Volunteers Needed to Help Count Individuals Experiencing Homelessness in Orange County

The County of Orange is seeking around 1,000 volunteers to sign up to help with the 2019 Point In Time count, taking place Wednesday, January 23, and Thursday, January 24.

The Point In Time is a biennial effort required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, counting people experiencing homelessness in a given point in time during the last 10 days in January. The data resulting from the 2019 Point In Time count will provide information to help the County and its partners better understand and address homelessness.

Volunteers are primarily needed to serve as field surveyors, who will canvass predesignated areas across Orange County and conduct surveys of homeless individuals. Volunteers are also needed to serve as team captains, host leads, host team members, photographers and videographers, and A/V and tech support. Volunteer opportunities are available in morning shifts and evening shifts on both January 23 and 24. Volunteers are projected to mostly complete the count on January 23, with volunteers following up on January 24 to cover any areas that might have been missed. (See descriptions of volunteer opportunities and links to register here.)

In-person training for volunteers will be offered on Saturday, January 12; Wednesday, January 16; and Thursday, January 17 in Fullerton, Tustin and Mission Viejo. The two-hour, in-person training is required for all team captain volunteers and is optional for all other volunteers. (See a full list of training options and an RSVP form here.)

Each team of field surveyors will be led by a team captain, who will have specific training and most likely experience in outreach or providing services to homeless individuals. Volunteers will receive information leading up to the Point In Time count covering details such as what to wear, how to conduct the app-based survey, and how to ensure safety.

Clerk-Recorder to Offer Extended Valentine’s Day Hours for Marriage Services

For those looking to tie the knot on what many consider to be the most romantic day of the year, look no further. To accommodate couples, Orange County Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen will be offering extended hours at his offices in Anaheim, Laguna Hills and at the Old County Courthouse in Santa Ana on Valentine’s Day. The department will close at 5:30 p.m. instead of its normal closing hours to issue marriage licenses and perform marriage ceremonies.

Valentine’s Day continues to be one of the busiest days of the year for the department and this year will be no exception, appointments will go fast. Couples are encouraged to make an appointment for a civil marriage ceremony due to the expected high demand on this special day. Appointments are only available at the department’s Laguna Hills and Santa Ana locations.

Couples can make an appointment by visiting our website at OCRecorder.com and using the online appointment system. The department’s North County Branch Office is currently in the process of moving from Fullerton to its new location in Anaheim and will only be serving customers on a walk-in basis. Walk-ins are welcomed at all locations; couples will be accommodated based on availability of ceremony rooms.

“Valentine’s Day is always one of the busiest and happiest days of the year for the department, so we try to make it easier for couples,” said Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen. “By extending marriage service hours, more couples will have an opportunity to marry on what many consider to be the most romantic day of the year. I would also like to thank my staff for all their hard work and for making this possible for our customers,” he added.

The department would like to remind couples that Orange County has one of the lowest costs for a marriage license and marriage ceremony in the State. Couples can obtain a public marriage license for $61 and a confidential marriage license for $66. A civil marriage ceremony can be performed for an additional $28.

The all-time Valentine’s Day record for the department was set in 2014, when the department issued 310 marriage licenses and performed 266 ceremonies.

A couple of reminders: the department’s Westminster location will only issue marriage licenses and will be closing at 4:30 p.m. The department’s North County Branch Office is transitioning to its new Anaheim location and will only serve customers on a first-come-first-served basis. To save time, marriage license applications can be completed online at OCRecorder.com prior to visiting our offices. For more detailed information, call our information line at (714) 834-2500.

Helena Modjeska Historic House Featured in the Orange County Register

The Helena Modjeska Historic House.

OC Parks recently hosted an open house on January 5 for the century-old Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens and the event was profiled in the Orange County Register.

The Modjeska House was home to renowned 19th Century actress Madame Helena Modjeska and is one of only two National Historic Landmarks in Orange County. Modjeska lived in the house from 1888 to 1905. She acted primarily in Shakespearean plays in her native Poland, continuing her career in the United States when she immigrated in 1876.

Her home, located in what is now Modjeska Canyon, was a ranch when she purchased it and renovated the grounds to resemble the Forest of Arden in the Shakespearean play, “As You Like It.” Artists of the day would often visit.

Docent-guided tours of the house and gardens are offered to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., by reservation. Self-guided grounds tours are available Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call (949) 923-2230 or visit http://www.ocparks.com/historic/Modjeska.
