Preparing to Survive Workplace Violence
Have you ever thought about what you would do if you were suddenly and unexpectedly attacked? Would you freeze, run, collapse, or fight back? Is there something you carry with you that could be used as a defensive weapon if your survival depended on it? Do you have an exit plan for when your office building starts shaking or when the floor starts getting hot and you smell smoke?

In the past two years, since initiation of Proposition 47 resentencing and releases, with the uptick in our County’s crime rate and the increased transient population in Santa Ana’s Civic Center, we all need to be concerned about employee and school safety, under circumstances where we once had the luxury of being more complacent. As a person concerned with safety, we can no longer be complacent.

All County Departments are now required to have routine emergency evacuation drills, procedures in place, safe gathering places to muster and specific personnel assigned roles to facilitate safety procedures in the event of an actual emergency. Do we take these drills, these practice sessions, as seriously as we should?

When we drive our cars, we are more alert at intersections, on and off ramps and the entryways to the carpool lane. We are because we have been trained, or have learned through experience, that these are places where bad things could happen. We are more alert, watching for possible dangers, and ready to take evasive actions and to slow down or speed up to avoid an accident. Are we as aware of our surroundings at work on our lunch breaks and when we walk to and from our cars or public transportation before and after work?

Every year, the County of Orange provides Civic Center Awareness & Personal Safety Training, available for all County employees. This is a model that people should replicate in their schools, workplaces and even at home.

Fifteen years ago, there was a difference between the three planes that hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the one that hit a Pennsylvania field. Passengers on the last flight assessed the situation, formulated a plan, and took action. When we are confronted with a threatening situation, may we be prepared to be able to say “Let’s roll.”

Supervisor Spitzer introduces Saved by the 90s at the OC Parks Summer Concert at Mason Park in Irvine

Supervisor Todd Spitzer welcomed the crowd and introduced headline band Saved by the 90s at the OC Parks Summer Concert at Mason Park in Irvine. The band Gardeners Logic performed as the opening act. In addition to the County’s summer concert, Supervisor Spitzer and staff also attended the summer concerts organized by the Cities of Orange, Yorba Linda and Tustin to set up informational booths for constituents to learn more about County government.

Concert attendance at the County’s concerts at Mason Park have continued to increase now that the OC Summer Concert Series allows consumption of alcoholic beverages. In July 2015, Supervisor Todd Spitzer garnered Board approval of a resolution that allowed the County to use the 2015 OC Parks Summer Concert Series as a pilot program to test the new County Event Alcohol Ordinance. To date, no incidents related to alcohol have been reported at the events. Free concerts in the park are an annual tradition in Orange County that run on Thursday nights July through August, and the public is encouraged to attend.

You are invited to future concerts in the park.

National Association of Counties features Orange County Ethics Commission Measure

At a time when American politics are polarized and contentious, Supervisor Todd Spitzer worked with County watchdog Shirley Grindle and Supervisor Shawn Nelson to develop Measure A to form the first County-based Ethics Commission in California. County News, a publication by the National Association of Counties, featured the Orange County Ethics Commission in News Across the Nation as a highlight from California.

Measure A reflects the Founding Fathers’ vision of cooperative politics. People of vastly different political beliefs came together and worked together to develop a measure to reform our government. Measure A shows what people can do when they put aside their differences and are willing to compromise to build something that everyone can support.

The voters of Orange County approved Measure A by a margin of 70% to 30% on the June ballot. The results of the Measure A election show the people of Orange County have overwhelmingly seen the need for an Ethics Commission in Orange County. The passage of Measure A opens a new era in Orange County. Supervisor Todd Spitzer helped lead the effort to develop an independent agency who will actually hold politicians, lobbyists, and other public officials accountable.

The Commission will be more difficult to manipulate for political gain because there is a confidential hearing before an independent administrative hearing officer. Only if the accused party appeals from the hearing officer will it go to a public hearing of the Commission. Additionally, any person who knowingly submits a false claim is subject to a $1,000 fine.

Lt. Jarrett Kurimay, the Orange County Sheriff’s Chief of Yorba Linda Police Services

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the City of Yorba Linda are pleased to announce Lieutenant Jarrett Kurimay as the new Chief of Yorba Linda Police Services.

Lieutenant Kurimay is a 21-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and has served in a variety of roles. He spent 10 years as a patrol deputy in both unincorporated North Orange County and the City of Mission Viejo, serving six years as a K9 handler and then supervising the K9 unit. As a Lieutenant, Kurimay was most recently assigned as the Department Commander overseeing patrol operations.

“I am looking forward to serving the residents of Yorba Linda,” said Lieutenant Kurimay. “I have a strong belief in the importance of community. Education and interaction with the residents on a day-to-day basis will be my highest priorities.”
