“I had the honor and the privilege to present the Orange County Veteran Advisory Council with a resolution to honor our Veterans on Memorial Day. The Board of Supervisors designated 11 am as a time to unite in prayer, 3 pm as the “Moment of Remembrance” and we directed that all flags at County buildings be flown at half-staff on Memorial Day until noon,” said Supervisor Todd Spitzer. “On Memorial Day, I hope that people will make the time to visit a place of tribute and inspiration where they can reflect on the significant sacrifices that brave men and women have made to defend our freedom.”

Activation of the Operational Area Emergency Operations Center takes a team of dedicated individuals from the Sheriff’s Department, County agencies and other Operational Area partners. In order to help ensure that local law enforcement and county departments are prepared to respond to an event, Orange County participated in the Surf Quake 2015 Operational Area Exercise.

Surf Quake 2015 is a functional four hour exercise that is held at multiple sites, including the Operational Area Emergency Operations Center and the Emergency Operations Centers, for participating cities and special districts. It is the first large scale exercise of the year.

“I can’t say enough how important it is to be organized and to have a clear plan in place so residents and emergency responders can be prepared to face whatever threat comes our way,” said Chairman Todd Spitzer. “I want you to know that I am here to help and to do whatever I can to make sure that the right resources are allocated toward keeping the Canyons and Orange County safe.”

Emergency exercises reinforce Orange County’s commitment to excellence in Emergency Management and disaster response.

Key considerations for response and recovery include:
  • Decision making: coordinate among affected jurisdictions to develop protective actions for the general public.
  • Evacuations: safely move the public using traffic control points and transportation assembly points including people with disabilities and access and functional needs.
  • Public Information: coordinate public information with affected jurisdictions and within the EOC.
  • Hotline: Activate the Public Information Hotline and provide accurate information and instructions to the public including people with disabilities and access and functional needs.
  • Shelters: establish accessible shelters for displaced members of the public, including requests for support for people with disabilities and access and functional needs.
Orange County will continue to ensure the safety of responders and community members by embracing all aspects of a fully developed emergency management system, including the training and exercises for our responders that will continue to enhance our response capability.

John Wayne Airport expects Airport traffic to be heaviest on Thursday and Friday (May 21 - 22) and Tuesday (May 26). In 2014, over 150,000 passengers traveled through JWA between the Thursday before and the Tuesday after Memorial Day.

"As we look ahead to one of the busiest travel periods of the year, it's important we recognize that Memorial Day provides us an opportunity to be with friends and family, but more importantly, it is a time to remember and honor those who have served our country," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Spitzer. "We encourage those traveling through JWA to plan ahead, and invite active duty service members to visit the Bob Hope USO for a warm and welcoming stop at the Airport."

Travel Tips for Passengers and Visitors:

  • Passengers are allowed one small carry-on bag plus one personal item as long as the carry-on bag fits airline dimensions. Check with individual airlines for specifics.

Parking at JWA:
  • Curbside Valet Parking for $30 per day, located on the Departure (upper) Level between Terminals A and B, or in front of Terminal C.
