AI Summit
I attended and hosted the 2nd Annual AI K12 Deeper Learning Summit and gave welcoming remarks. Participants at the Summit explored best practices for responsible AI use and learn how to advocate for tech justice policies in their schools and communities. The Summit aims to help shape the future of AI in education and society, ensuring this powerful tool is utilized for positive impact. I was pleased to sponsor the Summit to ensure educators and students can learn about the effectiveness of AI in education but also how to use in an ethical manner. This year had 737 registered attendees, coming from 34 states, and 118 unique school districts. Thank you to Digital Promise, UCI School of Education, Anaheim Union High School District and the AI Education Project for also hosting this important event.

Senior Fraud Prevention Event Recap
I recently held a Senior Fraud Prevention Event at the Stanton Community Center. Attendees were able to hear from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, US Postal Inspection Service, Council on Aging- Southern California and the OC Clerk Recorder’s Office on common scams and fraudulent schemes that target seniors. They provided prevention tips and what to do if you believe you have been scammed. Lastly, attendees were able to get resources from our vendors at the event, providing information about services they are eligible for as seniors. Thank you to all our partners that participated! Thank you to our attendees who are taking a proactive step to support themselves from being a victim of a scam.

Groundbreaking of Lincoln Avenue Apartments
Last month, I attended the groundbreaking event for the Lincoln Avenue Apartment Complex in the City of Buena Park. The Lincoln Avenue Apartments will offer 55 affordable rental units for individuals and families earning 30%-70% of the Area Median Income, including 13 units for individuals experiencing homelessness with Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) eligibility. The County is proud to have approved and committed over $4.8 million in funding for the development of this vital project. The County has also committed 13 Housing Choice Project-Based Vouchers provided by the Orange County Housing Authority, in partnership with HUD, with a value of approximately $5.2 million. Additionally, the Health Care Agency will provide supportive services for the MHSA units. This groundbreaking is a culmination of collaborative efforts between the County, Orange County Housing Finance Trust, the City of Buena Park, C&C Development, and Riverside Charitable Corporation, among other entities to support the County’s Housing Funding Strategy goals of developing 2,396 supportive housing units by 2029. Together, we can make housing affordable.

City of Stanton Family Resource Center Playground Grand Opening
I attended the City of Stanton Family Resource Center Playground grand opening. I was pleased to help fund this project with the contribution of $425,000 from my Fourth District Discretionary Funds. The opening of this playground offers a new area for play and enrichment for any child that attends the FRC after school and childcare programs. Children deserve a space to play, have fun, and make new friends. It’s crucial to invest in projects like this that directly benefit our community’s well-being and enhance our recreational spaces. Congratulations to the City of Stanton on the opening, I hope it will serve generations of children to come.

Grand Opening of the Orchard View Gardens
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Grand Opening of the Orchard View Gardens in Buena Park. Orchard View Gardens is a new 66-unit community providing affordable and permanent supportive housing for low- to extremely low-income seniors, on land provided by St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church. Eight (8) of the units are designated specifically for seniors who have experienced homelessness. Amenities for residents include a 3,000-square-foot community room, a fitness room, computer room, private patios and balconies, outdoor lounge area, recreational area and barbecues. I want to thank National CORE, Hope through Housing Foundation, the City of Buena Park, Orange County Housing Finance Trust, St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church, and the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles for your invaluable partnership creating affordable housing for some our most vulnerable population.

EBT Card new security upgrades
New Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards featuring security upgrades will soon be on the way to residents, better protecting them from fraud while enabling them to buy nutritious, healthy food with greater confidence. The cards include embedded microchips containing encrypted data, making it significantly more difficult to steal information through skimming devices, and allow users to make contactless payments at participating retailers. Cardholders can either tap their card against a retailer’s card reader or insert the chip and enter their PIN for secure transactions. The new cards can be used by residents receiving CalFresh, CalWORKs, and other food and cash aid benefits at most grocery stores and online grocery merchants, including Walmart and Target. Distribution of the new cards begins Monday, February 24, 2025, with eligible individuals and families receiving their updated EBT cards in the mail at their home address through the coming months. Not all recipients will receive their cards at the same time. Cards will be activated upon first use, and all existing benefits will automatically transfer to the new cards. A client’s old card will be deactivated 180 days after their new card has been issued. PINs will remain unchanged. While most retailers accept the updated security features, some may still require the use of a magnetic stripe. Cardholders should first attempt to use the chip or tap features and then follow the card reader’s on-screen prompts if necessary. For questions, card usage issues or to report lost or stolen cards, cardholders are encouraged to contact the EBT Customer Service Helpline at (877) 328-9677. Benefits can be managed at ebtedge.com.
