On Sunday evening, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced that two arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation of the shooting death of Aiden Leos. Today, the DA will charge the suspects.
As a mother of two boys, I’m devastated at the pain this has caused the families. I hope that these arrests bring some semblance of peace and justice to the Cloonan and Leos families, and to all those in our community who are mourning Aiden’s loss.
Again, we are so thankful to everyone who has played a role in this critical break in the case. This is a reminder of the power of a community who supports each other and works together.
ADDITIONAL COUNTY NEWS:
ON THE COUNTY BUDGET:
When I first took office, our team committed to highlighting our work at the County. We remain absolute to this principle.
The County budget was the primary topic at our June 8th board meeting, so we hosted a preview of key budgetary items with budget director Lisa Bohan-Johnston last Friday.
As always, we encourage you to let us know what you think of the meeting and our agenda discussion. Please email your public comments to response@ocgov.com, and we will do our best to get answers.
REFLECTING ON MEMORIAL DAY:
Over the Memorial Day weekend, we had the opportunity to join our community members in honoring our fallen heroes.
From Newport Beach, to Seal Beach, to Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos, it was a privilege to meet the families and loved ones of those who have served. Your loved ones served heroically, rose up to the challenge in necessary times of bravery, and your sacrifices will never be forgotten.
We will continue to honor them, and work to acknowledge their sacrifices each and every day, and not just Memorial Day.
ONGOING COMMUNITY WORK
My team and I also held a meeting with the OC United Way this week, where we discussed key community action plans. We also helped recognize retiring teachers in Garden Grove.
And to help wrap up the week, we helped celebrate Costa Mesa High School Cheer: the 2021 National Champions! This is their third time national championship!
Finally, on Friday, we recognized the Costa Mesa Mustangs! The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) 5AA semifinals took place on Friday. Cheer for them at the finals on Wednesday, June 9th at 7:00 PM!
It was also National Gun Violence Awareness Day (or “Wear Orange” day), when people wear orange to recognize victims of gun violence.
Patricia and Katherine of Moms Demand Orange County visited our office to share their concerns about the rise in deaths gun violence. You can watch the video here.
Please reach out if you have any information or news you’d like to share.

PET OF THE WEEK!
We’re back to share another Pet of the Week from the Animal Care Shelter at the County of Orange!
2-year-old Gigi was found inside a cage in the parking lot of the OC Zoo. The zookeepers quickly called OC Animal Care who reported to the scene. Unfortunately, there were no cameras in the area where Gigi was left, so our officer determined that she had been abandoned. Gigi was then taken to the shelter where she was given a full medical assessment, proper care/housing, and placed up for adoption.
Guinea pigs typically make great pets for families as they are very social animals who tend to be quite chatty. Their most well-known sound is the ‘wheek’ they make for their humans—usually to remind them to bring some food! Speaking of food, did we mention that Gigi loves to snack? Her favorite treats are fresh fruits, veggies and timothy hay.
Guinea Pigs are very intelligent and can even learn tricks when they are food motivated like Gigi! Would you like to help train Gigi to learn a new trick or two? If so, please call 714-935-6848 to schedule an adoption appointment to meet her!
