Supervisor Todd Spitzer was invited to join the cast of the Orange County’s Gift of History. The event brought third grade students from throughout Orange County to Angels Stadium to learn about Orange County’s rich history by watching an interactive production based on the book, Nothing Rhymes with Orange that was written by Stan Oftelie.

“Where you are from shapes how you live,” Supervisor Spitzer said. “As a former teacher, I understand how history sets the path for the future. I hope that the students learn about the history of Orange County and feel invested in ensuring its bright future.”

Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined emergency services and public agencies in hosting the Post Silverado Fire-Debris Flow Plan Community Meeting this week to provide information and address resident questions about debris flow preparedness following the Silverado Fire in September. The Silverado Fire burned over 960 acres.

The County of Orange, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Fire Authority, OC Animal Care and the American Red Cross each reported on recommended steps for residents to be prepared for a future event. In addition to answering questions, the information provided included an update on County preparations for debris flow in areas damaged by the fire, an overview of the community notification process that includes the use of AlertOC, and the evacuation process residents can take to prepare for future rain events.

“The biggest message tonight is to please connect with your neighbors, be prepared in case you have to evacuate and register with AlertOC,” Supervisor Spitzer said. “It’s important to do what we can to be prepared.”

OC Public Works will host an Erosion Control Workshop on Saturday November 15 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the intersection of Black Star Canyon Rd. and Silverado Canyon Rd. The workshop will offer a hands-on demonstration by County personnel on proper installation of sandbags and rice bales. Click here for more information.

Supervisor Spitzer Joins Junior League’s Christmas Company Grand Opening

Christmas Company Chair Raquel Edwards, Junior League President Becky Mandich, Supervisor and Vice Chairman of the Orange County Transportation Authority Safety Committee Todd Spitzer and Public Affairs Director Katherine Ahlswede – Displaying information campaign, Be the One to Help Out (BT1)

Supervisor Todd Spitzer joined the Junior League of Orange County who launched their annual Christmas Company at the Costa Mesa Hilton. The Junior League of Orange County, California (JLOCC) is a women’s volunteer organization committed to improving the lives of the underserved in the Orange County community through effective action and leadership. JLOCC has been a wonderful asset to the Orange County community over the last 59 years and promotes a vision of health, safety, and education. This group has made contributions to the arts, family support, and mentorship for health issues such as mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, and polio vaccinations.

Currently, the JLOCC has been focusing their efforts on human trafficking awareness. Since foster children are particularly at risk for being victims of human trafficking, JLOCC has expanded existing community-based education and communication programs about human trafficking in OC and how to identify potential victims.

Supervisor Spitzer talked about his active effort to prevent human trafficking and commended the JLOCC for their focus on the issue. “This is an important issue and it’s intolerable. Human trafficking is enslavement and a threat to the fiber of our society, freedom. I want to do what I can to put a stop to this and I know that residents feel the same way,” Supervisor Spitzer said.

Social scientists estimate that globally, as many as 27 million men, women, and children are victims of human trafficking at any one time, but only 40,000 victims were identified last year. This is a crime that occurs in the shadows, out of the view and reach of law enforcement. Human traffickers prey on the poor, the homeless, ethnic minorities and indigenous groups, migrant workers, undocumented immigrants, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized populations reluctant to seek assistance from the government or other organizations.

Last year in Orange County, 28 women and eight men were victims of labor trafficking, while 177 females, one male and one transgender adult were victims of sex trafficking, according to the 2014 Human Trafficking Victim Report released by the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force.

JLOCC currently has over 700 members in Orange County who have volunteered over 20,000 hours to the Orange County community over the course of one year. Junior Leagues throughout California proudly are made up of over 10,000 women, and worldwide, there are 150,000 Junior League members. For more information about JLOCC, click here.

County of Orange officials, Bob Hope USO leadership and members of the military celebrate Veterans Day with the opening of the Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport (JWA). Now, more than 50,000 military members and their families each year can now receive the hallmark USO airport welcome at the first Orange County USO since World War II.

For 73 years, USO centers have welcomed troops and their families at airports across the nation. That warm welcome is being extended for the very first time at Orange County's John Wayne Airport. The USO Center features a stocked canteen, movies, travel assistance and free Wi-Fi for members of the military and their guests. The Airport is leasing the space to Bob Hope USO under a five-year agreement for $1 per year.

Construction of the Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport was made possible by sponsors who provided project support, pro-bono services and supplies. Snyder Langston led the effort and provided in-kind design-build services with project management by Butier Engineering, Inc. Many others contributed to the construction, furnishings and planning of the USO Center, which included.

The Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport is open 365 days per year from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Active and reserve members and their dependent family members are welcome, as well as military retirees on a space available basis.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, sponsorships or donations to the new Bob Hope USO, go to bobhopeuso.org.
