VFW Post 9934, the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group, and MCL-SCD.
In addition, attendees were treated to a birthday video, featuring the Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Robert B. Neller and Sgt. Maj. Ronald L. Green, speaking to Marines and Sailors about the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood, 100 years of women serving in the Marine Corps, and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Maj. John L. Canley.

Prima Deshecha Landfill Cooperative Agreement
This week, the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a new cooperative agreement with the City of San Juan Capistrano for operation of Prima Deshecha Landfill.
Prima Deshecha, like all of Orange County's landfills, is seeing less trash than originally anticipated. Initial estimates had called for Prima Deshecha to reach capacity in December of 2019; however, reductions in trash deliveries have expanded its usable lifespan to 2050.
Through collaboration with the City of San Juan Capistrano and OC Waste and Recycling, we have delivered a fair and equitable agreement that ensures we can continue to responsibly serve the needs of South County's waste disposal.

The annual awards honor the most innovative programs developed and implemented by California Counties.
One Orange County program received the highest honor, a Challenge Award, while three others received the Merit Award. These programs were selected from a field of 275 applicants.
Congratulations to our Challenge Award winner!
