2019 Point In Time Count of the Homeless

One of the fundamental aspects of ending homelessness in Orange County is determining how many people in our community need assistance. Without that data, it's very difficult to determine the resources required, potential costs involved, and to what degree we're succeeding.

Next week, Orange County will embark upon one of the most important tasks of this ongoing campaign. The biennial Point in Time count, taking place January 23-24, will determine how many people are experiencing homelessness on a given night as compared to previous counts.

This effort is critical in two respects. First of all, it happens only once every two years. As such, participation by volunteers to gain accurate data is essential. Secondly, due to new methodology, results this year will produce the most accurate count we've ever had. This will greatly help us with enacting solutions in ways not possible previously.

To that end, I urge you to join me in volunteering for the Point in Time count to support our deployment centers or serve as hands-on field surveyors. If you are unable to volunteer but would like to help, you can also donate funds to support the $5 one-day bus passes that will be distributed as a "Thank You" to the homeless individuals participating in the survey.

Regarding the the deployment sites for next week's Point-In-Time Count, please note there is one per supervisorial district; however, the cities' map distribution by deployment center does not necessarily represent all the cities in each Supervisor's District. THIS DAY on Village Television in Laguna Woods

This week, I was pleased to appear on Village Television in Laguna Woods on their talk show, THIS DAY, with host Lisa Hart and our Orange County CEO, Frank Kim.

During the program, we discussed some of the projects South County can look forward to in 2019, including finding solutions to improve conditions and care for our homeless, the El Toro Road / I-5 Interchange Improvement Project and, of course, the highly anticipated Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Project.

As 2019 Chairwoman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, I look forward to working on these and many other important projects with my Board colleagues, County CEO Frank Kim and our excellent county staff on behalf of citizens of Orange County. Report on the Conditions of Children in OC

The Orange County Children’s Partnership recently released the 24th Annual Report on the Conditions of Children in Orange County. This Report studies four interdependent focus areas:

  • Good Health
  • Economic Well-Being
  • Educational Achievement
  • Safe Homes and Communities

Each focus area includes the most recent data for indicators to assess improving or worsening trends over 10 years.

Since the future of Orange County rests in the health and well-being of our children, our annual Conditions of Children Report allows us an opportunity to assess our progress in order to ensure their future is bright. To than end, I'm pleased to report the 5th District has among the lowest obesity and child poverty rates in Orange County.

However, mental health continues to be an issue in South County, as over the last ten years, hospitalizations due to mental health issues and substance abuse among our youth have risen by 44%. For more information, please see the full Report.
